The exploits of Nevember 17. when the Italian Platano was murdered at Cha-telet-en-Brle. and that of January 3 of this year, when Moreau and his gov erness wer done to death, ar to be t down to his private account. Two days was Bonnot hidden In ths shabby-looking blue ahop of his friend Gousy, two days or rest, pnysicai ui mental. Bonnot felt himself secure in that little room abov the queer little ahop on the Rut de Paris at Petit Ivry. Newspapers were dally bringing him news of the sensation caused all over tbe world by his crimes. lie read col umns about himself In these sheets, and saw bl nam displayed in large typ over th whole width of the page. Tha bandit was enjoying hi relaxa tion. Suddenly like a coup de theater arranged by an expert dramatUt. all wa changed. Th peaceful llenc of th little house was broken by voices, gruff voices of command, timidly an swered by that of his friend and host, the shopkeeper Gousy. Tb book of philosophy which he was reading fell to the floor, and Bonnot's hand mechanically grips the butt of his rsvolver. No doubt Is possible dan ger! On all fours, moving noiselessly and swiftly, with th fellna movements that characterised him. Bonnot crawled to tha corner of tbe room where a sort of trap door permitted a ful view of th ahop below. Assistant Chief Joulu and three other men of the police wer talking excitedly to fSouxy. "Ther la nothing here." said Gouxv. "Ton can search upstslr. If you wish." Bonnot sprang to his feet, glanced round th room, a look of fear In his eye. Trapped T Tha hou was surely surrounded. Then at last steps sounded on tbe wooden staircase. Soma one. two per sons In fsct. were approaching calm ly, leisurely, without any attempt at secrecy. Bonnot wondered. "Ar they so very ur of catching me? Is some one else coming In by th window?" Baaaet Praaspt t Decide. Thar was no time to think. The door wae open. Ills Onger mechanically pulled the trigger. The report, deaf ening In th narrow wall of th room, waa echoed by a shout. A man was on him already. An epic fight began. Bon not, ferocious, like a beast at bay. try ing with all his might to free himself from th powerful clutch of Assistant Chief Jouln. Jouln. unarmed, holding on and straining very nerve to over power the bandit. For once Bonnot' pistol was silent. Tb arm that held th gun wa gripped by Jouln. and pointed to his opponent' chest, but. by the Irony of fate, this easy target wa Intercepted by Bo-nnof other arm, which In the struggle had been caught In deadly embrace and rested pressed tightly against Jouln's body. What shall he do? Here again th self-possession nd prompt decision of the bandit are thrown Into relief. One, perhaps two seconds of hesitation, then another loud report. Jouln falls, th bullet has reached hi heart, passing through Bonnot's arm to get there. Blood spurts from the latter's wound, dropping on the body of the hero detec tive. Quickly a handkerchief Is tight, ly bound round the lacerated arm! No time must be lost. Alresdy Bonnot' alert Intelligence has told him that th house Is not surrounded. Safely lie through th window, and from the window he Jumps onto another roof, and from there climb into a room of th next cottage. An old woman la there, startled by the sudden invasion of this man covered with blood, his features contorted by spasms of phy sical pain and fear. That gun Is up again. "Give me a couple of sheets," he says. "I want to get out from the win dow. Quick, or I'll fire!" "I fctrt no sheets." Is the reply. So with a last glance of contempt and hatred. Bonnot disappears through the window. Ills mind Is made up. He will trust to luck and Jump. At his heels policemen and civilians give chase. Which way has he gone? Where is Bonnot? Vanished as usual. The police are baffled once more. Hour pas. Miles up the road Is a small village, nothing more than a few houses three shops and a drug store. In th latter the chemist sits alone. He Is Intensely interested In reading tha accounts of the newest outrage of the bandit Bonnot. A man enters. "I want you to biud up my arm." says ho. It Is Indeed unusual an event for the village druggist. He Is inclined to chat and ask questions, but his custom er Is tactlturn. "I hurt myself. Whst business Is It of yours? Do your work Instead of talking." "How very curious," think the chemist. "Who Is this stranger?" lie raises his eye from the wound and meets for a second the cold, shifty glenco of Bonnot. Those tigerish eyes, the wounded arm. the abrupt manner Bonnot is recognized. Stout heart had the village druggist and an eye to business as welL Not a word, not a look, not the slightest tremor of the hand betrayed his emo tion as he proceeded to tend tbe wound. He must not let Bonnot see that h baa been recognised, and be must man ago to have him arrested. Betrayal by Chemist Thwarted. "I need more bandages." h ald. and stopping his work he retired Into the back of the shop. Then he darted by a back door Into the street- "Qulek. quick, police! Bonnot Is In my shop." he whispered to the first person ho met. Then h went back with some bottles and some bandagea Bonnot was still there waiting. Th chemist turned to him and found him self looking Into the rauzxle of a gun. "You have recognised mo and have given the alarm. I could kill you Ilk a dog at once, but I must have my arm attoudad to. Be sharp about It. for It I am caught here my first bullet will ba tor you." The chemist finished his work In dou ble quick time, spurred to celerity by the cold contact of a pistol's muxxle against his tempi.
