ORGANIZATION FORMED FOR ELEC
TION PLANS EDUCATIONAL. WORK.

to Prevent Spread of Diaeaae

Among aftermaths of the election is
the announcement that the Oregon
Society for Dental Education, which
conducted the campaign against the
dentistry bill, will become a perma
nent organization. Its purpose will be
to extend dental welfare work alreaay
begun in Portland and other points In
the state.
It is proposed to make the society
auxiliary to the National Mouth
Hygiene Association, with headquar
ters at Cleveland, O., the president of
which Is Harvey P. Wiley, of pure
food fame. The fact that Oregon has
no branch of the National Society for
the Cure and Prevention of Tubercu
losis and the whole burden of tuber
cular work In this state falls upon
the Visiting Nurse Association, Is said
to emphasize the need of another or
ganization that will aid in the pre
vention of diseases that are contracted
largely through the mouth.
The Oregon Society for Dental Edu
cation, as a permanent organization,
will co-operate with the - Women's
Club, Congress of Mothers, Visiting
Nurse Association and other organiza
tions in their welfare work by giv
ing educational lectures on the proper
use and care of the mouth, by clinics
and other means that may cure and
prevent disease through mouth hygiene.
Some of this welfare work, which
now is under way, is the toothbrush
drill in the Buckman School, examina
tion of children's mouths at- the Par
ents' Educational Bureau at the Mult
nomah County Courthouse and the
municipal clinic at the City HalL In
Eugene lectures are being given in
the schools by local dentists and both
there and at Pendleton free clinics are
being arranged for.
The society will not confine Us mem
bership to dentists and will seek to
do a broad humanitarian work in dis
ease prevention. Lecturers from the
National Mouth Hygiene Association
will be sent to Oregon, and the work
In this state will follow the lines of
endeavor that have been taken up ac
tively in Middle West and Eastern
states.
ALIENS MAY NOT VOTE
Ruling Made at Albany That New
Law Is Effective Now.
ALBANY, Or., Nov. 7. (Special.)
Foreign-born residents without full
citizenship papers will not be permitted
to vote in the city election here Decem
ber 7.
Citv Recorder Van Tassel was ad
vised by Citv Attorney swan today that
the amendment passed last Tuesday is
in effect now and hence he will refuse
hereafter to register voters with first
papers only and will cancel the regis
trations of six who have registered al
ready.
Several other cities in the state will
hold city elections the same day as Al
bany and like conditions doubtless will
obtain. With registration here brisk
now for city election, a question arose
as to whether the amendment is in ef
feet now or not until the proclamation
of the - Governor declaring the result.
City Attorney Swan, following the de
cision of the State supreme court, aa
vised that the amendment went into ef
feet when the polls closed last Tuesday
night.
Yearly Output "Worth $1,875,000.
SALEM, Or., Nov. 7. (Special.) La
bor Commissioner Hoff. who is gather
ing data for his biennial report, an
nounced today that the eight plants
manufacturing woolen goods in the
state were valued at 1,045,000 and that
they produce $1,875,000 worth of goods
annually. They operate 300 days a
year, with an average daily output of
$6250 in value. They employ 345
skilled workers, 185 unskilled and 324
women. Skilled workers receive an
average daily wage of 12.50 and un
skilled $1.88. The lowest daily wage
of women is $1.17 and the average wage
of boys is $1.2s.
