Variety and quality seem to be the keynote of the programme on at the Sunset Theater. "Daylight." a strong and well-balanced romance, heads the bill. The plot centers about a talented and rich young composer who Is threat ened with blindness. He is sent to the mountains to rest and meets a young musician, Marie, with whom he falls In love at ftrst sight. Ha Is stricken with total blindness soon-after his ar rival at the mountain resort and comes to Marie for help. After a brief court ship they are married and he produces his greatest song. Success causes him to neglect his wife, but harmony is restored by a simple and beautiful thought. "Back to .the Kitchen" la the title of a Majestic comedy, the mlxups result in a double wedding In the closing scene, which is particularly funny. "Bad Man Mason" Is the title of a drama which is above the average in thought and plot, the hero is a "bad man" who is not as bad as he is sup posed to be. His finer traits crop out most unexpectedly. He wins the hand of the girl who is "too good for him" by bis manliness. The Mutual weekly has some new and Interesting pictures from the battlefields. "Painted Hills," the 11th Installment of "Trey o' Hearts." will be shown at the Star Theater beginning today. In this chapter Judith s heart again falls her when she tries to kill Alan Law, her enemy ana the man she loves. She is anslsted by a professional crook, "Hopl Jim" Blade, whom her father en gages for that purpose, offering him a large sum of money. How Judith escapes the unwelcome attentions of "Hopi" forms a surpris ing and interesting conclusion. Anna Little, the beautiful, dashing Universal star, appeara with Herbert Rawlinson In "Kid Reagan's Hands," a two-reel drama of the ring. 'Kid V great question Is how to "beat up" the bully who has insulted his sweetheart and still win the champion ship for which he Is contending. He does it, alright, and It is visualised In this absorbing film. "Cupid, Victor, is a quaint fantasy showing how, with the aid of Cupid, an ambitious young woman ia turned from the pathway of fame Into the path of love. The animated weekly depicts Inter esting and instructive current events, both abroad and at home. Wednesday . fascinating little Mar guerite Clark, whose great stage suc cess. "Baby Mine," made a place for her in the hearts of Americans, will be seen in the Famous Players' Company production, "wildflower." This la a story that savors of fra grant forests and the freedom of the open. One whose wholesomeness domi nates plot and action and makes us forget the cruelty and deceit of civilisation. For four days "Wildflower" will shed her fragrance In Portland. that she has followed. She sends the girl to a boarding school, tells her that her mother is a widow and tries to keep from her the lure or tne rootlights and the moral pitfalls adjacent to them. The girl, however, on one of her visits home learns from her drunken father the truth, goes to the theater, where she discovers her mother, and finally, in secret, becomes a burlesque queen. BY MART AITNB SMITH. EVERT moving-picture theater In the city will run slides calling at tention to the Manufacturers' and Land Products Show-, to be held at the Armory. October 26 to November 14. The Portland branch of the Motion Picture Exhibitors' League has of fered to help the enterprise in any way possible. A committee consisting of G. T. Holtzclaw, manager of the Circle Theater, and W. E. Stevens, secretary of the organisation, has been appoint ed to co-operate with the management of the show and arrange for the part the exhibitors will have In the enter prise. President James and other officers of the league have agreed to install two projection machines of the most improved pattern. One side of the projection booth will be left open, that Land Show visitors may see the . operator at work. The exhibitors will install the two machines and furnish experienced operators to answer all questions regarding moving pictures. One afternoon will be set aside in the . show as exhibitors' afternoon, when . managers of Portland photoplay . nouses and their families will attend, and a special programme will be given. As the new National Theater nears completion It becomes apparent that some building records have been smashed. Active work on Its construction did not begin until June 1. The projectors Immediately prepared to rush things with all possible speed in view r tne certain approach of Fall or early Win ter before it could be finished. Nobody concerned in It dared do more than hope that it could be opened before some time in November. Despite unfavorable conditions and almost unsurmountable obstacles at times the work has steadily gone for ward without any serious delay. -such as might be expected in some of Its myriad of details. Today the man agement Is In- a position to announce that it will positively be ready for Its formal opening some time this month. A diligent search through local build ing statistics discloses the fact that all construction records for pretentious structures of a similar class have been lowered more than two weeks. The freecoers are just adding the finishing touches to the decorative pen dants and cornices, and the electricians are rapidly nearlng the end of what will be one of the most elaborate lighting systems ever Installed, in any Portland building.
