Mrs. Bert Marshall Denlson has cards out for large bridge parties to be given on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. One of the interesting engagements of the season is that of Miss Willow May Fields and James Welsh. The fair bride-elect is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Fields. She was educated in the schools of this city and finished at Belmont College, in Nash ville, Tenn. She later traveled exten sively abroad and has many friends who will be interested in her betrothal. Mr. Welsh is a member of the Mult nomah Club and is popular among a wide circle of friends. He came from Spokane several months ago. The mar riage of the young couple will take place November 25 at the bride s home. The news of the engagement ' was made, known last Tuesday at an elab orate tea given by Mrs. Fields at the family home, 475 Pacific street. Mrs. Frederick Gulick and Mrs. Roy Nelson, two recent brides, shared the honors of the day. Pink roses, intermingled with maiden hair fern, adorned the tea table and the rooms were gay with a festooning of pink satin ribbons and hearts. Masses of Oregon grape formed an attractive wall decoration'. Excellent music and several' special selection by Miss Bernice Ruppe and Miss Fay Bartholomew added to the pleasure of the many guests who called during the afternoon. Presiding in the dining-room were Mrs. Esther Jobes, Mrs. E. J. Hall, Mrs. William Wehrung and Mrs. J. L. Ster rett. They were assisted by Miss Helen Hall, Miss Helen Pierce, Miss Genevieve Matteson and Miss Marie Gingrick. As sisting the hostesses in the drawing room were Mrs. Frederick Vrooman, Miss Sallie Sterrett and Miss Lida Rum. baugh. Miss Janice Smith and Vivian Werschul opened the door for the guests. Mrs. Fields wore a handsome gown of white crepe meteor, elaborated with duchess lace. Miss Fields was admired in a' charm ing gown of marquisette over pink charmeuse, trimmed, with filmy lace; she carried an arm bouquet of Rich mond roses. Mrs. Gulick and Mrs. Nelson wore their wedding gowns of soft ivory toned, shimmering satins and laces. Irons, of Fort Doug, las, Utah, in command of the Twentieth infantry, is also in command of the Seventh brigade, since the retirement of Brigadier-General Ralph W. Hoyt. Who 4s to be sent here to succeed Gen eral Hoyt has not yet been learned. Major Adrian S. Fleming, Captain El mer W. Clark and Lieutenant F. V. Schneider, who went on a hunting trip in Skamania County, returned Tuesday, having been driven out by a fall of more than one foot of snow. They did not get a chance to fire a shot, though they were out more than a week. A log cabin served as a shelter six nights, but the trip was a hardship and any thing but pleasant. Mrs. Edgar A. Fry, wife of Captain Fry, on Wednesday delightfully enter tained at an Informal sewing party for a. few friends. Her guests .were Mrs. j George C. Rockwell, Mrs. James Osse waarde, Mrs. J. F. Morrison, Mrs. Her bert C. Gibner and Mrs. G. S. Young. Appetizing refreshments were served. Mrs. Robert T. Phinney and Mrs. W. W. Taylor will leave Tuesday for Fort Leavenworth. Mrs. Taylor will join her husband. Captain Taylor, there, and Mrs. Phinney will visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Nalll, in Oklahoma be fore going to Iowa City to join her husband. Lieutenant Phinney, who is detailed as instructor of military sci ence and tactics at the Iowa State Uni versity. Miss Brambila will give a party Mon day in honor of her sister. Miss W. Brambila, who is visiting her and her brother. Captain Robert M. Brambila, post quartermaster. Major Samuel E. Smiley, of the Twenty-first infantry, is to be sent to the Philippines, sailing from San Francisco on the Government transport about December 6. Captain Ralph H. Van Doman left Wednesday on a month's leave of ab sence, during which time he will- visit his old home in Ohio. His company will be commanded by Lieutenant Weeks during his absence. Captain John H. Page, Jr., and his bride are expected to arrive within the next week. Captain Page has been absent from the post several months, going East to shoot in the competition held at Fort Niagara, N. T. Later he was on duty at Camp Perry during the Miss Elizabeth Grady, sister of Mrs. John U. Richardson, who has made an extended visit in the post, will depart Tuesday for her home in Philadelphia. She is to be married to Lieutenant Gill, of the Twenty-first' Infantry, in the Spring. EVEXTS OF THE WEEK. One of the most Important events of the week was the grand ball given on Thursday evening by the members of Al Kader Temple at the Masonic Tern pie. An interesting feature was the Arab Patrol. Beside the ballroom there- were the card tables, which at traded many of the guests. The hospitality for which the or ganization is famed was extended to several hundred Masons, their wives and friends. Many handsome gowns were noticed. the assemblage of guests presenting a brilliant spectacle. Mrs. Edward L. Pettis was gowned in pink crepe meteor trimmed with pearls. Mrs. H. L. Stevens' wore black lace over charmeuse. Mrs. Robert Skeen was attired In capper colored charmeuse with span gled net overdress. Mrs. H. Cole, which was held at the pretty new bungalow home of the couple at S66 East Sixty second street. North, Rose City Park, on Thursday evening. The new bungalow was decorated gaily with masses and bowers of Oregon grape, and a profusion of dahlias, and, following the ceremony, a reception was held, at which a large number of friends extended con gratulations and felicitations, and. enjoyed refreshments informally served. Miss Lillian Miller, of Chicago, was bridesmaid, and Ray Gill, of Portland,- acted as best man. The bride was gowned in a dalhty lin gerie frock, with a handsome lace veil and orange blossoms, and the maid of honor wore an effective gown of white crepe. Following the wedding, the happy pair left for a wedding trip to the Puget Sound cities. They will be at home to their friends after November 1 at their new Rose City Park home.
