TOTE SUNDAY OREGOXTAX, PORTXAITO, JANUARY 10, 1915. $5Q0,000SENTHERE FOR BELGIANS' AID Money Comes From American Commission in London, and T. B. Wilcox Is Trustee. THIRD SHIP WOW EXPECTED Ua.-lilnploii at Paget Sound and Cranlejr Due in Portland Satur day to Have Cargoes Com pleted 'Without Delay. Purchases of Northwest foodstuffs yesterday by Theodore B. Wilcox to complete the cargo of the relief steamer "Washington. which reached Puget Found to load for Belgium, revealed a fund of f 300,000 which baa been sent to lr. Wilcox by the American Commis sion for Belgian Relief, to be expended as he sees 111. Yesterday's purchases were the first dip into this fund. When the Washing ton Is fnllv loaded and dispatched the steamer Cranley will come to Portland for Oregon's contributions - lor tne starving Belgians and the vacant cargo space remaining in the vessel will be tilled from the same luna ny Jir. i cox. It is understood a third steamer will come to the Northwest for food stuffs later to be used for the same purpose. It was thought at first that one steamer, the Washfngton. would carry the contributions of both Oregon and Washington, but when the need for Belgium was found to be much greater than originally believed, anotner ves sel, the Cranley. was chartered by the American Commission and ordered to l'ortland to londL The American Com mission, which has headquarters In London, sent Mr. Wilcox the fund of J500.0-0 privately and told him to load the shlDs. directing that he use his own Judgment as to how "the fund should be spent. Mr. Wlleo on Commission. Mr. Wilcox Is a member of the Ameri can Commission. The headquarters In this country are at "I Broadway. Lon don W. Bates being vice-chairman. Other prominent members'are ex-Gov ernor Stubb. of Kansas; W. H. Crocker, fan Francisco; W. C. Edgar. Minne apolis: General Arsene Perrilllat. New Orleans, and others. The Washington reached Port Town send yesterday from MoJI. Japan, and will arrive at Tacoma this morning, where she will find her cargo waiting for loading. Mr. Wilcox will go to Tacoma early this week on behalf of the relief work. The steamer -will start to load Wednesday. The Cranley Is due at Portland Satur day and her cargo will be collected at the Municipal Dock ready for her to load. After taking on Oregon contri butions, supplemented by purchases of foodstuffs by Mr. Wilcox, she will go to San Francisco, where canned vege tables and fruit, bought also by Mr. Wilcox from the fund at his disposal, will complete the cargo. "I have made purchases of foodstuffs for the American Commission." said Mr. Wilcox last night when advices reached the city from Tacoma that the cargo of the Washington had been completed. "These purchases will sup plement the donations of supplies by people of the State of Washington and f merchandise of various kinds pur chased by the people of Seattle and Tacoma. Money Comes From London. "Yesterday's purchases were of canned salmon, rolled oats, graham and white flour and other commodities, all foodstuffs, and were bought from a fund entrusted to me by the American Commission. The money was sent from London. Similar purchases will be made to fill out the cargo of the Cran ley, Oregon's relief ship, when she reaches Portland January 18. "The Commission is exceedingly grate ful for the contributions that have come in. I have had letters that have brought tears to my epres. and they have not sent along any money, either, and In some cases I feel that people have given more than they should. It lias been an experience with people that I have never known equaled. "We feel that, considering the times. the people have been exceedingly 11b- eral. and the Commission Is deeply ap- preclative of the splendid spirit that has been shown. Oregon and Wash ington people and several communities In Idaho and Utah have been most (ten crous In helplni; load these relief ships. "The steamer Washington is now loading on Puget Sound, and the steamer Cranley will arrive here about January 18. It is probable that another boat w ill come later, as I have been advised this is likely. They will need our food stuffs right along on the other side to feed those unfortunate people. Ap proximately JSO.000 to $70,000 Is the probable amount contributed by the two states for these first two ships. The remainder of the cargo will be made up from this fund that has been placed in my hands for the purpose." Recent contributions of rash and foodstuffs to the Oregon committee are: Cash.
