"Phenom" Ehmke is no longer a phenom. He lost his third game today and takes his place among the Just comraon-every-day heavers of the Coast League , Hi West, Portland's pitcher, won his own game with a three-bagger In the second, which drove in two runs. With this triple, a single, a walk and a hit batsman, Portland scored the three runs in the second frame. They didn't come within a mile of scoring again, but "it was enough to beat the Angels, 3 to 2, and put the series also 3 to 2,, in favor of the Beavers. It was a really good game. Hi West, though hit harder than Kid Ehmke. used his noodle, and. asset Ehmke as yet has not mastered, and in the pinches he was nigh invincible. Twice the Angels had a chance and a good one. either to tie up the game or forge ahead, but West took a new hitch on his pantaloons, steamed up on the ball and it was all off. Brashear Plays First. Doane laid off today because of his injured, ankle, hurt yesterday, and Derrick- was sent to , right and Roy Brashear went to first. At different times Dillon had all three of 'his catchers in the game and only one of them. Meek, got a hit. Ehmke lost his own game by a bit of wiidness in the second frame. He walked Lober. first up, and then hit I ?, -Speas in the back with one of his wild underhanded flings. Tants forced Lober - - at third, Ehmke to MeUger. Mc , Credie hopped out of the hole and t . looked as if he was going to chew Mc I 'Carthy up, clothes and all, but with one - burst of wrath over the decision he subsided and meekly hove to. The whole outfield here moved in and Hi West, using his head again, lammed one out, just over Maggert's head, which under the circumstances went for a triple, and scored both ..Speas and Yantz. Bancroft singled over short, scoring West, and thereafter not a Beaver got . beyond him. . West Tightens Oa Need. The Angels moped along until the r" fifth, when Johnson and Metsger . singled, the former scoring on an out- j: field fly. In the ninth, Maggert and Abstein - both started with singles, and it looked good, but West steamed up and Ellis forced AbBtein at second, Maggert, .: . however, scoring. Then Johnson tried . to kill the ball, with the usual result, ,s he forcing Ellis at second and Yants threw Metzger out at first, when George dumped the ball in front of -' the plate. It was a good game. COLTS TIGHTEN OP Weak Spots Strengthened Lineup' at Seattle. in GOOD GAMES ARE PLAYED Improvement This Series Noted by Fans and Luck Cornea to Men In , All Positions Where Fate Be fore Denied Chance to Show. BY PORTUS BAXTER. SEATTLE, June 27. (Special.) The Portland Colts are a much better team than when they appeared in Seattle during the latter part of May. In that series Manager Nick Wllliama, re marked that his team did not seem to be able to get anywhere in Seattle. Now matter how the game started, if Seattle needed a few runs, It made them. Things have changed, and it certainly cannot be explained on the basis that Seattle has gone back. The Giants are playing a slashing, agressive game, and their, pitchers are working well, but Portland, during the past week, has met them at every turn and showed just as good ball. Barring accidents, Nick Williams will not have to make further changes in his line-up for the remainder ot the season. Portland Team Strengthened. Candidly, there Is not a weak spot In the Portland line-up. Bobby Coltrin is playing a remarkable game at short one that would surely land him in the big circuit if he added a little more to his hitting. Pat Callahan, who is either a corking good right fielder or pitcher, and always a hard hitter, merits the attention of leagues of a higher classi fication. Compared to last season, the amount jot ground he is covering iq the out field Is amazing. Milligan, in center, is commencing to show his true class. The suspension of Murray has given Haworlh a chance to. show what he can do behind the bat and he has gone up a handful of points in the estima tion of Seaftle since be caught his first game here several weeks ago. It is almost Impossible to steal bases on him. Pitchers' Luck Varies.' Eastley ' Is one of the hardest pitch ers in the league to beat and despite the games he plays in the outfield, Callahan is ready to give any club an argument "Tiny" Leonard is an un lucky pitcher in Seattle, but he has Improved much since the opening of PACIFIC COAST Clob Setting Recorda. Salveson, one of the fling ers dug up this season by Walter Mc Credie, did not make much of an im pression in the game he worked here some time ago, but if anyone will take the trouble to inspect the score, he will find that even then the lad from Los Angeles was effective after the first Inning. Seattle managed to beat Salve- son last Tuesday 2 to 1, but up to th eighth inning he had Seattle eating out of his hand.
