THE SUNDAY OREGOXTAN. PORTLAND. JANUARY 24, 1915.
TWO RECENT ARRIVALS WHICH ARE CAUSING CONSIDERABLE COMMENT AT THE AUTO SHOW.
OPTIMISM IS FOUND
.. ,
Northern Washington Is Pros

TRAIN OF BUICKS VIEWED

Attracted In large Numbers by

biles Being Shipped.
Sot only optimism, bnt real pros
perity is apparent in the northern half
of the State of Washington," said Mel
G. Johnson, manager of the Howard
.Automobile Co. of this city. Pacific
Coast distributors for the Buick line
of automobiles, who returned this
week after have accompanied the spe
cial train of 40 carloads of Buick cars
from, Spokane to Seattle and to Portland.!
"Tos train was on exhibition at the
TMuuiniiirer station of the Great North
ern Railway in Spokane for a whole
day. The westward journey was made
on a daylight schedule.
"The first town of consequence
reached after leaving Spokane was
Harrington. Fully one-third the total
population of this prosperous town was
on band to greet the Buick special.
About Harrington, 1.000,000 bushels of
wheat were produced during: the past
. season, of which 25 per cent is still
In the hands of the farmers.
67,000 Bushels Lately Sold.
"One farmer, a Sir. Turner, now
holds no less than mo.OOO bushels, the
most i recent sale of any proportion
made there being that of Mr. Greene,
who disposed of his crop of 67,000
bushels at J1.14 per bushel," said Mr.
Johnson.
"The next town of importance is
Odessa, which enjoys the . reputation
of being: the largest grain shipping
noint on the Great Northern Railway,
the total output being 1.600,090 bushels
annually.
"The special stopped over night at
Wilson Creek, where the farmers are
not only raising bounteous crops of
rratn. but are following diversified
farming and have recently engaged In
hograising and dairying.
At Wenatchee, where it Is said that
SO per cent of the extra fancy apples
marketed from the Nortnwest are pro
duced, one-half of the 1914 crop of 700
carloads has been disposed of. the re
maining half being in storage at Wen
atchee. Apple GroTrers Optimistic.
"The aoole crowers 'Of Wenatchee
am optimistic over the prospects of
the solution of the question of market
ing the apple crop of the Northwest,
which it is believed will be solved at
the convention to be held in Seattle
next week.
"At Everett and other cities along
the Coast, many of the lumber and
shingle mills are resuming operations
and generally conditions are undoubt
edly improved.
"From the high official position of
Western Industrial and Immigration
Agent to the menial position of cook
on a private car is a long step, but
only shows the versatility of K W.
Graham. Western Industrial and Immi
gration Agent of the Great Northern
Railway at Seattle, and well known In
Portland.
"Among the party accompanying the
Buick special train In a special car
over the Great Northern from Spokane
to Seattle, were A. S. Eldndge, mana
ger of the Northwest Buick Co.; M.
G. Costello, assistant traffic manager:
Mr. Graham and R. K. Pretty, general
freight agent of the Great Northern
Railway, and myself, of course.
Ctrl Caoses Loss of Cook.
"Upon the arrival of the train at
Everett. Charley, the Japanese cook.
alighted from the car In order that he
might telephone his best girl or his
return to headquarters. The Buick
special pulled out with Charley busy
at the telephone.
"As breakfast had been partially
prepared. Charley was soon missed and
orders were given to back up and
pick up the cook.
"In the meantime Graham had aS'
mimed the responsibility of cooking the
hot cake.- and met with great success.
"As Charley re-entered the car he
addressed Mr. Costello with a sweep
ing kow tow and said: 'Excuse me,
please.'
Hara Is Self Starter.
"Another enjoyable Incident of the
jdnrney was the unexplainable phe
nomena which developed while the
train' was standing in the yard of
Leavenworth. Without apparent warn
ing, a horn on one of the cars in one
of the carloads, began an incessant
sound. After it had continued, fully
one-half hour. It was decided to break
the seal on the carload and ascertain
the cause of the unusual sound.
"All efforts to find a reason for the
unusual noise were to no avail, but
by disconnecting the wire leading to
the horn, the noise was effectually
stopped."

"It Is certainly surprising," Bald
Frank C. Riggs, president of the Frank
C. Riggs Company, distributors of
Packard, Jeffery and Detroit electric
cars, "to see how the public buys motor
cars without giving the stability of the
manufacturer the serious considera
tion which the problem deserves. If
it were a matter of buying almost any
thing else than a motor car, I am sure
that this feature would receive a great
deal more consideration. - It is a sub
ject that the public is vitally Interested
in lust at this time, as the weaker
manufacturerers are fast being elinx
inated and it is becoming a question
of the survival of the fittest.
"Statistics compiled during the &nto.
mobile show in New York have brought
this strongly before the public. Dur
ing the past two years the number of
makers of cars has dropped from IBB
to 119 and among those dropped are
many names familiar to Portland
motorists, as they are the names of
manufactnrers of cars which have met
with a ready sale in this territory.
The dealers are usually out of bust
nes shortly after the manufacturer's
failure with the result that the owner
of the car is without a home and with
out anyone to look to for service or
supplies.
The announcement of the suspension
of any manufacturer immediately re
duces the selling value of- a car of
that make of whatever vintage it may
be. to about 50 per cent of what it
would otherwise be. The. latest an
nouncement of the suspension of manu
facturing will come as a surprise to
prominent Portland persons who have
recently purchased this make, that of
the Stevens-Duryea. It was announced
that the company will indefinitely post
pone the further manufacture of cars,
the action throwing out of employment
practically the entire force of 2500 men.
Other firms that have been more or
less prominent before the Portland pub
lie and which have gone out of bus.
iness or failed are the manufacturers
of the Knox. Michigan, Thomas, Pal
mer Singer and Pope Hartford. "
Judge E. B. Jaeger authorized Colonel
George Pope, receiver cf the Pope Man
ufacturing Company, to accept the of.
fer of Pratt & Whitney for the main
works of the Pope company in Hart
ford.
Such trade changes as these should
be seriously considered by prospective
buyers. There are plenty of good cars
of all qualities, from the Ford to the
Packard, to be had in the market that
are made by responsible manufacturers
and sold by well-established dealers
and under these circumstances It seems
strange that our wiseacres will still
attempt to leat the game and buy
what they believe is a bargain, only
to wake up the next day to And It Is
worth 60 per cent of what they paid

SEW DEVICE FOR FORDS.
System Consists of TJnlt, Coupled to

From Left-Hand Side.
E. O. Johnson, manager of the Port'
land branch of Hughson & Merton, re
ceived a telegram yesterday announc
ing the fact that his company had been
made the Faclnc Coast factory repre
sentatives of the Gray & Davis start
ing system lor ora cars.
This device was announced last year
but- was not pushed much bv the
makers because they believed that they
could improve it and make it a perfect
system. As they have established
agencies and are now marketing the
device, it can be assumed that the
system may be classed as perfect
It consists of a unit placed on the
left-hand side of the motor and coupl
ing with the Ford motor through a
simple gear and chain.
It is one of the most dependable
features yet announed by makers of
Ford additions. It has ample power to
turn the motor at high speed and all
starting troubles are eliminated by the
device which has been made strong.
The Benjamin Boone Company, the
Ford retailers of Portland, received one
of the outfits the first of the year
and after Installing It on a car gave
it the severest tryout It was found
absolutely dependable and economical
from the standpoint of battery wear.
"This device is one thing needed to
put the Ford absolutely on a par with
any of the modern electrically equipped
cars, - says B. O. Johnson.

turers of having direct factory rep

Float Canses Gas Waste.
Quite often there will be an un
noticed drip of gasoline for a few min
utes from the carburetor after the en
gine has stopped. This Is not only a
waste of fuel, but It is dangerous from
the risk of fire. Usually this condition
is due to the float not closing the j
needle valve opening promptly.
