NO mid-Summer week for many sea
eons has, boasted so brilliant a
calendar of social events as the
one Just past. ' Luncheons, teas and din
ner dances have filled the days with an
unusual amount of gaiety. The visiting
debutantes and members of the young
er set home for the vacation days have
furnished motifs for many of the de
lightful occasions.
The trio of San .Francisco belles, Miss
Harriet Pomeroy, Miss Ruth Zeile and
Miss Beatrice Nickel,' have been the
Inspiration for many of the social
events of the week, and entertaining
has continued almost unceasingly in
their honor.
The Waverly Country Club has been
the scene of many of the week's fes
tivities. On Tuesday Miss Louise Burns
was hostess at a handsomely appointed
luncheon In honor of Miss Harriet
Pomeroy, Miss Ruth Zeile and Miss
Beatrice Nickel. Wednesday evening
Mrs. Samuel Mears entertained with a
delightful dance for the pleasure of
her daughter Margaret Mears, and Fri
day evening Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett
gave a charming, dance In honor of
her niece. Miss Helen Ladd. Miss Malsie
MacMaster's "The Dansant," which took
place Thursday at her country home,
Argour, was a pleasant Innovation in
the way of mid-Summer entertainment.
The wedding of Theodore Williams,
son of the late Judge Williams, and
Miss Clementine Cutler was a quiet but
notable event of the week.
The coming week will vie with the
one just past in the number of delight
ful affairs already planned. Cards have
been sent out by Mrs.. Thomas Scott
Brooke for a large tea to be given in
honor of her sister, Miss Harriet Pome,
roy. Mrs. Gordon Voorhles will enter
tain with-a dinner dance at the Golf
Club in honor of her daughters, and
Miss Helen Ladd has -asked a number
of the younger set to luncheon Wednes
day at which. Mts Ruth Teal and Miss
Calista Sto-ut ' will be the honored
guests.

Miss Frances Wilson left Thursday
for Tacoma to pass about 10 days with
Mrs. Hyde, sister of Antolne Labbe.

ed dinner in honor. of Mrs. Barbour, of
Vlotoria, B. C. Those present besides

Mr. and Mrs. E.. C. Shevlin. Mr. and
Mrs. Wesley Ladd, Mr. Henry Jones, of
Kansas City, and the host and hostess.

the smartest mid-week affairs. Around
the prettily-appointed table were seat

Ladd, Miss Claire Wilcox, Miss Esther

nesday evening, in honor of her daugh
ter, Margaret, was an extremely smart
event of the mid-week's festivities.
About 70 of the younger set motored
out to the Links and were received by
Mrs. Mears and Miss Margaret Mears
In the ballroom, tastefully decorated
for the occasion with pink rambler
roses and gay clusters of pink gladioli.
Miss Margaret Mears, who is one of
the most charming girls of the sub
debutante set, was gowned most at
tractively In an Imported frock of
white shadow lace over white silk, with
bunches of pink flowers adding a touch
of color here and there.
After the dance a delicious supper
was served in the dining-room, where
pink roses and gladioli again formed
the keynote of the decorations.
Miss Mears recently returned from
school at Dana Hall and is to pass her
vacation at her attractive home on
Flanders street.
The dance given by Mrs. Helen Ladd
Corbett. Friday evening, at the Waverly
Golf Club, complimenting her niece.
Miss Helen Ladd, was a brilliant affair
of the week. The guests, numbering
about 200 of the younger set, were re
ceived by Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett. Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Ladd Corbett and Miss
Helen Ladd in the ballroom. Miss
Ladd, who is a charming member of
the debutante set, looked unusually
stunning in an Imported gown of em
broidered batiste, with dainty touches
of pink roses. .
Preceding the dance Mrs. Henry Ladd
Corbett entertained, with a delightful
dinner in honor of her brother, Alfred
Hoyt.
Society was offered a delightful in
novation last Thursday afternoon when
Miss Malsie McMaster entertained with
"The Dansant" at her beautiful copn
try home, Argour.
The dansants (tea and dancing) which
have been the rage in European cities
during the last season, are rapidly
gaining In popularity in the Eastern
cities.
During tha afternoon- the . spacious
rooms of the MacMaster home were
thrown open for dancing and- later In
the afternoon refreshments were
served. In the dining-room, Mrs. Kirk
ham. Smith, Mrs. Arthur Sherman (Eve
lyn Wilson), Mrs. Thomas Scott Brooke
and Mrs. Laudon Mason presided at
the table. In the library Mrs. Peter
Kerr cut the ices.
Miss Anita Burns and her fiance,
Harry Davis, were the complimented
guests at a delightful dinner given
Wednesday- evening at the Waverly
Golf Club. The table was decorated
tastefully with Dorothy Perkins and
Cecil Breuner roses. About 28 guests
enjoyed Mrs. Shevlln's hospitality.
Mrs. W. O. Van Schuyver was hostess
Thursday afternoon at an elaborate
bridge party at her home on Lovejoy
street, where she entertained with
seven tables of bridge. Assisting Mrs.
Van Schuyver in receiving were Miss
Mantha Hoyt and Miss Alice Andrews,
whose engagement to Arnold Rockwell
has recently been announced. In the
dtnlng-room Mrs. J. J. Morrow and Miss
A. A. Morrison presided at the samo
vars, and Mrs. Adrian Fleming and
Mrs. Robert Lewis cut the ices. After
bridge a number of peopla dropped In
for tea.
Countess de Brlw (Mrs. Dougherty),
who is so pleasantly . remembered as
the house guest of Mrs. Wells Gilbert
last Spring, sailed last week from New
York for her home in Paris.
In honor of Mrs. Charles H. Martin,
wife of Colonel Martin, of the Third
Oregon Regiment, who is visiting in
Portland. - Mrs. David Andrew Shindler
asked a number of Mrs. Martin's for
mer acquaintances to an informal tea
on Thursday. Lovely flowers and
greens were used effectively in the
drawing-room and were tastefully
massed in the dining-room, where Mrs.
James D. Hart and Mrs. Joseph Nathan
Teal presided at the samovars and Mrs.
Frank. Watson and Mrs. Gordon Voor
hles served ices. Mrs. Zera F. Snow
and Mrs. Norman Lang were stationed
at the punch bowl.

An elaborate church wedding took
place last Wednesday evening, when
Theodore Goodrich Williams, son of the
late Judge Williams, and Miss Clemen
tine Cutler were married at St. James'
Lutheran Church, the Rev. J. Allen
Leas, pastor of the church, officiating.
The double ring service was used, both
rings having been cast from the heavy
wedding ring of the bride's father.

Avery, of Hood River, began singing "A
Perfect Day," which was followed by

in a gown of brocaded satin trimmed
with princess lace caught up with a
pearl buckle, which was used by her
mother S7 years ago and which has
been an heirloom in the family. The
bride also carried a shower bouquet
of bride's roses and white sweet peas.
Miss Koerber, the maid of honor, wore
a gown of yellow charmeuse and chif
fon and carried a shower bouquet of
sweet peas and yellow coreopsis. Miss
Olive Donnell and Miss Hazel Wight
man, of Vancouver, wore gowns of
embroidered crepe with yellow sashes
and carried shower bouquets of coreop
sis. A reception was held after the
ceremony at the home of the bride's
mother. 1008 Union avenue North, after
which Mr. and Mrs. Williams went at
once to their new home, just completed
at 962 East Ninth street North.
An engagement announcement of note
of the week was that of Miss Con
stance Gerrier, a charming society girl
of Centralla, Wash., and Robin A. Nel.
son, of Albany, Or. The news was
made known at an elaborate reception
given recently by Mrs. G. P. Gerrier.
Assisting the hostess were Mrs. Homer
A. Nelson and Miss i ranees Nelson,
who went to Centralla for the event.
Early In the week Mrs. Nelson and Miss
Nelson were guests In Portland and
were entertained by Mrs. Dom J. Zan

Miss Gerrier has manV friends in
Portland who will be Interested to hear
of her betrothal. She Is a graduate of
a fashionable Eastern finishing school
and has traveled extensively in bu
rope and the Orient.
Mr. Nelson is well known in bust
ness and club circles. He is a gradu
ate of the University of Oregon. The
date for the wedding has not yet been
set.

The announcement of the engagement
of C. Henri Labbe, the well-known at
torney, to Miss Laura Lytle, is of much
interest to. society. The wedding, which
will be a simple affair, owing to the
recent bereavement in the family of
Mr. Labbe, will take place In the apart
ments of Mr. and Mrs. Lytle at Alex
andra Court nest Wednesday, after
which the couple will leave on a brief
wedding trip. Mr. Labbe, who has been
French Consul for this section for some
years, has a wide circle of acquaint
ances in Portland. Miss Laura Lytle
Is a cousin of E. E. Lytle. and is a
graduate of the Good Samaritan Train
ing School for Nurses.

an informal dinner on Wednesday at
the Waverly Golf Club complimenting
their house guest, Mrs. E. V. Bodwell,
of Victoria. B. C. Covers were laid for
Mr. and Mrs. William MacMaster, Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph N. Teal. Captain and
Mrs. Gordon Voorhles, Hugh Hume and

One of tha events of the week was
the marriage of Louise Williams and
Harold a. Rayner, who were married
at the First Presbyterian Church, Wed
nesday evening. Before the ceremony
Miss Katherine Seely sang, "Believe
Me, If All Those Endearing Young
Charms," As the bridal party entered
the church to the strains of the wed
ding march, played by Edgar Coursen,
they presented a beautiful picture. The
bride entered on the arm of her uncle,
John H. Bridgeford. of Seattle,
and was attended by Miss Shirley Fiske,
bridesmaid and. Miss Marcla Parker,
maid - of - honor. Bennett Williams,
best man and Oliver Hutchlns, grooms
man. The ushers were Jay Coffee and
Bob Sethran.
The bride was gowned in Ivory char
meuse, trimmed with rare lace. Her
veil hung from a wreath of orange
blossoms and she carried a shower bou
quet of bride's roses and lilies of the
valley. The bridesmaid's gown was of
blue charmeuse with panel of French
embroidery. She carried a huge bou
quet of coral sweet peas. The maid-of-honor's
gown was of apricot charmeuse
with ovedrape of figured chiffon. After
the ceremony a reception was held at
the home of the . bride's mother to
which only relatives, the bridal party
and a few intimate friends were bidden.
Miss Maurine Campbell favored - the
guests with a delightful vocal solo, ac
companied by Miss Constance Piper.
The Misses Mabel Riggs, Doris Byford,
Grace Bingham, assisted Mrs. Williams
In receiving. After a short wedding
trip to the beach,- Mr. and. Mrs. Rayner

Miss Genevieve Halley, who is visit
ing in Boise, Idaho, and who was one
