One of the predominating- figures of

In the world.

Highway, which extends from the Can
adian boundary at Blaine, te the Co
lumbia River at Vancouver, but much
permanent work has been done by the
various counties through which the
highway passes, and It is possible now
for teams and automobiles to travel
ever a road which. In many places. Is
the equal of any in the state and Is
In fairly (rood condition throughout.
Clarke County has given but little
attention to the Taclfic Highway
proper, but records in the offioe of
Mate Hlirhway Commissioner W. J.
Roberts show that Clark County. In
co-operation with Cowllts County, has
ronatrccted over the Lewis River a
bridge which forms' a connecting link
between the two counties. In addition
to assisting in building the L-rwts
River. bridge. Cowllts County has com
pleted the work on Carroll's Hill, elim
inating a bad stretch of road r re
ducing a heavy Incline to a 6 per cent
grade.
I'nder state aid. In Iewis County.
about three miles of hard-surface work
has been done on the highwsy. wnne
in Thurston County. In addition to
grading, graveling and Improving sev
eral miles of the highway, a new
bridge has been built across the Nls
oually River on the line between
Thumton and Pierce Counties. Ap
proaches to the bridge have been pro
vided by both counties. . Thurston
t'ountv now proposes to eliminate the
bad NIsqually hill by substituting a
straight, easy grade for the narrow,
winding road that now leads down to
the river on the way from Olympta to
Tacoma. The Nisqually hill In Pierce
County, has been Improved and. al
though the work Is not yet completed,
the road 1 In fair condition.
Pierre Klax Ceaatlea Baay.
On the Tacoma-Beattle section of the
highway. Pierce and King Counties
have built about 45 miles of good road,
about 11 snilea of which have not yet
been hard-surfaced. Upon the comple
tion of this, the work of Improving
streets leading out of the towns along
the route will be started. Auto drivers
claim that the worst stretches of high
way are usually found, for a mile or
two Just inside of th. city limit, of
the municipalities they pass.
Along the highway north from Se
attle. King County has don. some
hard-surface work, which I. reported
In fair condition. Snohomish Coun
ty Is perfecting plans to improve the
road leading from the King County
line to Everett, portiona of which
have been graded and graveled, and
other Improvement, are under way.
North of Everett, comparatively lit
tle Improvement baa been made, al
. though the contract for a new bridge
across the Ekagit River has been let.
On completion of this structure, located
at Mount Vernon, every large stream
between the Columbia River and the
International boundary line will ba
crossed by a substantial bridge.
Between Skagit and Whatcom Coun
ties the work around Chuckanut Moun
tain has been completed. This furr.lsh
es a good road from Belllnsham south
to the Skagit County line. North trom
Belllngham la a stretch of road, one
of the best in the .tate.
The route of the Pacific Highway
was outlined by the Legislature. It ex
tends from Blaine, by way of Belllng
ham. Everett. Seattle. Tacoms, Olym
pta and Chehalls to Vancouver. At
suitable points along the highway, sign
posts have been placed, so there Is no
danger of the tourist going aitray.
Inasmuch as the last Legislature failed
to appropriate $1,000,000. which was
set aside as rosd money. It is thought
that tUien the money is dlstrlbutei by
the next Legislature, the counties
through which the Pacific Highway
passes will expend a large portion of
U on this great highway. It Is to be
a part of the general system of roads
to run along the Coast, from Southern
Alaska through British Columbia.
Washington. Oregon. California and
Mexico.

Reports coming from country agents
Indicate that th. entire Northwest Is
destined to prove a rich field for auto
mobile dealers. Even at the .present
time, when roads in the country dis
tricts are not very good, the small
town agents ar. doing a record busi
ness. "Crop conditions and th. general
prosperous air noted In the country
towns of Oregon. Washington and Ida
ho indicate that th. present rate of
country sales will continue through
the Summer." said F. W. Vogler. Reo
and Apperson agent for the North
went, in discussing this question.
"Dealers relying on volumn of sales
for their legitimate profit will find a
welcome help from the small town
distributors. Th. country agents, are
filled with enthusiasm over th. out
look and there are few who ar. not
figuring on doubling their sales of
last year.
"On. thing that can be plainly
noticed Is th. open attitude they as
sume on the good roads bills now In
the process of initiation. These bills,
providing for state aid In building and
maintaining roads, with a state high
way commission and a state highway
engineer to see that th. work will b.
don. systematically, are being re
ceived with open arms by the country
automobil. men. No on. realizes bet
ter than they that If the measures
are passed, they will have better roads.
This will help to Increase their sales.
"Great help will be given the bill,
by these men because they are In
close touch with a large per cent of
the farmer vote, the only interest
which seems to be allied against them.
They will do all In their power to show
the farmers where they are making
a serious mistake In fighting th. bills,
and . their Influence undoubtedly will
be marked.
"Business men and prosperous farm
ers of the country are taking to th.
automobile rapidly. No better evi
dence of this fact could be given than
the large number of automobiles be
ing shipped every week from Port
land and Seattle to tka smaller towns.
"Country sales of Reo and Apperson
cars will be fully three times greater
than last year. Indications are that
this per cent, of Increase will . con
tinue Indefinitely."
Krlt President Visits Crowe.
H. A. Moore, president of the Krlt
Motorcar Company, on a trip around
the country, visited th. Oregon Krtt
distributer. L. E. Crowe, last week. Al
though a member of the conservative
class of automobile manufacturers, Mr.
Moor, takes a decidedly optlmlatlo
view of th. future of the motorcar
business and declares that the growth
of sales of small machines will con
tinue at the remarkable manner that
has obtained In the past two years.
Before returning to the East Mr. Moor,
will make a thorough Inspection of th.
Western field.
The new automobile hose wsgon or
dered, by Merldlsn, Miss., has been
placed in commission,
mortal day, with "Win" Barndollar
nominated to pilot It through the long
grind. Th. tntry was made by the
White Motor Car Company, of Indian
apolis. The latest entry to the half-thou-sand-RiIle
grind has a piston stroke of
4V4 inches and a cylinder bore of 64
Inches, giving a pistfm displacement
of 489 cubic Inches under the peculiar
White bonnet- With 114" Inches wheel
base and a clearance of but five inches,
the new speed car will be specially
built for a Stt-mlle brick track.
Although Barndollar has been a rao
Ing driver since 1806, he has intention
ally kept from the public eye because
of a desire to keep his professionalism
from his family. However, he has an
nounced his willingness to take bis
chance with the new speed car, and
comes out openly as Its pilot in the
Memorial day race. He has been suc
cessful In many road and track event,
and will prove a fit contender for the
other "speed monarchs" who have been
listed to send their cars through the
five-century route.
This entry makes the 15th to list In
the Nation's greatest automobile high
speed event- and from now until the
time of entry closing. May 1, there will
b. added starters which are certain
to bring the contest Into a class even
greater than the first EOO-mlle race.
