All comrade are especially welcome. M. Morgan's Funeral Held. The fu neral of M. Morgan was conducted from his home In Lents by Rev. Mr. Solomon, of the Mormon Church. Mr. Morgan had been a resident of Lents for ten years. He was 52 years of age. A widow, a daughter and ' three sons survive him. Morgan was discovered unconscious Saturday evening last with a bullet hole In his forehead. He remained unconscious until death. LUCY ALTHA WILKES DEAD After" Illness or Three Months Plo neer of Oregon Passes Away. Lucy Altha Wilkes Ued May 20 at the home of her son, Amns Wilkes, at Winlock, Or., at the age. of 6S years after an illness of about three months. She was born in Warren County. Mis souri. September 30, 1843. She crossed the nlalns with her parents by ox team In 1847, her father. Orris Brown, being the captain of the train. They settled near Forest Grove. Or., where Lucy Brown was married to Samuel Wilkes in 180. They continued to live there until 1882. then moved to TlliamooK, remaining there until 1893, when they moved to Wheeler County, where she lived until her death. Her husband died May 3, 1S0S. at Winlock, Wheeler County. She was the granddaughter of Tabltha Brown, one of the founders or i-acinc university, Forest Grove. There were three sons born to her. two of whom survive her Amos C. of Winlock. and one adopted daughter, Mrs. Lulu Thompson, of Lyle. vvasn. That the retail business of Portland Is on the Increase is evidenced by th contract Just signed by Olds, Wortmas. & King for two more passenger ele vators of the Otis hydraulic plunger type, but with much larger cages than those now in use by the firm. These are considered the safest and smoothest running elevators known, though not in common use on account of their greater cost. Francis, of Albany, was elected grand treas urer of the Grand Encampment of the Oddfellows of Oregon In the convention at Medtord Tues day. It made the 11th consecutive time he waa chosen for this posi tion. His length of service es tablishes a new record In that position. Mr. Francis joined the order many yeara ago and has been prominent In Its work for years. He Is iow County Treasurer of Linn County, In which office he la serving his third consecutive term, and he also served a term as County Recorder. When his books for his first two terms were experted recently it was found that during that time he had handled $1,839,651.23 and made a mistake of only 6 cents In his accounts. The second annual river day excur sion for Reed College faculty and stu dents was held last Friday. The party left Portland at 7 A. M. on the Bailey Oatzert for Stevenson. After eating lunch In a grove Just west of Stevenson a number of track events were held. The crowd was di vided Into sIk groups, the captains be ing Dr. Griffin, Dr. Ewer, Mr. Wood, Donald Lancefleld, Milton Runyan and Elton Loucks. The 60-yard dash, was won by Brace, Loucks, second; Lance fleld, third; the 50-yard dash for girls, E Metcalf, first;' O. Klncald, second; E.' Launer, third; kangaroo race. Brace, first; Runyan, second; McCoy, third; stock race (girls). Metcalf, first; Lau ner, second: Read, third; crab race, Tom llnson, first; Lanoefield, second; Bacon, third. The three-legged race for men was won by Brace and Hauck; for the girls, by Vlda Fatland and Bessie Have ly. The shoe race was won by Rumana McManls. Dr. Griffin's team won first place with a. total of 17 points, Run yan's team, second, 1 points; Louck's team, third, 12 points. ' The entire party visited the two falls on Rock Creek, a mile above Stevenson. A short baseball game was played while waiting for the boat, which left Stevenson at o'clock. This Is the third occasion this year when the faculty and students have acted together for a single purpose. The first was campus day. when everyone turned out for a day of hard labor; the second was the Reed College conference, and the third Friday, for recreation.
