in leaving a. .package containing !3
counterfeits of $5 gold pieces between
the tub and the wall, led to the arrest
of three alleged makers or counterfeit
money. W. C. Vaughn, in Portland

Dutcher, at Seattle.
Harry Stiles was the name written
on the register at the Congress by a
man who came there Saturday night a
week ago. He was assigned to room
604. He left the hotel Sunday night,
leaving his baggage and saying he
would let the hotel know where to
eend it While he was at the Congre
one man called on him, and spent some
time with him In his room. ,
Monday J. W. Long, proprietor of the
Congress, made an Investigation of the
bathtub in room 604, and found the
shiny new counterfeit coins neatly
wrapped in paper, as a stack of real
money is wrapped in a. bank.

States Secret Service agent.
Stiles had been under the survei'lance
of the Federal authorities, on suspicion
of being an opium smuggler, at Seattle,
and aiter his arrival in Portland Sat
urday. The man who called on lum,
Bald to have been W. C. Vaughn, was
also watched. It was found, that he
"Was staying at the Broadway Hotel.
Vaughn was arrested Tuesday in
Portland by Mr. Glover and Wiiliam
MacSwain, Deputy United States Mar
shal, and was lodged in the County
Jail.
Stiles or Stone, for the Federal of
ficials who have been working on the
case say that the name Stiles is an
alias, was arrested at Spokane Friday
night, simultaneously with the arrest
at Seattle of Dutcher, said to be the
third member of the gang.
A telegram from Stiles at Spokane
to the Congress Hotel Wednesday, ask
ing that his baggage be sent there, led
to his apprehension and arrest
Cottage Said to Be Mint.
A secluded cottage on Dearborn
street, Seattle, is said to have been the
manufacturing headquarters of the
gang, whose spurious mintage has been
passed in Portland, Seattle, Olympia,
Tacoma, Bellingham, Anacortes. Wash.;
Everett Wash., and Auburn, Wash.
Federal secret service men for some
time had been on the lookout for the
makers of the gold-plated lead coins
that have appeared in these cities.
Wore than 100 have been rejected when
presented for deposit at banks in the
cities named, particularly those around
Puget Sound.
Vaughn, who is 55 years old, says
that he formerly was a saloonkeeper
at Great Falls, Mont, and later was In
the real estate business at Spokane.
Stone, or Stiles, is said to be. a civil
engineer. Dutcher is said to aver that
although he was in good circumstances
a few years asro. he is now destitute.
He is said to have acted as a guard
at the Dearborn-street mint, helpin
with the work of counterfeiting, but
passing none of the coins. Vaughn is
believed to be the expert counterfeiter,
while Stiles is alleged to have been
the agent who put the "queer" currency
in circulation.
SCHOOL PURCHASE ASKED

The South Portland Boosters, at their
regular meeting Thursday night at the
St. Laurence Hall, Third and Sherman
streets, voted unanimously to petition
the Board of Education to enter into
negotiations with the City Commission
ers for the use of the vacant tract
known as the Reservoir block for the
eite of the new Shattuck School, and
to purchase the block to the west for
a playground and to enable the city to
have an entrance from the Park blocks
to the South Portland boulevard.
In the event of this arrangement not
being feasible, the club is In favor of
a block facing the park.
The officers recounted the work of
the year, showing hard-surface streets,
gulches tilled, better street lighting and
the South Portland boulevard.
Election of officers resulted as fol
lows: George B. Thomas, president; J.
C. Smith, vice-president; A. Rosenstein,
treasurer, and Burt C. Jones, secretary,
re-elected. An effort will be made to
increase the membership to 300. ,
GOOD ROAD PLANS FORMED
Ad Club Proposes to Have April 25
Celebration Widespread.
Not merely a county affair, but some
thing that shall be statewide and last
ing in its effects, is what the Ad Club
committee intends to make of Good
Koads day, April 25. A special com
mittee will be provided to organize
the state for observance of the day.
Those who have been asked to serve
on the committee are: Samuel Hill. C.
C. Chapman, William Hanley, J. L.
Meier, M. K. Smead, W. L. Crissey and
G. E. Waggoner.
Multnomah County's portion of the
work will be on the Columbia High
way. Arrangements are to be made
to run a special train out of Portland
and the effort will be made to put 2000
men at work on the highway Good
Roads day. Next Saturday night a
meeting of representatives of all ot the
clubs interested in the movement will
be held at the Commercial Club to dis
cuss observance of the day.
SWEET VOICE WINS HEARTS

eras endeared to the hearts of the
American people associated with fa
mous singers. The name of "Norma"
will always be associated with Giulia
Grisl, the Italian prima donna, born
1n 1810. When only 16 she appeared
in opera af Bologna, and won the hearts
of the audience by her sweetness and
wonderful compass of voice. It was
her heartfelt rendition of "Norma" that
has left it3 impress on musical his
tory. She sang in the United States during
the years preceding the Civil War, and

as the most popular singer of her time.
She died in 1869, and it is said the
last song she sang was the famou
selection from "norma" upon which
her reputation was made.

TURNER WILL PIPE WATER

ply Two Miles Distant.

The City of Turner contemplates the
installation of a municipal water sup
ply, according to an application filed
n the office of State Enerlneer Lewis
today. The city proposes to divert the
water of a spring, and carry it for a
distance of two miles through an eight-
ncu pipeline.
It has been urged that a municipal
water supply should be taken from
ome of the mountain streams for sup
plying the various towns throughout
the Willamette Valley, but as no defi-
lte steps have been taken looking: to
ward the installation of a plant of this
nature, many of the small towns have
recently decided to procure water
rights and put in municipal water sys
tems, as Turner is doing.
HALO PROVOKES OPERATOR
Miss Nellie Pigg, Back at Post, Dis
likes Being Made Heroine.
Laurels of heroism sat lightly on the
brow of Miss Nellie Pigg, the telephone
operator at the Perkins Hotel, who
during the fire Friday stayed at her
post at serious personal risk and tele
phoned to the roomers in. the hotel to
warn them of their possible danger.
She was back at her post yesterday.

The damage done to the hotel will be

Cold, rainy weather of the past week
has not injured the Lane County fruit
crop, according to J. O. Holt manager
of the Eugene Fruit Growers' Asso
ciation. His views are shared by
County Fruit Inspector Taylor.

Michael William Balfe Rises to Fame
and "Heart Sonfra" Preserve

Michael William Balfe was born in
Dublin, 1808. His father taught him
the rudiments ot music and to play the
violin when only 8 years old, receiving
great applause for his performance at a
Royal Exchange concert.
Five years later the death of his
father so agitated the boy that he went
to Charles Horn, the great musician.
and in desperation besought him to
take him with him to London. The

Balfe' was soon able to improvise and'
compose music with facility.
Later Count Mazzora, who at sight
of young Balfe grew pale and nearly
fainted, explained that only a few
months before he had burled his only
on. whom Balfe so closely resembled
that no one could have told them apart.
So greatly did the Count feel attracted
to young Balfe that he offered to take
him to Rome, receive him Into his fam
ily, and give him every opportunity for
the highest culture. Horn advised him
to go, and .with his affectionate patron
he went to Italy.
Balfe was ushered into a large but
dingy palace, whose halls suggested
the days of luxury. The servants
threw open a stately portal, revealing
splendid suite of rooms flooded with
oft radiance and royally furnished, in
which a queenly matron and beautiful
girl awaited their strange uest in wel
come. It was as if the dead had re
turned alive. The mother, with the
abandon of her race, caught Balfe to
her breast, covering his face with tears
and kisses and uttering the most touch
ing endearments, suggesting "I Dreamt
I Dwelt in Marble Halls."
Balfe was a true genius, and does not
seem to have properly appreciated the
favors heaped upon him. At the end of
a year Mazzora arranged for Balfe to
study at Milan during his absence in
England, and Balfe was able to impress
Glossop, of the great La Scala Theater,
with his ability as a composer.
He became a singer in Italian opera
at Paris, where he died October 19, 1870,
in his 63d year. Of 27 operas and seven
cantatas, the "Bohemian Girl" alone has
never lost Its hold on world-wide popu
lar favor. , ,

The Investigation has been in prog
ress several weeks, but no report has
been made nor it is known what action
is in contemplation.

claL) Before May 1 the North Pacific
Fruit Distributors will have deter
mined definitely as to whether an of

fice of the sentral celling agency will
be established in Portland. "The plac
ing of an office in Portland," said H.
F. Davidson, president of the Distribu
tors, "all depends on the amount of
tonnage we procure from the growers
in W estern Oregon. We will be able
to estimate this support soon by their
contracts with the Distributors.
Ptesident Davidson and Wilmer Sieg,
sales manager of the Distributors, will
visit between 15 and 20 points In West
ern and Southern Oregon and talk to
the growers.
Business men of Portland were vis
ited last week by officials. "We met
with the greatest encouragement," said
Mr. Davidson.
If a Distributors' office Is estab
lished in Portland the Hood River of
fice will be discontinued. Officials of
the central selling agency favor Port
land. "Portland is on the main lines of
travel," says Mr! Davidson, and all
fruit dealers who visit the Pacific Coast
pass through there. Frequently good
customers of Hood River would not be
able to meet Distributor Officials were
they located in Hood River, and the ad
vantage of communication and the
convenience of getting in touch with
main offices of all transportation com
panies, rail and steamer, are matters
of serious Importance."

NEW YORK, March 28. Asserting
that the Hudson, Harlem and East Riv
ersln, in this vicinity, are so polluted
by sewage that persons who bathe in
them are In danger of being infected
with typhoid germs, . Dr. S. S. Gold
water, Health Commissioner, announced
today that no permits to open private
bathing houses on the shores of the
three rivers will be issued during the
coming Summer.
He also announced that he would
recommend that all the public bathing
houses along the three rivers named
be discontinued.

Mann act, in which the "white slave
motive does not appear, was given
when James L. Bruff, superintendent
of the local Bureau of Investigation of
the United States Department of Jus
tlce, declined to take action against
F. C Maston, of Long Island City, N. Y.
Alaston was arrested yesterday on
complaint of a 26-year-old stenog
rapher, who said that Maston took her
with him to Kansas City and kept her
there four days.
"I have taken no action, inasmuch as
there is no element of commercialism
evident In the case," said Mr. Bruff to
day. Municipal Judge TJhlir issued a war
rant for abduction against Maston.

A storm of decided character is approach
ing this district from the ocean and warn
ings were ordered displayed at all seacoast
stations and on Inland navigable waters in
Oregon and Washington at 6 P. M. A large
high-pressure area overlies the Northern
States east of the Rocky Mountains and a
disturbance of moderate energy is develop
ing over the Texac Pan-Handle. Light rain
has fallen in Western Washington, Oregon,
Southern Idaho, California. Utah and In the
lower Missouri and Middle Mississippi val
leys. It is -warmer In the North Pacific
and Northern Rocky Mountain States and
decidedly warmer In the Middle Atlantic and
New England States.
The conditions are favorable for rain In
this district Sunday with a south to south
west gale along the coast and moderately
