THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, OCTOBER 5, 1913. THE MORGAN BUILD INGBA R'-BER SHOP 4 Ik ' O. S. MURPHY The Morgan Building Barber Shop is to be furnished and run by the Murphy Bros., two of the most popular young business men and most successful barbers in Port land, O. S. Murphy being with the well-known Imperial Barber Shop for eight years and C. C. Murphy with the good old Failing Bldg. Barber Shop for the past six yrfars. All the barber furniture was in stalled by the Portland Cutlery & Barber Supply Co. The Barber Chairs are specially designed by Engene Berninghaus, Cincinnati, Ohio, for Murphy Bros., being the latest hydraulic chairs, white en ameled, upholstered with green Turkish leather and automatic head-rest cushion. giving a very attractive appear- Paul Steinmetz, manager of the ance Portland Cutlery & Barber Sup- This is to be the finest-appointed ply Co., one of the largest and shop in the United States; abso most enterprising cutlery and bar- lutely antiseptic in every respect, ber supply houses on the Pacific Every chair is a fully equipped Coast, was the successful salesman Barber Shop in itself, and has to secure this much-coveted order, many advantages over others to consisting of sixteen barber chairs, make it easy and handy to work in This was the largest individual an antiseptic manner. After the towels come from the laundry they are thoroughly sterilized before using, and after each tool and brush is used it, too, is thoroughly sterilized before using again. The shop also has its own vacuum-cleaning plant, being one of the largest in Port land. Every chair has its vacuum cleaner. The desire of Messrs. Murphy to have their patrons leave the shop bearing a well-groomed appearance has caused the installation of a fea ture entirely new to the Pacific Coast, in that a system of cleaning by air has been added to the many up-to-date sanitary apparrati used. The porter will . no longer pound yon on the back with the time-worn, unsanitary whisk broom, agitating and putting dust and dirt in circulation throughout tha entire shop, but in stead will run a cleaning tool over your clothing, taking by suction all dust and dirt therefrom. It will make a last year's hat take on an appear ance of fresh newness, much desired by the average man. The clippings of hair, dust and dirt will be taken from the floor through the cleaning tool, hose and piping to the Tuee Cleaning Plant in the engine- room. Each chair, being a complete barber shop in itself, has its own cleaning connection, making it possi ble, if one so desires, to get what is known as a dry-air shampoo, remov ing all dust, dirt and loose dandruff and giving the scalp an invigorating sensatiqp. This system of cleaning is indorsed by the foremost authorities on sanitation and hygiene, and rec ommended, not only for large office structures, but for all residences and public places where dust becomes a menace. In addition to the above, each chair has the following handy accommoda tions : Telephone, hot and cold water, electric vibrator, compressed air. The lighting of this shop is given up by the most expert electricians to be the finest and best suited for the purpose of any they have come in contact with, being an indirect style installed by J. C. English Co. The manicure tables are big vitrio lite tables, with hot and cold running water and sterilizing attachment. The shoe shining department will also receive special attention, that its patrons may get first-class service. Then, to make this shop more com plete, we have installed two high frequency machines for the purpose of removing fungus growths of .the skin, such as moles, warts and surplus hair, etc., and also treat the face and scalp with a beneficial and pleasant treatment. This is something entirely new, but where it has been tried has proven most successful and satisfac tory. Recently 0. S. Murphy was in con versation with a number of friends and customers and was asked why he went to the trouble and expense of putting in a Barber Shop like this, when much less equipment would more than equal any other shop in town. Mr. Murphy replied: "We have just two reasons the first, we consider that the very best is none too good for the people of Portland and vicinity the second, I have put in a number of years in one of the best shops in Portland. At the same time, it has been my future dream to have one of the best shops in the United States. Meanwhile, I have talked with my friends and customers to ascertain if they would like to have a place of this kind, with the results that every single one would say, 'I would like to see some one live enough to put in a first-class Barber Shop in Portland.' And my brother, C. C. Murphy, has also spent a number of years in one of the oldest shops in Portland, where he came in contact with some of the best business men in the whole state, and he, likewise, has had the same experience, so we decided that the people in general are anxious for a first-class place, and we surely have it." We will throw our doors open for business Tuesday, Oct. 14, and Tues day evening, at 6 P. M., all business will be dispensed with, at which time the big formal opening will take place for ladies and gentlemen. Everybody is invited to come and make a general inspection. Good music and a pleas ant surprise awaits alL rpTLTTp T'TTXPr1 Stationary System of 1JJ U HjU Air (Vacuum) Clean ing used in this, the most up-to-date Barber Shop on the Coast, has been installed in the residences of H. T-aLOORINQ in tha halls of the Morgan X building: consists of terrazzo prob ably the most durable and one of the most attractive kinds of flooring in use today. Terraaso is composed of nothing mora than a mixture of cement and marble chips. It is used in many of the best buildings on the Pacific Coast as well as in the East. The marble chips consisting mostly of waste marble are thrown in a seeming careless manner onto a bed of soft cement which previously has been spread over the floor foundation. These chips then are pressed into the soft cement and another layer of cement spread over them. This mixture then is allowed to set and become reasonably firm. By this time the floor presents a ragged, lagged appearance with the sharp edges of the marble -protruding at almost every crazy angle. Then a huge "planer" consisting of a machine-operated wheel with a sur face like the hardest kind of emery, is run over the floor. The result Is the rough marble edges are cut down and the floor is made smooth and level as if cast in one solid piece. A polisher Is run over It and an ornate, durable floor Is produced. The marble pieces are cut oil by the "planer" at Irregular shapes and from Inconceivable patterns. By tinting the cement various effects in shades and colorings can be produced. The cement used in the Morgan building was of a bluish gray which blends beautifully with tne grayisn brown marble.
