Chat and Gossip of
Plays and Players
By Leone Caaa Baer.
, Whenever a. leading- woman falls to
register a hit. If you ask her opinion
you'll find out that the play -wras rotten.,
P. S. This Is true also of stars, male
or female, and leading men.
. According to a New Tork exchange,
theatrical folk out of engagements
through managerial -war scare are
courting Cupid. An enterprising young
man is selling copies of the Matrimonial
News at 5 cents per on Broadway.
Every night, the young man declares,
he sells more than 100 copies, the buy
ers ranging all the way from slim and
slender chorus girls and -blase youths
to corpulent gentlemen of middle age
and women who have reached the stage
where any sort of a marriage would be
acceptable.
And not the least of the buyers are
theatrical folk, the young Cupid broker
says, both men and women of the stage
readily giving up a nickel to look over
a long list of those who would give
anywhere from $5000 to $50,000 to have
someone lead them to the altar.
The war is believed to be largely ac
countable for this, artists who find
themselves out of engagements owing
to the timidity of managers, figuring
that their forced vacation would not be
at all badly spent if they could firmly
attach themselves to a nice fat bank
roll, especially if it is as large as many
of those advertised In the love news
papers.
Apparently a rich husband or wife.
Is rather to be chosen than a brief sea
eon In the two-a-day.
Also there Is always the
court after the war is over.
divorce
Also it might prove that those who
live on the bright white way lnvarl
ably see clearest.
And before we close the subject, you
never can tell when even the vainest
person alive may not decide that
dally meal ticket Is better than press
agent adulation.
Patiently and without repining I am
awaiting to be shown the first person
to return from the war zone without
having seen at least one or two spies
stood up and shot down.
Florence Roberts, of the Baker Play
ers, says that her idea of the greatest
tragedy of the times is when a soprano
prima donna begins to develop a bass
voice.
Mary Edgett Baker, pressed Into con
versation, says her idea of Time's trag
edy is when baby blonde hair begins
to turn dark at the roots.
"A buffet has been opened by the
Societies of Actors and Actresses in
Paris for needy stage people, of whom
there are thousands in Paris. Not a
theater is open. Two meals a day will
be given to any actor, actress or thea
ter employe at the buffet." Dramatic

Seventeen children from the Isadora
Duncan school in Paris came in to New
York September 14, aboard the Finland,
of the Bed Star Lane, bound from Liv
erpool. Miss Duncan has turned her
school building over as a Red Cross
hospital. Her brother, Augustus Duncan,
and his wire came over with the pupils,
who, with the exception of Jean Tor
rini, a French boy 8 years old, are all
girls of several nationalities whose
ages range from 7 to 19. Miss Duncan
Is ill. said her brother, and will come
on the next steamer from Enjrland.
The Immigration inspectors sent the
children to Ellis Island to await the
action of the board of special inauirv.
Appeals will be made to Washington
and the children probably will be re
leased. Mr. Duncan said his sister will
establish a school in New Tork, as sev
eral of the children, daughters of de
pendent parents, are bound to her until
they are 21 years old. v
Fannie Ward, the actress, now play
ing in "Madam President" at the Tre
mont Theater, in Boston, Is the recip
ient of a letter from the British War
Office In which the English authorities
formally accepted her offer of her two
English homes as sheltering places for
wounded British soldiers and sailors.
Miss Ward, who Is an American girl,
lias lived in London for some - years,
and, with the coming of war, she cabled
the British authorities at once, offering
them the use of her two homes in
case they were needed for hospital
work..
The news has come that they had
been accepted, and are being used to
splendid advantage. The Winter home
of Miss Ward is located in the exclu
sive Berkeley Square, in London, and
is a magnificent mansion of 20 rooms.
A retinue of servants left in charge
of the place has also been tendered
the government at Miss Ward's expense.
Already the dainty chambers have been
transformed into hospital wards where
the maimed and suffering soldiery of
England is oeing cared for.
Cot beds have been placed in the halls
and corridors and, where formerly bril
llant social events were held, a work
of mercy is now going on night and
-day.
Directly across the street from the
Ward home Is the home of the Marquis
or Lansdowne.
Miss Ward's ex-husband, Sam Lewis,
the "diamond king," bought her the
houses.
Speaking of the higher cost of chorus
girls, Flo Ziegfeld, Jr., says:
"Every year I must search longer
ana farther to ilnd precisely the type
of girl I want. In the present 'Follies'
I have but four New York girls. The
rest hall from as far as Portland, Me.,
ana as lar west as Portland. Or."

'TWILIGHT SLEEP' STUDIED
Woman Physician Calls 'ew Drug
Boon to Mothers.
NEW YORK, Sept. 13. The first
American woman physician to study the
"Twilight Sleep," as the painless
method of childbirth brought to perfec
tion by German physicians at Freiberg,
Germany, is Dr. Elizabeth A. Bruyn,
of 102 Lafferts place, Brooklyn, who
returned from Europe recently on the
American liner St- Paul. Dr. Bruyn
brought back with her a small quan
tity of scopolamin and narcophen, the
two drugs used in the treatment.
Dr. Bruyn, who Is an assistant in the
medical division at the Williamsburg
Hospital and Is connected with the Sal
vation Army Hospital in Manhattan,
is enthusiastic when she discusses the
ultimate relief from pain which it will
afford womankind. As" an Immediate
result of her study of the method, she
said, she probably will use the "Twi
light Sleep" in many of her own cases.
"It is a fact," she said, "that mothers
are awakening every day at Frauen-
klinik, and their faces wreathed with
smiles of delight and surprise, are re
ceiving into their arms babies that
they actually had not known had come
into the world. It was inspiring. I
saw mothers'take their first exercises,
prescribed for them on the evening of
the first day after the baby's arrival
The majority of the patients -are al
lowed to leave for home on the sixth
day after they become mothers.
"One of the strange things I noticed
was that after the third injection of
the pain killing drug the average pa
tlent was able to answer questions, but
that these" answers seemed to be in
te.lligent only as to events preceding
the third injection. All that happened
subsequently, until the effect of the
drug had been spent, was a blank.
