sheets of cardboard. Who was
St Valentine, anyway? Some
benevolent old chap, we are
sure, to get a day of roses and
cardboard Cupids dedicated to
himself.
At any rate, we've been get
ting ready for him. Monday
morning, with brilliant red
hearts blazing upon every post
and pillar, we shall be ready
to usher in Valentine week
Cupids and all !

Madame Bernhardt the
wonderful French woman.
whose genius, caprices and
perennial youth have kept the
world agog for so many years,
visited our store Saturday
morning.
It is not that Madame shops ;
but Saturday, apparently un
attended by any one except her
maid, she walked in the big
Fifth-street entrance and stood
among us. She was sprightly,
gracious and as young as
ever.
"V oila," she cried, "what a
beautiful establishment! Ah,
it is like my dear Paris yes,"
she continued with a mischiev
qus smile, "I have shopped here
every day this Week, ond no one
knows me. I speak English
yes and they do not know that
it is I."
We were surprised to hear .
it Everyone remembered the
bright, interested woman with
the "English speech," but none
of the, clerks had recognized
Madame Bernhardt Madame
was pleased, and so were we
to find her so refreshing, so
frank, and above all, so young.
She visited the various de
partments, made some pur
chases of perfume at the Drug
Counter and stopped to examine
the articles on the Jewelry
counters on her way out.
" shall always come to this
store," she told us in parting.
"I love Portland. Yes, it is
lovely." And amid a volley
of "Adieus" she rode awav.

These new Nemo corsets, with their Lastikops bandlets, are
indorsed by physicians all over the country. They are par
ticularly suitable for the stout figure, and while being of an.
extreme length -are made to bend with the figure. "The broad
gores of elastic, which extend far below the back steels, are
laced clear down to the end. The self reduso strap in the front
reduces the abdomen and curves with the figure.
