-TITE SUNDAY OREGOXIAX, PORTLAND, MAT 11, 1913. 20 HUDSON HAS PAST Man of Mystery Identified as ex-Convict. PICTURE FURNISHES CLEW Portrait Published In The Oregontao Recognlicd by Rockpile Guard as Prisoner Under His Care at IValla "Walla. After he had "stood off" tie whole machinery of the detective department for more than a month. H. M. Hudson, man of mystery, suspected of being a "marrying swindler" with a Nation wide field of activity, has had his past unveiled, through the publication In The Oregonian of his picture, taken by strategy after he had defeated the efforts of the police to tobtain a photo graph In the regular way. Chance notice of The Oregonlan's picture by a rockpile guard brought out the fact that the man is the same as Clarence C. Crandall. who served part of a sentence of one to 1 years In the Walla Walla Penitentiary on a charge of forgery. Prior to that, ac cording to the Walla Walla records, he served a term In San Quentln, Cal. Several AHaaes Vsed. Hudson, also known as K. M. Dunne. C H- Hudson and C E. Mason, was ar rested April S by Detectives Vaughn and Hyde, on report of a young woman who recognized him as the alleged rob ber of Mrs. L. Ikle. a Newberg woman, who lost diamonds valued at nearly J 10.000 -at a -hotel In New York. The officers had been seeking an opening to make the arrest for two weeks, when It developed by chance that Hud son was wearing Insignia of the Order of Elks without being a member. He was arrested on that charge and is now under indictment for It. . When his effects were searched a mass of women's finery and Jewelry was disclosed, which he has at all times refused to account for. Convinced that they had In custody a man with a record, the detectives set about tracing his past, but were foiled at every turn. Letters sent to women, from whom he had letters, were answered In a num ber of cases anl disclosed a shady hut not criminal history. When It was sought to obtain his photograph and i Bertlllon measurements, he showed ex-1 perlenced knowledge or his rights and refused to submit, as one who had not been convicted. Photographer Gets Results. In this emergency a photographer of The Oregonlan snapped the man of mystery as he emerged from the Courthouse. Hudson flew Into a tow ering rtage when he found he had been photographed. The xcture tnus ooiainea was pub lished arid the likeness was recognized on sight by a rockpile guard who had had custody of the man. while he was serving his term In Washington. This Information, obtained yesterday, has opened the way for a more thorough In vestlgatlon at Tacoma, where he was sentenced, and also In California. MRS. JANE A.
