BABY SEAL, RAISED AS PET,
1 '
:
HAIR SEAL FOUND BY ZENAS COPELAND AT NEWPORT, OR.
NEWPORT Or., July 18. (Special.) That a man's heart may be
bigger than his desire for money was shown in tho case of Zenas Cope
land. of Newport, who found a baby hair seal on the beach and brought
it home for a pet. nourishment out of a bottle and was as gentle
and tame as any domestic animal.
But Copeland found that some children would poke sticks at the seal
and tease it; and, realizing that he could not always be close by to
watch it he turned it loose in Yaquina Bay, but not until after he
had had 'many offers from various Summer visitors.
When turned loose the baby seal seemed at a loss what to do. It
made three trips to the beach and waited, apparently, for somebody
to nick -it up and feed it. Each time it was picked up by Copeland,
and after four trips out to the middle of the bay In his launch, Cope
land had the satisfaction of seeing the seal head for the ocean, swim
ming with great speed.
