Churchman and Frank Smaller. In a
raid tonight, were arrested on a charge
of blind-plRSinw. The raid was made
tr Constable Frost and Deputy Con
stable William Griffith. Empty whisky
flasks nearly filled the house, while
15 unopened bottles now are held as
evidence The men say that the whisky
wan for their own use.
Each was placed under 1250 bonds.

known. Krone ran a saloon until the
town was voted dry a year ago.
Churrhman Is a trusted employe of
the Hawlev Pulp & Paper Company,
where he has worked for the last four
vears. Mike Long, in the alleged blind
pig. today bought a bottle of whisky.
Long's name was used in the complaint.
Churchman and Bmalley waived prelim
inary hearings. Krone will be taken
before Justice Sievers on Tuesday.
MASONS INVADE ALBANY

rnder the leadership of Worshipful
Jlaster H. H. Young, nearly 200 mem
bers of Washington Lodge No. 46. of
Portland, invaded Albany at S:30
o'clock this evening on a special train
on the Oregon Electric line. The ob
ject of the call was to return the visit
made a few weeks ago by fst. John's
Lodge No. 17. A. F. and A. M.. of this
city. The officers of the visiting lodge
tonight exemplified the ritualistic work
in the Master Mason degree.
The Portland Masons were met at the
depot by members of the Albany Lodge
and. led by the Shrine band of Port
land, marched two abreast to the Ma
sonic Temple. Before the ritualistic
work a banquet was served, presided
over by Worshipful Master Dan John
ston, of Albany. President H. M.
Crooks, of Albany College, delivered the
address of welcome.
F. H. Frundage. of Albany, took the
third degree. More than 400 Masons
in all were. present. This afternoon a
conference of Shrincrs was held in Al
hanv. presided over by Illustrious Po
tentate Frank Stapleton. of Portland.
Sixtv-five Masons in Albany have en
tered the Shrine. There are nearly 10
Shriners In Albany and the country
immediately surrounding.
TAX LAW NOT IN, IS STAND
Lane Treasurer Says He Will Col
leet Instead of Sherirf.

Holding that the emergency clause on
the bill transferrins the collection of
taxes from the Treasurer to the Sheriff
is- not effective S. W. Taylor. iJtne
County Treasurer, today announced that
he would start the collection of taxes
in Lane County next Tuesday. He
bases his action on an opinion from
the Attorney-General that no emersr-em-y
existed, and that th law will
not be effective for 90 days.
The taxes will be colletced under
the 1S13 law. requiring that the entire
tax must be paid by April 1. The In
junction granted by the Circuit Court
last year, allowing the payment of the
.-ecoiid half of the taxes without
penalty before September 1. has ex

The first jitney bus to be operated in
Albany started today, under the man
agement of Clark Price, of this city."
Although the city charter provides a
license fee for vehicles of this class, no
burden of the kind is being placed on
Mr. Price today, for by special arrange
ment he is conducting today's busi
ness as an experiment. If it proves a
paying venture the jitney will be an
established factor in Albany's passen
ger traffic.
