In response to the request of Rev. J. F. Ghormley, pastor of the Central Christian Church, who asked Police Chief Slover for a detail of JO police men at his church on the East Side, a squad of big pollcement appeared Fri day night at-the church where Frank M. Dixon, of Chlcaeio, was to deliver his lecture against socialism. In view of the near riot that had occurred at the meeting held by General Baden Powell and the probability that Mr. Dlxon'a remarks were to be directly op posed to Socialistic teachings. Mr. Ghormley called for the police protec- tion to forestall any attempt that might be made to break up the meeting at the Central Christian Church. The premonitions of Socialistic dem onstration failed, however, to mate rialize. The squad of policemen re mained at the entrance of the church until the audience was well under way and then were quietly relieved of duty and returned to the station without any representative of either the Social ists or the L W. "W. organization hav ing made an appearance. Mr. Dixon declared that the danger of the present day Is not In those who talk socialism on the street corners, but In those who unconsciously become Imbued with Its principles, which he denounced without qualification as rer rogressive and evil. He asserted that the tendency of capital toward forma tion of great monopolies to the detri ment of healthy competition is one of the potent socialistic tendencies of the age, In spite of the fact mat capital istic monopoly Is denounced by those who nrofess to be socialists. Noting the growth of tha Ideal of centralisation and monopoly in every phase of modern society, ha declared that the ultimate step would be consol Idatlon In one final monopoly of all by the Government, and that this will mean "Socialism; absolute, abject slav ery."
