The departments are In ' Immediate touch from the center counter. Child's Department lillmtlig On the west side la the children's department, which occupies one-third of the floor, where books appropriate for the use of children are placed. Here the ' furniture Is adapted to children of all aares, the lower tables and chairs being for the' use of the smaller children. For the present the children's department Is looked after by an assistant, but later It la Intended to have a children's librarian, who will devote her entire time to that work It Is thought that the services of the children's librarian will soon be re quired. One of the features of the children's department is the "home pictorial 11 brary," placed by itself on separata shelves. Here are gathered child's Illustrated books. These books, how ever, are not for circulation and are not marked as are the others, but are to show parents the kind of books to purchase for their children. Usually before holidays parents are Invited to Inspect these books so they will be able to make Intelligent selections. In vltatlons will be Issued to parents be fore Christmas to visit and Inspect these books. To not a few the child ren's department Is considered the most interesting feature of the branch. Reference Bowks Complete. At the east side of the receiving counter Is the general reading and reference department. In It will be found reference books covering prac tically every subject the student may want to Investigate, The books have been selected with a view to covering subjects or general Interest to students. It Is provided with suitable furnishings. Students who cannot find what they want In the reference books may secure books not kept upon ap plication. Adjoining the counter Is the clreulat Ing department In which books for general circulation are placed In shelves along tha walla at present. Later, when the demand increases, bookcases will be provided. The of fice of the librarian opens Into this department. Connecting; .wtth the department Is the private committee room for the use of committees or clubs which may desire to gather to Investigate or study any subject.- Book shelves are provided In this room. It Is not for the public. but for the special use of committees and lubs In the way mentioned. On the whole, the main room is beautiful and harmonious, lighted with toned electiio lights. Several pictures have been placed on the walla that are edu cational as well as artistic In the erection of the bulldlns a private room was provided for the attendants, where they can prepare their .luncheons in private. - Aadle1a la Base a rat. In the bssement 1 located the au ditorium, tha children's story room, rooms of the Janitor and tha fuel and ventilating room. Hera is" also tha work-room, where books are repaired. In this room Is a large colleatlon of pictures covertna; a wide range of sub jects, which are to be mounted for Il lustration uses. - The auditorium Is for the general use of the public. Miss Bailey an nounces that all organisations and clubs are welcome to use this room for lectures and other purposes of ben efit to the publlo and which are not for revenue. In short, the auditorium ts to be auxiliary to the llBrary and part of the plan to build up an educa tional center. According to present plana, tha first and third Thursday the auditorium will be occupied at night by the East Side Business Men's Club. The night of the first Monday of the month the hall will be oocupled by the United Im provement Clubs' Association. On Wednesday nights It will be occupied by the lectures In the Reed College ex tension course,, which began Wednes day by the lecture of W. T. Foster, president of the college. Several nights are open to other clubs which may want to use the hall. Applications for the use of the auditorium should be made to the librarian. A stereoptlcon lantern will be provided in the audi torium. There is no charge for the use of the hall. Every Friday afternoon there will be a story hour for children given by Miss Bailey or one of the assistants. Later, when a regular children's li brarian is engaged, she will give her tune to the story work. More Assistants Keeded. For the present Miss Bailey and two assistants have charge. Beginning with the first of the year, a school and ref erence librarian will be engaged, who will have charge of the reference de partment. She will have charge of the library of the Washington High School, but after S P. M. she will come to the branch and look after the reference department. While the library is com plete, arrangements are made lor a dally delivery from the main library building on the West Side at 1 I'. M. Books not in the branch, which are kept In the main building, can be had through this dally delivery from the main building. This dally delivery brings all the facilities of tbe main library within the Immediate reach .i-.d command of the patrons of the branoh. On Wednesday, when the -branch was opened to the public, 687 books were taken out. 516 children and 81 adults vlstted the library, besides 2S0 who at tended the lecture of President Fos ter in tbe evening. When first estab lished the Beet Portland branch was used mainly by tbe children, but con ditions have changed and the library ts now used by more adults than chil dren. The lower floor will contain store rooms and the upper story will be devoted to apart ments of two and three rooms. Each apartment will have private bath and all modern conveniences. The build ing will cost about 120.000. It la announced that other modern buildings will be erected In this dis trict In the early part of next year. Big Sawmill Plant to Rise. The Sllgh and Jordan furniture In terests of Grand Rapids, Mich, have purchased a site for a large sawmill plant at Klamath Falls. The site com prises 70 acres on the flat between Shippingtpn and the Pelican Bay Lum ber Company's plant. It Is said that the Michigan interests will erect one of the largest plants In the Northwest at Klamath Falls. . - Apartment-House About Ready. The three-story apartment-house at the northwest corner of Third and Hall streets, being built for J. S. Johnstone, will be completed In a few days. The building is 60x66 feet In size, and has a pressed! brick exterior. There are 24 two-room apartments. The building will be used exclusively for apartments. It is fitted up with modern improve ments. The cost of the structure is $20,000. Claussen & Claussen were the architects. Brick Bulldlns; for Sellwood. J. P. Zirnglebel will erect a two-story brick building: on East Thirteenth street . and Tacoma avenue. In Sellwood. It will be 62 by 75 feet in size and of heavy mill construction with pressed brick exterior, heavy galvanized Iron cornice and plate-glass fronts. The first floor will bemused for general business purposes and will contain four store rooms. The upper story will contain four apartments of five rooms each and four separate rooms. It will be modern and one of the best struc tures erected In the suburb this year.
