Hors- and drivers shared in ths hardships brought about by slippery streets in the residence districts. In ths afternoon, when the storm reached Ita most severe point and a coat of lee formed on the streets not heavily traveled, traffic became Impossible and drivers were required to unhitch their horses and abandon their wagons. Much of the same trouble was experienced In the uptown districts. Dosens of loaded wagons were left standing at the curbs because of the Inability of the horses to draw them over tbe sllpy pery Ice. Many horses were Injured by falling on the streets. Notices were received at the cltjr Incinerator that eight horses had been killed In various parts of the city. Some of these were killed by falling wires ar.d trees and others were shot aftsr sustaining broken legs In falling on the Ice. Defective electric circulta on the Steel Brtdge caused the death ef two horses yester day morning and a temporary stoppage of travel over the bridge. The sleet broke the connection between ths bridge deck snd the draw span, so that when a peddler drove his hors up with one foot on the draw a charge of electricity shot through the animal's body and It dropped dead. A moment later a horse attached to a wagon of ths Pacific Vault Company met Its death In the same way. Condition of the dumb beasts was mads a special detail for policemen, by order from Chief Slover. yesterday. Tuta In Call to Reach Theater. It required the brain activity of the stage manacer of a Portland theater to break the snow blockade which stopped streetcar traffic between East and West Portland last night. Thomas B. Huffaker. stage director for the Orpheum, called an ambulance and was taken serosa the river in time to take charge r the performance at the big vaudeville theater before the curtain was sent up on the first act. Mr. Huffaker managed to reach his home at 321 Alnsworth avenue after the matinee and took dinner with his fam ily. Between dinner and T o'clock, when he should have started for the Orpheum again, he found the cars on his Una had stopped, and the varleus tax lea b eompanlea declared themselves unable to aid htm in reaoning m theater. Huffaker then went to a telephone and sent In an emergency call for an ambulance. The wagon was prompt in responding, considering the weather conditions, and on arrival the driver of ths big machine would scarcely be lieve that the Joke was on him. Mr. Huffaker was perched en- the front seat of the machine and ordered to assume the duty of rinsing the gong on the return trip. He was delivered at the theater, paid the charges for the service and sauntered' Into his office as If he had no knowledge of having accomplished what appeared to be the Impossible , STORM CREATES WORK CITY'S TJ7TEM PLOYED TO BE HIRED TO CLEAX STREETS. With two forces of CO men each, one working days and the other nights. Mr. Donaldson says he Is doing all that can be done In the wav of making the street walks pas aable. Twenty teams are kept busy hauling the slush and mud away. The number of men now at work cleaning the streets Is sufficient to hsndle the situation." said Superin tendent Donaldson last night. "As soon as the storm abate, however. I will ask that a larne gang of men be put to work. Extra teams also will have to be called Into service. "With the storm keeping up there Is little opportunity for the Street De partment to do noticeable work. Just as soon as ths slush Is cleared away It appears again. At present the men are trying to keep the street crossings clear In the residential sections. 'If the storm would stop we would have the city looking spick and span In a Jiffy."
