name "Albert" shall be given to an
avenue or public square in Paris in
honor of the King of Belgium.
The rue de Berlin already has been
changed to the rue de Liege and it Is
proposed to give a Belgian or English
name to the Avenue de l'Opera, which
before 1870 was the Avenue Napoleon.
The former Avenue d'Allemagne is now
the Avenue Jean Jaures.
The city of Rouen has changed the
name' of the Boulevard Canchois to
Boulevard des Beiges.
' The Place de la Gars In Orleans has
been changed to Place Albert I and
two bridges over the Loire have been
renamed George V and Nicholas IL
This is only the beginning of the
radical changes of nomenclature that
will mark the war in all towns of
France. The transformation Is not con
fined to names of streets, squares and
places. All German and Austrian
names of products already have dis
appeared. Eau de Cologne is to be
called Eau de Louvain or Eau de Pro
vence. Viennese bread Is now called
Pain Llegois.
In the phonograph parlors all names
of German pieces have been marked off
the programmes.

LONDON', Dec 13. That th famine
in Belgium la no respecter of persons
was vividly brought home by a letter
received today by the American Com
mission from Henry W. Diederich, the
United . States Consul-Ceneral at
Antwerp, who appeals for food for his
family, for his consular staff and for
himself. Mr. Diederich writes:
"About ten days ago Jarvls Bell, of
New York, while on his way to Brus
sels, kindly Informed me that If my
family and myself needed any thins to
let him or the relief committee know
and that they would provide as best
they could.
"At the time the offer was made I
did not think It would be necessary to
make use of It, but we have been
suddenly made to realize that Antwerp
Is not vlctuallzed as common report
bag it. as a few days ago all the bakers
in the city declared they were no
longer able to supply bread for lack of
flour.
"For the time being- they again have
Started their work, but the outlook for
a steady supply of bread this Winter
In gloomy. In view of this condition,
I would request the American relief
committee to let me have at the earliest
opportunity some flour for myself and
the families of the consular staff.
In these words King Albert, of the
Belgians, replied to a message of good
wishes sent to him by the American
Commission for Relief in Belgium, by
saying: "Tour work should save
Belgium from famine."
"His Majesty." the King's reply con
tinues, "earnestly congratulates your
commission on Its generous and en
lightened initiative. He desires that
you should know he Is grateful."

WASHINGTON. Deo. 12. A shipment
of 401 cases of hospital supplies and
clothing for women and children was
made by the American Red Cross today
to the war-stricken countries of Eu
rope. France will receive 89 cases and
an additional donation of 6,000,000
cigarettes. Germany will get 71 cases.
Austro-Hungary 71 cases and 20 bales
of absorbent cotton, and Belgium 159
cases.
Enclosing a check for $100. Vice
President Marshall wrote the Red
Cross today in part as follows:
"I fear the calls for help at home and
abroad are to be so numerous and all
compelling that many of us must cur
tail our pleasures at the behest of duty
and that larger charity which spells
love.

Simplicity surrounded the preparations
for the funeral of Joseph Smith, presi
dent of the Reorganized Church of
Latter Day Saints, to be held here to
morrow. President Smith died Thurs
day after a lingering Illness. Services
will be held in accordance with the
directions of the dead patriarch, who
In the days when he lay between life
and dealh calmly arranged for his
burial.
A single wreath will adorn the cas
ket, since Mr. Smith urged that money
that might be spent for flowers should
go to charity, and there will be no
extra song Bervlce, as he chose the few
simple hymns to be sung.
The casket will be of the plainest
and no draping will toe seen on pulpit
or building. Mr. Smith arranged every
detail, even to the number of carriages
and the suit In which he Is to be
burled. . .
The Quorum of Twelve, the highest
ruling body In the church, will attend
the funeral. U. W. Green, a mission
ary In Jerusalem, and Homer Griffith,
who has been doing similar work In
Australia, sent messages today, an
nouncing that they will be present.
Both had been notified of the presi

National Prohibition Resolution to Be
Debated Klgkt Hour December

WASHINGTON, Dec. 12. The issues
of National prohibition nd woman suf
frage will bo placed squarely before
Ihe House of Representatives as a re
sult of action taken today by the House
rules committee, when it decided to
report special rules for the considera
tion of Constitutional amendments on
both subjects. Incidentally, the com
mittee put an end to all hope of an ex
tended holiday recess.
Representative Henry; chairman of
the rules committee, asserted the rule
on the Hobson prohibition resolution
would be presented December 22 and
that the resolution after eight hours
of debate would be pressed to a vote on
that date. The suffrage resolution, he
aid. would follow immediately. The
prohibition resolution would prohibit
the sale, manufacture and exportation
for sale of "intoxicating liquors for
beverage purposes in the United States
and all territory subject to the juris
diction thereof forever."
The suffrage amendment would de
clare that the right of citizens to vote
should not be denied or abridged on
account of sex.

LONDON, Dec L (Correspondence
of the Associated Press.) Providing
mounts for the British .army, so con
stantly exposed to German fire on the
Continent, keeps five remount depots in
England and Ireland busy.
Each depot is under direction of an
army officer, who is assisted by vet
erinarians. - rough-riders, grooms and
blacksmiths. Many Canadians from the
Western provinces have been drafted
Into the remount service because of
their skill as horsemen and experience
in managing wild animals.
Both artillery and cavalry have suf
fered a heavy loss of animals In Bel
gium and France and there is constant
demand for many different kinds of
animals. Hunters, carthorses, cobs and
heavy animals for vans used by the
commissary are bought by the remount
officers and shaped up for the field.

tive Gardner's demand for a hearing on
his resolution for an investigation into
the military preparedness of the coun
try was voted down today by the Hous
rules committee by a straight party
vote of five to three. All the Demo
crats voted against it.
