The war widow is the devoted wife who faces the perils of battle ' by proxy, the little woman who stays at home while her husband fences with death on foreign soil. Yet the war widow Is not confined, to the soldier' wife, for she whose husband is In the war zone, as yet not called to the front. but expecting hourly summons. Is also one of this clan. There is no room in the heart of a war widow for hatred, even of those who threaten her husband's life. Those who have remained behind in Portland feel no animosity toward each other. Though race may differ, their hearts are too full of anxiety for those at the front. The tense scanning of news paper reports of engagements where her husband might be, the anxious ex pectancy with which she greets the mailman, are too much a part of the war widow's daily life to allow for the harboring of an echo of the jealousies of nations. As she pursued her housewifely du ties several months ago, Mrs. Paul Rei- mers little thought that in a few days she would be a war widow. - But this was to be the case. Her husband, a manufacturer and capitalist of Port land, received a call from the father land, in whose service hp had been raised to the rank of Captain. His headquar ters are at Kiel or in Wilhelrashaven. Meanwhile Mrs. Reimers waits for word from him and is cheered by the few notes of well-being that leak through the German censorship. A daughter of 16 years, a boy of 13 and a four-months-old son remain with the mother in Portland. The former Miss Margaret Montgom ery, now Mrs. Rufus Zogbaum, is al most a war widow. Her husband. Lieutenant Rufus Zogbaum. has left her alone in London, but he only has come to the States on business and will re turn. He has been in charge of the German embassy in London since the Ambassador was recalled. Mrs. Zok baum was married but last August in London. She has won much fame as a writer and has many friends In Port land. With her Teturn to her husband in Germany Indefinitely postponed by the war. Mrs. Conrad DelbruecK, formerly Miss Use Koehler, remains in Portland with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Koehler. Her husband, who is a rich manufacturing chemist of Elberfeld. Germany, has not yet been drafted into army service, according to last word received in Portland, but he is of eli gible age and his future selection is not an improbability. Mrs. Delbrueck has been married for three years and last Spring came to Portland for visit to her parents. THE HAGUE. Nov. 5. Antwerp Cathedral's greatest treasure is Rubens Descent From the Cross, the famous triptych said to have had its birth In the desire of the painter to avoid a lawsuit. At the command of Albert and Isabella he had consented to make Antwerp his home, and built himself a house which unfortunately trenched on the ground of the Honorable Company Arquebusiers. Rather than pay com pensation in money. Rubens offered to paint the plaintiffs a picture of Christopher, bearer of Christ and patron saint of the guild. The mag nificent work was done and placed in position in the cathedral in 1612. There is a legend that the head and neck of the Virgin having been dam aged by riotous students in Rubens studio. Van Dyck was selected by the culprits to repair the damage, which was done eo well that the master f or- J gave the sons of Belial.
