cial.) On authentic ' information It is
stated here that the Chicago. Milwau
kee Et. Paul Railway definitely
decided to make Orays Harbor Its Pa
elfio Coast port of entry Instead of
Puget Sound, that radiating lines from
tr.e harbor will be built north Into the
Olympic reserve and south through
Wlllapa Harbor to ths Columbia Ulver
and that big- docks will bs bul!t at
Aberdeen to handle and ship freight
from the Orient, vhteh will be tfistrlbu
ted by rail from the Harbor to the
Sound, to Portland and to ths East.
This Information, received today by
private diapatch from a confidential
agent of the system, bears out In detail
the rumor to this effect eurrent two
weeks airo. when this stent with ethers
visited the Harbor and In an attempt to
aret possession of certain properties
was forced partially ts reveal the na
ture of his errand.

shops.
Dock facilities will also be found on
the south side of tha river. It Is stated.
A large tract of land Is said to have
have been secured.
An Important part of ths news Is
that the road will make Its extension
from Helstns; Junction to Wlllapa Hsr
bor a part of Its tins to Portland, tha
routs lending soms distance inland from
the coast between Wlllapa Bay and
the Columbia River. Whether a sur
vey of this routs bas been mads by the
Milwaukee It Is impossible to ascertain
here.

Today In reply to questions, those
who knew of the Milwaukee's Inten
tions said that ths visit of the rail
road men waa made in secret and that
while here they gave out directly Infor
mation that the Milwaukee had deter
mined to make Grays Harbor a termi
nal. The representatives, it ia Under
stood, cama with ths Intention of buy
Ins; land.
Houutara. it ia said, was ths point
whloh the Milwaukee officials bad real
ly decided upon, but ths property
which they will need wss not to be
had there advantageously. Plans are
said to entail early construction of
the Ions-expected Una into the Olym
pic Peninsula to connect with the road
started from Port Angeles to Osette
Lake some time ago.
One of the reports in connection with
the Milwaukee's rumored deal Is thst
ths railroad secured an option oa the
Anderson A Mlddleton mill site and
would use that as part of an extensive
dock acquirement on the Chehalls
River. Mr. Mlddleton and Edward
Anderson deny thst any option has
bsen taken on their property.

HOOD RIVER, Or, April 1J. (.Spe
cial.) During the past season, the
Hood River Apple Growers' Union haa
distributed 380 carloads of apples. Not
only bas the fruit been sent to all parts
of the United States, but to all of the
larger fore Inn countries.
The report of Manager Wllmer Slog
shows that Hood River spples have
entered 4S cities of the United States
and 14 states. Shipments have been
made to IS foreign countries. The num.
ber of consignees of apples in this
country has been SO. While the pear
crop does not amount to more than a
dosen carloads, shipments wsra made
to seven cities In flvs different states.
A large number of Newtown and
Spltxenbergs are still held In storage
here. Because of the tact that com
plete returns have not been received
on the apples sold and that large
amount of the longer-keeping varie
ties remain untold. Mr. 8!eg has been
unable to show the net returns for
different varieties for the season. How
ever, even though tire remainder of
ths crop were not sold, the returns
show thst the growers will receive a
profit above the cost of raising on ths
total amount pooled.

-ths Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce
toward the organization of a central
county body aimed chiefly to advance
agricultural Interests. It Is hoped to
get Government aid and financial
support from the county.
Acting on Information received from
Kaatern states where county organiza
tions for ths benefit of farming have
been tried, local men have so shaped
plans that by calling a general meet
ing with representation from granges
and commercial bodies the organization
can be completed.
A new stats law enables County
Commissioners to hire agricultural ex
perts at salaries of not to exceed 1100
a month. This law probably will bs
Invoked In Chehaiis County.

numerous brave acts performed by the

mouth of tha Columbia River and espe
cially In honor of tha service rendered
by tha crewa at the time of the wreck
of the tank steamer Rosecrans, tha
children of ths Astoria publlo schools
today presented each member of the
Point Adams and Cape Disappointment
llfe-savlnar crews with a handsomely
engraved medal. The presentation took
place at the Point Adams station mis
afternoon, the presentation epeeoh be
ing made by ilayor Oray, of this city,
while Captains Wtckluad and Rimer
responded for their respective crews.
The medals were paid for and de
signed by the children. Twenty-five
of the pupils submitted sketohes of de
signs and the on selected was a com
bination of those drawn by Adolph
Hekkala and Henry Seld, two grammar
school lads.

to the rescue. Surrounding the picture
Is a cable, while on either side are
thistle and lily branches, completing
tha design. On tha face of the medals
an Inscription is embossed as follows:

schools in this city and county, patrons
and directors, were present at the new
high school -building Friday for the
Teaohers' Institute, given under the su
pervision of Jay V. Flke. County Su
perintendent. He was assisted by O.
v. Dale and Albert iCrohn, Professor
De Garls Reeves and Miss Florence
Snodgrass, secretary of the commit
tee. L. R. Alderman, soon to be superin
tendent of the city schools of Portland,
spoke on "Habit Building," while Pro
fessor E. O. Btsson, of Reed College.
Portland, delivered' a lecture on "The
School and the Community."
Professor C W. Bhumway, superin
tendent of the Vancouver city schools
for the past It years, read an excellent
paper, "The Teacher's Problem," while
Professor P. Hough, who has been con.
neoted with the schools In this oounty
for more than 80 years, put In a "Plea
for the Pupil." Miss Anna McDonough
delivered a paper on 'Teaching Phone
tics In Primary Reading," with dlsous
slon led by Miss Carrie Scott T. M.
Kolfe and Miss Rose Eberle, who have
started servicer hot lunches for tha pu
pils at the noon hour, told of the plan
they have followed successfully.
CRATER LAKE RATES MADE

(Special.) Summer excursion rates
have been named for Crater Lake and
Pelican Bay Lodge, from San Francisco
and return. To Crater Lake, the round
trip rate is 137.00 with the choice of
the route via Chlloquln and thence by
auto stage to the Crater, or stopping
over at Klamath Falls, thence by boat
on Vpper Klamath Lake to Pelican Bay
Lodge, thence by auto stage to the
Crater.
The tickets will be good going by
one route and returning by the other, at
the option of the holder. The round
trip rate to Pelican Bay Lodge, will be
J 2 1.90 and will be taken by those who
have been to the Crater and have not
time to make the more extended trip.
These rates Include bus service be
tween the depot at Klamath Falls and
the hotels and between the hotels at
that place and the boat landing.

Friday night, when the people of the
town and the surrounding country as
sembled In tha new High School build
ing and enjoyed the conoart of the 21
musicians. In the organisation are sev
eral skilled cornet players, and with
the leadership of John Orr. of this city,
the town promises to put out a band
among the best In Polk County.

(Special.) When the band leading
the parnde Of the Indoor circus given
this afternoon and evening at the
Washington State 6chool for the Dear,
there was a scaring of horses, a gath
ering of people, ana wherever the
band passed, business was suspended.
Clerks went lo the street and the gins
In laundries and candy - kitchens, li:
their aprons, watched the strange ar
ray file past.
The band was led by a big drum
major, of Imposing and' fantastic ap
pearance, and two drums added to the
nuibtr, out as lue players uiemniTea
could not hear the noise they were
making, they could hot keep in step
together. But the parade was ef
fective in calling attention to the first
indoor circus ever given in America
by deaf mutes, without assistance.
There were two performances and
about tlOO was realized which goes into
the athletic funds to buy suits and gym
naslum paraphernalia. About 25 mutes
came from Portland and surrounding
cities to be present at the night per
formance.
Stnnt Is Sensation.
The most spectacular stunt perhaps,
was the "slide for life" of an actor
hanging to a strap by his teeth and
flying through the air for 100 feet,
holding in each hand a sizzling, burn
ing bunch of fireworks.
'The wrestling bout between J. Vt.
Meagher and a real, live, black bear,
more than a rear old, was startling
and called for great applause. The bout
waa held In a wire cage, and the bear
was muzzled. Three little girls, as
darling dancing1 dolls, were graceful In
their movements and were encored sev
eral times.
But the clowns! They performed
more silent humor than could be told
In a book. They were everywhere, and
no two were alike. The original "Mutt
and Jeff" pleased the children as much
as any number and while all was in
tent on a football game they were
"playing',' the "great mystery" was re
vealed. A stuffed man dropped sud
denly from the ceiling with a big
thump and the audience gave a gasp.
Women shrieked, believing that one of
the performers had dropped from the
tight wire.
Elephant Cansea Sport,
And that elephant about the size of a
4-year-old one was the only "live" ani
mal, but he was a good one and made
mirth by frightening spectators In the
circus seats.
The Texas Tommie Tumbling Troupe,
In tantalizing, terrifying twists and
twirls and tumbles, seemed tireless,
and performed feats that would do
credit to professionals.
All of the costumes were made by
the pupils, the apparatus used was of
their own manufacture, and they were
not Ih any way assisted by 'hearing'
people. And all of the work was done
outside of the regular school hours,
until Thursday evening, when a per
formance was given after supper for
the benefit of the children of the School,
all of whom were admitted free.

Albany and Linn County fur
nish some of the Interesting his
tory of Oregon development. The land
on which the city now stands Was taken
up by Abher Hackleman, an Iowa im
migrant. In 1845, his home being a log
Cabin which afterwards contained the
first store. In 1849 the town was de
serted because of the discovery of gold
in California and a consequent exodus
of all inhabitants, in 1890 It began to
gain In population and was dignified
by the construction of a schoolhouse
and two churches, the Methodists put
ting up the first building. In 1852 the
first steamboat came up the Willamette
River and landed at Albany. The ves
sel had been brought around the Horn
on the deck of a eea-golng ship.
In 1870 Albany had its first big fight
to secure recognition. When the city
was compelled to put up $50,000 in Order
to Induce a railroad to change Its sur
vey end plaoe a depot in the town. To.
day Albany has four railroads over
which 40 passenger trains pass every
24 hours and will soon add the Port
land. Eugene & Eastern to her collec
tion, with a largely Increased passen
ger and freight Bervice.
In 1850 Albany had one sawmill. At

BUENA VISTA, Or., April 12. (Spe
cial) A company of surveyors for the
Silets Valley & Eastern Railway Com
pany, which was Incorporated at Salem
several months ago, has set up a camp
on the Lucklamute River, about five
miles west of this place, and is finding
a route from Independence to the Slletz
Valley, where the company owns largt
timber interests. A right of way has
been secured for most of the distance,
it is said, and the people of Independ
ence think the road will be built dur
ing the coming Bummer.
Mitchell and Cobb, ot Chicago, and
Messrs. Belcher, of Portland, believed to
be financing' the new project, own stock
in the Falls City Lumber Company.
This idea leads to the belief that a large
mill will be erected In Independence
soon. The arrival and establishment
of the surveyors' camp has been the
first step taken since the purchase of
the land.
