Marshall, owner of lots 25 and 26, block 31, corner of First street and Massa chusetts avenue, now has under consideration the erection of a business block 50x40, two stories. Her renter is already assured and will be here some time in December to open a mercantile establishment, and occupy the second story for living- apartments. The foundation for the build ing" will be laid at once and construction rushed to completion as soon as possible. FIRST BUSINESS BLOCK TO BE BUILT at FLAVEL McKern & Owens,- of Portland, have taken the contract to erect the above business block on lot 25, block 29, First St., and Rhode Island Ave., which is to be constructed of frame and consisting of 6 store rooms, plate glass fronts. They are on the ground now and arranging for construction immediately. The owner, P. Ellis, having had inquiries for additional floor space and rooms above, is now considering the enlarging of the present building plans to take in the adjoining lot, with rooms for hotel purposes on the second floor, using the center store room as the office and stairway. FLAVEL IS THE TERMINUS FOR THESE SHIPS The Great Northern, the first of the Hill ocean grayhounda to be completed, will be ready to take her trial spin by the latter part of next month, and she will be ready for her trip from Philadelphia to the mouth of the Columbia River, ivia the Panama Canal, not later than January 25th. L. C. Oilman, president of the Hill lines in Oregon and chief executive of the Great Northern Steamship Company, which will operate the palatial passenger steam erB between the Columbia River and California, has just arrived from an inspection of these twin leviathans, which are being built at a cost of J5.000.000 at the Cramp Shipbuilding Yards. - , . -.. "The Great Northern ia structurally complete rigrht now," said Mr. Oilman. "All she needs is her furnishings, fixtures and interior decorations Installed. While her sister ship, the Northern Pacific, was launched only a short time ago, she was much further along structurally when she took her maiden dip than was the Great Northern, and the Cramp people definitely assured me that the Northern Pacific will not be more than six weeks behind the Great Northern, so that she ought to be ready to start for the Coast by March 1st. "Calvin Stone, the new traffic manager of the operating company, ia now in New York and Philadelphia arranging for obtaining a full cargo of freight and a big passenger list for the steamers on their trips thrdugh the canal to the Coast, and be will not have any trouble in getting the business, from all present indica tions. "FLAVEL" is nearer the Orient by 294 miles on the round trip than is Seattle. "FLAVEL" is nearest the Orient by 846 . miles on the round trip than is San Francisco. . "FLAVEL" is nearer New York or Liverpool on a round trip by 600 miles than any point on Puget Sound. "FLAVEL" is the point where two ships of the same speed leaving New York or a European port arriving at the mouth of the Columbia River at the same time, the one landing at "FLAVEL" can discharge and load her cargo and be on its way to its destination before the ship Jbound for Puget Sound reaches the Seattle Harbor. "FLAVEL" is that interchange where two passengers leaving Seattle on the Shasta Limited bound for San Fran cisco, the one routed via "FLAVEL" on the Hill steamers will arrive in San Francisco before the through passenger arrives on the Shasta Lim ited. Lights and Water for Flavel The Pacific Power & Light Co. have just been given a franchise over the county highway between Astoria and Flavel for a high - power transmission line, using the Youngs Bay bridge to cross to the peninsula. Their survey is completed into the Hill docks and construction is to commence immediately. C. Jensen, of Portland, who is putting down the well for the S. P. & S., is down 600 feet and still drilling. It is hoped that by going down deep enough an artesian flow can be found. A 100,000 gallon water tank is being erected, also two 600-gallon oil tanks and an umbrella shed leading from the depot to the main line track is well under way.
