I could not attempt to take the space
necessary in these columns to relate all
of my experiences, as I spent all day en
deavoring to buy a second-hand car where
I could see and not nave a salesman e
plain its condition to me. I secured somi
of rhi tne-a hiimr on the "Derfect condi

relative to cars' condition, and you can

and buy or go to some oiner esinumu

East Pike st. His ad states over two
hundred cars to select from. (I couldn't
see a hundred "automobiles." Here is
the way his ad reads: "No matter what
car you pick from the big list on my
floor (he does not say STOCK of CARS)
you may be sure of getting a genuine
bargain. They. will stand up under the
most searching inspection (I saw some
standing on blocks) and prove consld'

Salesman waited on me and I finally be
came In love from his explanations wnn
a Velio. Conversation ran this way:
Condition? Excellent. Year? 1911. It
was a 1910. Make of motor? Velie. Was
a British-American. Made where? De
troit. Made in Moline, Illinois. Ignition
system? Was not quite sure, but thought
it waa a Splitdott. was an Atwaier ivent.
-RnM i.f pvllnH,r? FlMn't know. Semi.

Did not know for sure, but the Velle

not. Made of transmission and where

said It was In the center. Price, $550. I
suggested meekly that the car looked
pretty well worn for that amount, when
he assured me that it was the best BUY
In the HOUSE and called my attention
to the wind-shield, beautiful lines of the
body, the flno headlights and that it cost
new "$2S0a" They never bum a car com-inn-

r'rt.ilH T nnx-A n. rtdA? Sure with oleasure.
Things were becoming hot now, as I had
begun to fall for all of this without rais

They worked for 20 minutes to get it
started and during this period of agony
and arguments between Mr. Salesman and
the floor man as to how to start the
Ihlnir Vr "Salesman remarked that he had
never had the least trouble in starting It
previously, as he had started it a THOU
SAND times, before; but I guess from the
quicic gasp I gave he corrected himself
by saying a FEW TIMES. It would not
start, ko the salesman, the floor man and
myself acted as a self-starter. Pike street
is very steep in front of this place, so
we pushed the Perfect Car to the edg
of the curb and the floor man took his
position behind the wheel, knowing that
great responsibility rested upon his nar
row shoulders. We were given a rousing
send-off down the hill and finally, after
nearly rasping out what was left of the
gears, we got a single cougn irora u.-sc
CYLINDER. We did fine going down
Pike street, but I did not want to walk
back, so suggested we turn back wiile

The demonstrator knew of a round-a-bout
way back to the salesroom where the per

and an open car, the HEAT made the
passengers very comfortable. This is about

then the trices began to drop. From $550
It nt trt fnnr hundred without a Pause,
than I was made a flat offer to take it
then and there for $.150, so I made an
offer of $300, and Inasmuch as the owner

at three hundred, but If I could put up

Sunday. I noticed In The Oregonlan while
I was reading it in Seattle that one sec
ond-hand establishment says that the rea
son why ours are bargains has been proven
by our sales the last two weeks. I know
of three cars that this concern has been
flrivftrtislne- for many weeks in tne pasi
(refer to back issues In papers), and one
they have had for nearly two years, that
t sold before it ever came Into their
hands, and when it was first advertised
for sale It was 1900. I was told it was
sold lust a few days ago for $575 on time,
and the buyer brought it iover to my
place to see if I could sell It for him again
before his next payment became due, and
in addition to the car ne naa juoi re

pany that the seller had put Insurance

him which he said ne would not pay.
onH that if I could not sell the car and
get him something for his equity, that he
intended to turn the car back to them
and forfeit hlB first payment, which was
close to being half the price. I would
not have the outfit for what he paid as
hi, rt navment. because when I sola
it previously to the late owners It was
second-hand. '
