When the oratory ' had ceased, Mr. Harkness was discov- ered at the bottom of a 9-.to-4 score, 5 and' Portland had rung up Its fourth 'victory, and Its third wfn in a row, t for the series. The afternoon game went against the locals 6 to 4. Mr. Bud Ryan fittingly officiated for Patrick Henry in the nxorntflg contest. !' With the score t to 2 for the King's followers in the seventh, . Mr. Ryan ? Injected the peroration of his famous ' speech, "Give us a homo run or we'll ;take one anyway," by poling one over ' the right-field wall. This tied the r score and laid the cause of the Col Jf onies safely on Ice. Just to impress the King with the I cause of Liberty, the Beaver Colonists I whacked him for six safe hits and as many runs in the eighth. Ten Col- on lata trotted to the plate In this rous ing period. Speck Harkness Shudders. After Patrick Henry Ryan had sub sided on a smasif to Leard. John Han cock Kores nicked one through short for a bit. Lober sent a scorcher to center. With two on. Robert Morris Fisher strode to the plate. Mr. Hark ness, glimpsing the whites of his eyes, shuddered, and walked him on purpose. With the sacks bulging, Walter Mc Gredie assumed the strategical role of : Georga Washington to great effect. He . yanked Thomas Jefferson West, and sent John Adams Brash ear up to bat for him. . Mr. Brasbear, after letting one pass and taking a swing at a bad one, knocked the ball down before the . plate. This unethical proceeding un nerved Mr. Harkness. He tore madly In, slipped, mowed up several yards nf lawn, and sat on the ball. Mr. Brashear reached first and Kores cored. : ' " ' ' ow Processloa, Follows. After that. It was a procession. Ban croft smashed safe and Lober and 'Fisher counted. Bancroft stole sec ond. Derrick hit through short. .On a double steal, Bancroft counted. Rodg ers sent a screamer to left for two bases and Derrick came In. Doane went out. Ryan, next up, 'fearing that another hit would violate the anti fireworks ordinance, fouled out to Lltschl and the Inning was over. Rleger, who upheld the Colonist 'cause in the ninth, held the Tigers to one run. Venice made Its other runs In the first and third Innings by hitting Hi ' West at timely moments. In the ninth Evans walked Bayless and Litschi ' drew a double to the right field fence, Bay less crossed the plate, after - Doane caught McDonnell's sacrifice fly. Mc Ardle Joined Litschi on the bases when Bill Rodgers muffed his infield fly. El liott filled the bases by beating out a bunt to Evans. After Bliss, a pinch hitter, had re ceived -one ball. Manager McCredle yanked Evans and Rieger commenced pitching for Portland. Hogan pro tested the change In pitchers, but to r. .vail Then Han showed his au thority by putting Meloan, another pinch hitter, at bat to replace -Bliss. Litschi scored when Meloan was being put out at fist, Rieger to Derrick. Carlisle brought In the remaining two runs with a long single to the right field fence. Although Powell pitched poor ball after replacing "Cack" Henley, he gets the credit for yesterday's win. 'In tile eighth inning, with the score 2 and 2, Powell allowed Ryan a double. Ryan stole third and crossed the plate when Powell forced him by walking Kores, Lober and Tantz, consecutively. The latter three were left on bases when Kvans popped to McArdle for -the third out. In pur suance of an apparent policy it has fol lowed several weeks of dropping the first three of four games and coming strong on the finish of a- series, San Francisco hoisted itself back to third place by winning a double-header to day from Sacramento, scores: 3 to 0 and 8 to 2. "Lefty" Leifield broke the losing streak of the Seals in the morning by shutting out' the Sacs with two lonely hits. San Francisco punished Klawit ter in the first and seventh with five hits and three runs. The Sacs filled the' bases in the . eighth, one out, but, speedy fielding and tight pitching pulled the Seals out. In the afternoon Gregory was hit 13 times, and the Seals, assisted by four Sacramento errors, won all the way. Fanning had the Wolves in his power In all but the fourth inning, when they gathered three hits and a couple of runs. Orr was bounced in the sixth for protesting a decision.
