BAYOCEAX EXTERTAIXS FORTY
To Deep Sea, Craft Takes Party
From Various Beach Resorts.
BAYOCEAN. Or.. July 20. (Special.)
The most attractive event of the
week was the trip last Sunday morn
ing to the deep sea by a large party
of guests on the Bayocean. Nearly 40
tooic advantage of the faultness
weather to see something of the broad
Pacific under pleasant circumstances.
Start was made from the Bayocean
dock at 9:30 o'clock and stops were
made during the trip up the bay at
Bay City and Garibaldi, where addi
tional guests joined the excursion.
The trip over the Tillamook bar was
unusually smooth and some amuse
ment was cause! by the announce
ment that the Instigator of the trip.
gentleman well acquainted with
ways of the sea, had gone below to lie
down. When questioned he denied any
suggestions of seasickness, but he
was not seen on deck until the yacht
returned to harbor.
The boat "lay to" off Seal Rocks,
about ten miles south of Bayocean
and a mile or more off the coast, while
numerous fishing lines were thrown.
Conditions were bad, however, 'and the
catch was small. A run of 20 miles
or more up the coast was then made
and the boat reached the dock at Bay
ocean again at a little after 1 o'clock.
Saturday evening was the occasion
of a brilliant social affair. In which
many of the prominent, society people
of Tillamook- took part. Most of the
guests came over on the little yacht
Henrietta 2d and returned to Tilla
mook the same night. A number ar
rived especially for the occasion from
Garibaldi and Bay City. Some of these
stayed over for the deep-sea excursion
the next morning and. to pass the
week-end.
Music was furnished by an - aug
mented orchestra under the direction
of Professor Arthur von Jessen. Dan
cing was the order, of the evening in
the pavilion.
Hiking" parties appear to be com
ing more and more popular as the
season advances. Several parties ' of
young women have passed through
Bayocean during the past week, hav
ing walked down the beach from Sea
side, around Neah-kah-nle Mountain,
crossed the bay to this place and gone
down the coast toward Xetarts.
George Hyland arrived Saturday
night and passed Sunday stretching
his legs 1n "hiking" about some of
the trails In the vicinity. He made the
trip to the lighthouse, a distance of
four miles, before breakfast.
L. V. Eberhardt, of Portland, who is
arranging a branch of his abstract
business in Tillamook, visited Bay
ocean during the week. Eberhardt is
an expert chot and intends to organ
ize a shooting club to hunt seallons
and seals during the Summer. These
animals destroy so many fish, he says,
that some means should be taken to
keep down the Increase as far as pos
sible. E. W. Logan, of Portland, arrived
here Sunday morning, having walked
from Nehalem to Tillamook and
crossed the bay on the Henrietta 2d.
Logan is a great booster for the Tilla
mook beaches and la coming back later
to pass his vacation here.
Among Sunday visitors to Bayocean
were E. F. Glnn, associate editor
of the Tillamook Headlight, with
a party of women. They formed only
one of the numerous picnic parties
which are becoming so popular here
this Summer.
Mrs. Elwood Wiles, her son ana Miss
Blanch Wiles, her sister, arrived dur
ing the week to pass the Summer at
morning for a trip to Portland and the

and Mrs. M. J. O'Donnell, Master Rob
ert O'Donnell, Miss Juell Reynolds.
Master Dick Van Dersal. B. E. Hugh-
son of Portland. H. L. King and Miss
M. F. Collamore. Games and other
entertainment kept the guests busy
until a late hour, a marathon along
the beach by some of the gentlemen,
being the event of the evening.
R. Allen and Mrs. Allen, of Portland,
passed the week-end here and were
among the guests on the deep sea trip
to Bayocean Sunday morning.
The customary trip to the caves un
der Cape Meares last Sunday morning,
was attended by a large party which
left early in the morning and enjoyed
the three-mile walk along the beach
in the bracing morning air. .The party!
was headed by O. H. Henry, a promi
nent business man of Spokane; Mr. and
Mrs. F. L. Robinson, of Spokane; H. L.
Chapln, of Portland; Stanley Chapin,
Mr. and Mrs. R. Allen.
A novel entertainment has recently
been devised here in a bonfire party.
A sucpession of huge fires is started
on the beach leading from the ocean to
the bluff and so arranged that the
rising tide sweeps them away in turn,
the guests wearing bathing suits and
moving from fire to fire as the tide
rises. This feature is proving popular
among the young people here, the new
moon adding pleasantly to tne romance
of the affairs.
L. N. Penfleld. of Portland, holds
first place among the "hikers" appar
ently, for he arrived at Bayocean on
his second visit from the south within
a week. He says he made the circuit
of the beach from Seaside to Netarts,
except for the crossing at the bays of
Tillamook and Nehalem and nas nego
tiated the trail around the Neah-kah-
nie Mountain, twice.
Mr. and Mrs. Horace D. Ramsdell. of
Portland, were guests here over the
week-end and have taken part In the
gayety of the resort with enthusiasm.
H. I Chapln, of Portland, has now
arranged to have his cottage. Just south
of the hotel, put Into condition for the
Summer.

among the prominent visitors here dur
ing tne past ween. Jir. ursves is

guests were present from the hotel and
cottages of the resort, A select pro
gramme was given by the orchestra, a
violin solo by Mr. Klein, a 'cello solo
by Mr. Brown and musical selections by
several of the guests. A numoer oi
