"BEAUTIFUL SNOW" IS MISNOMER
SORROWFULLY SIGHS LYLE RANCHER
Wlea One Only Asks Enough for Sleighing and Nature Bestows 40 Inches of Snow, Her Generosity Is Deemed
Excessive, to Say the Least, Assert Residents of Washington Town.

If th nun that wrote "The Snow,
th Snow, the Beautiful Fnow,"
realljr Imadnea that snow la as beauti
ful a he aaya, there la more than one
tjrle rancher will be flmd to eet him to
work appreclatlnc fullr Ita roarreloua
beaaty. Th best way to come to a
thorough knowledice of the pulchritude
of enow la to ahovel It.
So. If the author of "The Snow, the
Fnow, the Beautiful Snow." or the man
or woman that said: "See the pretty
aaewflakes falilnr to the around. " or
any author of snow ballads. Trse) or
rhymes wants to mrt some practical ex
prlence about which to write, here Is
the opportunity.
aw Apoetlte Batlaflr.
Incidentally, If he comes to me. I will
arranr to s;le hlra work for a month.
If he will come here with hla transport
tat Ion paid, and money for his board
and loiijrlns; for a month. I would do
anything to encourage the true poet to
obtain a proper appreciation of enow
what It means and how It means It.
The trouble with snow Is that one
never knows Junt when he has had
enourh. Now. we like snow up here,
somewhat, but either we showed our
selrea too appreciative or the weather
man heard the prayers of those who
were alshlna for the "(rood old times.
For the anow came down In a manner
so utterly aattsfactory to the worst
anow sluttoo so to speak that his
appetite for flakes and the beautiful,
white, feathery, fairy, and so on. baa
been spoiled.
It be can to snow the last day of the
old year. Little 111 would not be out
don In a mere matter like anow. so he
It- us a arood seven Inches on hla
laauvurai day. This waa fine, and w
all went anow riding-.
Now. th trouble with seven inchea
la that It la Just a Inch or so too
ilfbt a snowfall to make food sleigh
ln or anowshoelna;. In reality, now
we know we should have kept quiet.
But on think of ail these thine ,
afterwards. We epok rljrht out in
meeting and aald we wanted more
snow we wanted to so alelgrhrldlns;.
Casrtloa I Exerrta4.
Well, w got what we asked and
then some more. We are afraid to
open up our moutha to even "cusa" the
anow. lest that might be considered an
insult by old Dam Nature, and she
send ua some more snow. So we shall
Just grin and bear It I men we ahall
Just bear it.
Tea. the snow cam down. It dropped
in amail flakes and in bio; ones, and
there were Ju-t all th alses you have
read about. When they were tired of
coming; down alng-ly they cum in
armies and battalions, anyway Just to
com down. Starting on the evening;
of January the fall continued until
the morning- of January 7. Having;
given ua 40 inchea on th level, and
iroodness only knows what In the
drifts. Dame Nature aat back and
amlled on a deed well done.
We did no smiling;, however not
with the temperature around sero. Nor
did we smile again January 8, when an
additional fall of about four Inchea
waa recorded. When any one talka
snow in future we ahall b in the list
that "never amlled ag-aln."
All newly-planted apple trees are
under snow. That's because an Ore
gon Agricultural School graduate told
us to head our shoots not more than
)0 Inches above the ground, and If we
get a crust on the snow before it
finally melts we shall not need to do
any pruning. Instead, we shall have
the slickest and cleanest Job of prun
ing that waa ever done in thla part of
the Northwest. The trees will be
pruned until "there ain't no trees."
Telegraph wire are nearly all down
and telephone wires that have not al
ready fallen ere considering the mat
ter; there ia about on train every two
daya: mall carriers take afcout two
days to make their round trip. So. all
In alL w are compelled to atop and
take stock.
There la a consoLatlon. however, I
auppose about next Augnst we shall be
sighing for some of thla anow, and,
anyway, the anow assures ua of a ban
ner apple crop.
But and thla la Important next
time we have aeven Inchea of anow I
think our people will not pray for
more Just so they can go sleighing.

EV YORK, Jan. 20. (Special.)
Felice Lyne, a little American girl
from Missouri, has created a
furore In the city which first acclaimed
Tetrazzlnl aa a great artist. London '
critics hall her as a "pearl beyond
price," and compare her with the great
eat sopranos of past generations. She
la a slender woman weighing only 98
pounds, and with a girlish demeanor
which Is unusual on the operatic stage.
She sang In New York tn light opera
last year, but created no sensation
there. After her London triumph, how
ever, she will undoubtedly be heard on
the American stage In more serious
work. She Is a daughter of Dr. Sanford
T. Lyne, now of Allenton, Pa.
see
Ola Humphreys wai an American
actress. She was reckoned very beauti
ful and she had many admirers. From
them she selected an Egyptian Prince,
Ibrahim Hassan, and married him. But
she was not happy with the titled Ori
ental, and recently she fled from his
home In Paris and went to London.
Now she has appeared In New York
with the announcement that she will
return to the stage. She Is still a
beautiful woman. She advises Ameri
can girls to marry American husbands.
Mrs. Martin W. Littleton, who was
Peggy O'Brien before she married, al
ways takes an active part In her hus
band's political campaigns. She stumped
for his election for Representative in
Congress and recently she substituted
tor him In making an address at Staten
Island. She Is fully posted on all the
important matters before Congress, and
is quite capable of addressing political
gatherings.
see
Lady Ashburton was formerly Frances
Belmont, of New York. She was on the
stage and appeared in the part of a
"slavey" in New York and Boston,
buortly afterwards her New York
friends were astonished to hear that
she had married Baron Ashburton. She
Is his second wife. The title will go
to the Issue of the first marriage, as
the present Lady Ashburton has no
children.

Mollle Lorraine has died suddenly in
New fork after a career which does
not bear out the popular luea of the
theatrical life. Miss Lorraine was a
member of the "Havana" company.
That company was noted for the beauty
and general attractiveness of Its young
women. One of them became Mrs.
Frank Gould and others achieved fame
in other directions.
Mollio Lorraine was the daughter of
a Scotch clergyman. She came here
five years ago and went on the stage.
She was only 20 years old then. But
the white lights of Broadway had no
attraction for Mollle. She was not
known in the lo' ster palaces, and her
few friends said that her life off the
stage was quite uneventful. She mar
ried Fred Simmons, an advertising
solicitor, and It in in his apartment
in Central Park, V est, that she was
found dead. The tragedy of her life
was disclosed by the Coroner's autopsy.
She bad died of acute alcoholism.
