12 . THE STJNTDAY OREGONIAN, POETLAXD, MAY 17, " 1914. WITHYCOIE WINS, RETURNS INDICATE Smith Appears to Be Sure to Be His Democratic Oppo nent for Governor. TWO-THIRDS OF VOTE IN Moser Likely Defeated In Republican Contest by About 10,500 Ben . nett Second in Democratic Race, Fig-urea Forecast. (Continued From First Page.) ably Folk, Douglas and Josephine, are close. While, on the Republican ticket. Dr. Withycombe carried a majority of the counties, each of the leading: candidates was ' favored with one or more. Mr. Moser apparently has carried Clatsop and Tillamook; Mr. Johns his former home county of Baker; Mr. Brownell his home county of Clackamas; Mr. Craw ford, Klamath and possibly Morrow, and Mr. Geer, Lincoln. Brown Seemingly Wins. Although George M. Brown lost Mult nomah County to Frank S. Grant by ap proximately 4000, the outside vote more than offsets Mr. Grant's gain, and Mr. Brown" seemingly is nominated by a plurality- of 4500 to 6000. William P. Lord is third and J. J. Johnson fourth. With the exception of Justices Bean and McBride, who have substantial . leads, the Supreme Court ticket is In doubt. Three are running neck and neck for the other two places. JFlgrurea Show Standfasts. The following figures show the status of the several candidates and are the totals of incomplete returns from 29 counties and include all except about 2000 votes in Multnomah County: Bean 27.166 McBride .. 28,346 Benson -. 22,516 McNary 22,285 Harris 22.017 Cleetori 20.085 Richardson 12,512 D'Arcy 11,526 In Multnomah County Benson ran ahead, of both Harris and McNary, but in the state, outside of Multnomah, the latter two both have a lead over Judge Benson, with a slight. advantage in fa vor of Judge McNary. . Inasmuch as the count Is nearer complete in Multnomah than in the rest of the state, the indications are that the two places In doubt will go to McNary and Harris. Judge Cleeton, who received a com plimentary vote in Multnomah. . where he is best known, did not run so well in the state at large. There seems to be no question concerning his defeat. O. P. HofT Renominated. O. P. Hoft is nominated for Labor Commissioner, Frank J. Miller for Rail road Commissioner, John H. Lewis for tate Engineer and Ralph E. Williams for National committeeman on the Re publican ticket. On the Democratic ticket H. M. Es terly is the chosen National committee man.
