CITY'S PLANS GIGANTIC SEATTLE HAS $ 5,0 0H,O 00 POWER PLANT SCHEME. Olympic Mountains Will Be Har nessed - for Municipal Electric System 100 Miles Away. SEATTLE. Wash.. May 17. (Special.) Daring In Its magnitude is the plan to harness the Olympic Mountains to a $5,000,000 municipal electric power plant, as recommended by A. H. Dlm ock. City Engineer, and now before the"Clty CouncU for consideration. Acquisition of the. Lake Cushman site, offered. to the city by Joseph Wickstrom for $640,000, tho purchase of which was authorized by the voters In the city election of March, 112, would permit the municipality to en gage In the power business by whole sale. The total electrical power de liverable over transmission lines from this site Into Seattle would be 62.200 horsepower, and the total estimated cost of the installation, exclusive ot the Bite . purchase price, would be $5,063,000. or $81 a horsepower, based on total power deliverable from sub station in Seattle, or $58 a horsepower based on water-wheel capacity. Englfteer Dimock's report outlines the plan of development by the con struction of a dam 210 feet high and 300 feet long three miles below Lako Cushman across the Skokomlsh River, forming a lake eight miles long, in cluding the present Lake Cushman, the level of which would be raised approx imately 150 feet, making a water area of 5Vi square miles. A run-off of 650 cubic feet a second may be de pended upon, says Dtmock, the water shed contributing to this run-off cov ering 91 square miles. Two routes for transmitting this power to Seattle are proposed, one being 100 miles In length and the other 78 miles. The shorter route would be an overhead line running south to Union City, Allen and Burley, and bridging Puget Sound at the Narrows at Tacoma with a 6800-foot span. The other way would avoid this leap of more than a mile across salt water by going south around the head of Puget Sound, through Olympia and thence to Seattle. 28 TAKE "EXAMS"; 1 FAILS Eighth-Grade Graduates . of Hood River Are Announced.
