Hood presents a beautiful and stately picture with its white peaks pierc ing the clouds and its graceful slopes pitching from the frigid heights to the maze of green forests below, but from close range it presents a. far different picture. Ruggedness predominates. The graceful slopes which loom up in the. picture as seen from Portland and vicinity, are transformed into ragged precipices, vast creviced glacier and ice fields and irregular ledges and hogbacks of jagged rock. The stately peaks are transformed into towering fields of ice and snow slashed here and there with canyons, slides and cliffs. An inspiring view is that which can be had on. any clear day at the base of the giant mountain. '. . , - v a - 1 - . ' ? - . " ' V - . , . - t K " . 5. oA- " - a ' - i , - '"v. . , , - - Ml mwm
