What comfort there la for us In tha fact that If wa can not da tha great things, wa may ba faithful In tba small things, it Is not ours to legislate for Israel, but wa may hold up the bands of Moses. Wa cannot originate tha mighty message, but wa can stand be side Tertlua. and being faithful In things that are subordinate. . we shall not mlea our reward. Trlflea Ara XeaalagruL As a scribe he teachea us tha value of actions wa call trifling. Ha bad almost finished tha epistle, when, bis heart warming towards those Chris tians In Roma, ha on bis own account slips in 11 words: "X. Tertlua. who write thla epistle, salue yon la tha Lord." It Is a trifling act. But the Roman throne has gone down; and Greek lit erature has become a thing of tha paat; and great dynasties have risen and de clined, and gone out of existence; but tba trifling act of a scribe who sent a salutation to the saint a of God la re corded In the Bible. Probably ware we wiser wa should know there are no trlflea. no unim portant actions. "There Is no great and no small to tha God who maketh IL" saya Emerson. And speaking after tha manner of man It Is certain, my peo ple, that every one of us during the last week said words, and did deeds, that will live till the sun grows cold. and tha stars grow old, and tha leavea of tha judgment book unfold. Tet we thought them but trifling word trifling deeds. "What revolutionised your life?" waa asked of a rough prisoner In a Jail. And the wisest among us- a few yeara ago aaid: !t-a the little rtrt within the lute That by and by wilt make the mmie mute. And ever-wldenlnc slowly silence all. Be careful of tha things you call trifles, and watch tha worda you think to be unimportant. For two mllleniums ago a man wrota down a aentenca and It waa a trifling thing to do, but there naa never been a Bible written with out a record of that man's act. Talua af Conduct Shows, And as a scribe he teaches us how Immortal la conduct. He cannot origi nate an epistle; he cannot receive from God the great message at first band; but when tha groat Paul, listening to the spirit of God, caught the clear notea of this wonderful book, and spoka them In the ears of thla man Tertius, he could write down the words. And wherever Paul'a epistle Is read, the name of Tertius shall be known. How Immortal la conduct! Said the novelist. "You sow an act. and you reap a habit; you sow a habit and you reap a character; you sow a character, and you reap a destiny." He might have gone on to say. "You sow a destiny, and you reap destinies." if No sMshtest deed will esd with yoa; It slope not there for sod or for III. But stretches throush ether worlds far en Till the boundless universe feels the thrill. Oh bow awful to say a wrong word, or do a wrong deed, and know the word and the deed are Immortal! I never think of Mr. Ingersoll without a heartache, as I remember how though he Is dead, young men In America to day ara reading hia booka and forget ting the God of their fathers. How ter rible! But to do a good deed and to have the consciousness that no grave can bury that deed; no aea can drown It; no lightning amlta it; but that It la eternal In its consequences! How sub lime! Do you know that last year they pub lished more of Mr. Spurgeon's sermons than In any year during his life? How j wonderful Is this fact of the Immor tality of conduct! When Stopford Brooks was writing the life of F. W. Robertson ha went down to Brighton to secure data for the book. He had heard of a grocer who had been a reg ular attendant on Robertson's ministry. Entering that store he said: "Could you tell me anything about Mr. Rob ertson?" Quite timidly the man said: 'No sir." "Well," said Mr. Brooks, "I am only seeking to find out something of your wonderful minister, and I hoped you could give me some information." He said: "Come this way air." And ha led Stopford Brooks Into a little of fice back of the store and aaid: "Do you aee that picture on tha wall? And there bung tha portrait of the great preacher, and that grocer said: . "Sir. whenever I am tempted to do a shady thing that may possibly be wrong I look at that picture, and then I don't do it." Oh tba power of a righteous life! Robertson had gone. Are wa sure? Robertson remained; tha Immortality of conduct! Scribe Sends Greetings. Now as Saint Tertius teaches us that all Christians are one. Poor Tertius! Olive Brelt- May there not have been times as Paul dictated that epistle to the Romans, that the brain of the scribe racked, and bla spirit disturbed; for it was no light task to follow the letter to the Rom ans. But Paul halted for a moment in the dictation, and then the Christian heart of Tertius, the scribe, began to beat high, and be thought of the people In Rome who would read that epistle, and so without a word to Paul, for the great man must not be disturbed in his meditation, Tertius writes down, "I sa lute you In the Lord." The union of believers. No two of us are alike, yet if at the close of this sermon we sing: Bleat be the tie that blnda Our hearts in Christian love. We should all be able to Join in the hymn. We are one! You remember how they led Polycarp out toward the arena where the lions were, and they said, "If you will forsake Christ you shall not die. You are an old man, and life should be sweet to you." And he said, "Eighty and six yeara have I served the Lord. He has given me no reason why I should forsake him, now my hair is gray." And we reach across the ages of Polycarp and salute him. We are one In the Lord. Do you remember the story of Blan- uma. tnat early Christian who was being tortured that she might reveal the hiding place of of her fellow Chris tians? "There Ib a fool at the end of my stick," said Judge Jeffreys, who slew so many of the aristocracy of God in trig-land, that they called him the "Bloody Judge." And the brave man at tne end of the stick said, "At which end, my-Lord?" And we are one with the humble Christian who could not be intimidated; one with all the natri archs. For Moses belongs to us; and r.nocn wno wanted with his God, until one day be went a step too far and never got back; and Abraham and Isaac, and Jacob are ours. All the Apostles; Feter and John, James and Andrew, and Phil lip and Jude. They are all ours. I saw a book once purporting to be tha genealogy of Queen Elizabeth, and it would be a good load for a wheel barrow But mine goes further back than that. For I trace my genealogy back to Abel, and I am one with all who kept step with God, and lived for the glory of the eternal. Portland folk being unfamiliar with the birds have kept the show officials busy an swering questions about them.
