He was elected presiding elder in the
'Willamette Valley. When the split in
the Evangelical Association came. Mr.
Bowersox went with the United Evan
gelical branch, but Is. now an active
advocate for orgsnlc union of tba two
branches. He has received a warm
welcome back to tha church he has
served for Ova years.

Burning rubbish on a lot on Fourth
street, near Washington, caused
alarm of Ore to be turned In by Pa
trolman Wlllett, early yesterday, when
the flames began to lap tha fireproof
sides of the Couch bonding, adjoining
the lot. Tha Ore had been started by
workmen engaged In wrecking the old
shacks between the Couch building and
the Lyric Theater and had gained head
way. Believing that tha extreme beat
might damage the walls. Wlllett sent In
tha call and tha blaxa waa extinguished
in a few minutes.

number of artistic medals of American
manufacture. The walla of tha large
gallery are Oiled with large photo
graphs of paintings mostly by masters
of the 18th century, among them Sir

Alaska Service to Be Uroed. A
meeting will be held at 1 P. M. Wednes
day at the Chamber of Commerce, at
which members of the transportation
committee, shippers of Portland and
business men will prepare for a final
effort to secure the backing necessary
to assure the steamship service to
Alaska that has been promised by the
Dodge Company, contingent upon the
guarantee of 200 tons of freight out of
Portland. The steamer St. Helens,
which will touch at Portland May 15,
will carry out tha first cargo If It can
ba secured. A concerted effort will be
made in a canvass of tha dry to pledge
sufficient freight to make possible this
flrst trip and to make a beginning in
tha direction of regular and direct
sen-Ire between this city and tha
Alaskan ports.

Gkarhart Girrs Another Church.
Gearhart, on Clatsop Beach, la to have
another chnrch before the end of tha
year. Ground already has been broken
for a modest little Catholic church,
which will be erected by Father
Thompson, pastor of the Church of the
Madelalne. In Portland. It will be
completed and dedicated In a few
months. The dedioatory exercises will
be made tha ocraston of an excursion
from Portland, which will be conducted
under the auspices of the Knights of
Columbus. Father Thompson expects
to hold regular services a Gearhart
during the tourist season. The crowds
at tha popular resort have been in
creasing each year, so that a church
has been demanded.

Complying with a resolution passed
by tha City Council March 6. at the
request of Councilman Magulre, an In
vestigation of tha facts surrounding
tha Installation by the city of a water
system In Kings Belghts Addition has
been made by City Attorney Grant, who
reports that there was nothing Irregu
lar or illegal in tha transaction.
Tha facts ascertained by Mr. Grant
ara that tba city put In a force main
and a concrete reservoir of 100,000 gal
lons capacity at a cost of $21,650 and
that the Kings Heights Realty Syn
dicate Is paying a sum equal to per
cent a year on that amount. The pay
ments started November 1 and the com
pany has paid $433 for tha months of
November and December, . 1911, and
January and February, 1911. The money
was paid on March 8 last. i
Tha city charter stipulates that the I
Water Board shall not Install mains
until a guarantee has been received
that tbey will pay annually per cent '
on tha cost of construction. The com
pany, Mr. Grant reports, put np a bona
for $2000 to guarantee payments and
there is a provision In tha agreement
that tha bond Is to ba renewed an
nually. The agreement was entered mto on
October 20. 110. while Joseoh Simon
waa Mayor, and was approved by him i
