BY P. F. LOWDEH.
CHICAGO. Jan. . (Special.. Wal-
I ter T. Sumner, dean of tbe Cathe-
dral Saints Peter and Paul. 'of Chi
cago), who was consecrated Episcopal
bishop of Oregon last Wednesday, will
leave Chicago Tor his new field on Jan
uary 1.
Portland will know that he is in
town within a short time after the
train arrives. Bishop Sumner is a man
who does things. Ills record in Chicago
shows that. Ho accepted the new call
because ho felt there was a great op
portunity in it. Just about as soon as
he has had time to look over the field
he will begin to take advantage of his
new opportunities.
Naturally he has (riven no indication
of any specific thing that he intends
or expects to accomplish. Ho has, now
ever, said that he will try to use his
Influence for good in the community
and will work for civic betterment both
for the good of the church with which
he Is affiliated and for the good of the
city of which he will be a resijnt.
That means he will do something.
Bishop Sumner never talks unless he
Tias a purpose. When he has a purpose
he Is like a bulldog. He never lets go
until the thing is accomplished.
Record Provea Actlvty.
The wonderful record which he made
while in charge of the Cathedral at
Chicago la convincing proof that he is
a man of action, and convictions. The
bishop is small, physically, but has
been declared to be one of Chicago's
biggest men. Here are some of the
things. In tabloid form, which he has
done:
Waged relrnttesa war on commercialised
Tire In Chicago.
Helped raue the salaries of Chicago school
teacher.
Conducted campaign against Immoral
drea.
introduced the teaching of sex hygiene
In Chicago public erhools.
Worked intlotatigably for hygienic mar
riages, curved in the Illinois National Guard as
captain. 1
In addition, he is or has been:
Member of the Chicago Board of Educa
tion. Chairman of the advisory . board of the
United Charities.
Vice-president of the Juvenile Protective
League.
Director and treasurer of toe Charles
Sumner Social Settlement.
Trustee for the Home for Aped Persona
Chairman of the Tribune lodging-house
committee.
Member of the committee on unemployed
created by Mayor Harrison.
Vice-president of tho Juvenile Court com
mittee. Member of the university. Social Service,
Forty. Illinois and City Clubs and many
other institutions and organizations.
Bishop Kmsi as Mixer.
-Bishop Sumner Is -known as a man
with perfect sympathy and understand
ing. He is a perfect "mixer." Courag
eous as any man can be, he stands
ready at all times to battle for his
convictions. Once started on any track,
he holds to the fight until it is won.
His campaign for hygienic marriages
is known the country over. He de
clared his policy at the Cathedral of
Saints Peter and Paul to he one wnicn
wnuiri not nermit the issuance of wed-
dlnfl- certificates without a certificate
from a reputable physician as to the
mental and physical soundness of the
contracting parties. The battle was
taken up all over the country and in
estimable good has come of it.
The vigorous and capahle young
clergyman took up the defense of a
West Side police official when that of
ficial was accused of graft in his dis
trict. Dean Sumner, on the witness
stand toJd of the police officer's fight
for the fallen women 01 nis amri"
and of the great good he had done for
the down-and-outs while in charge of
his station. ,
Walter Taylor Sumner was born m
1873 in Manchester. n-, anu
graduated from Dartmouth College and
the Western Theological Seminary. In
.- fc,- K.amA secretary to Bishop
Charles P. Anderson, of Chicago, and
the following year was
nri0t In charge of St
George's Church.
