NEW YORK. Oct. 14 (SpeclaX)
Charles Battel! Loomla, the hu
morist, who recently died, will be
mourned by a large clrqle of friends,
some of whom had never met him. For
Mr. Loom'.a' writing's had a personal
note which was 'so evident .that many
of hla readers felt as though they knew
him. And among those wbo had met
htm. his friends were legion. Mr. Loo
mis' writings were In s great degree
an expression of hlmFelf. They mir
rored tha gentloneas. sweetness, high
sens, of honor, and sympathy of a lev
able nature. Few even of those who
knsw him. however, knew another side
of his character Its great courage and
Its extraordinary optimism. It was these
which sustained him during the period
of his last Illness, which extended from
December to September. '
In aplte of a succaaslon of operations
which constantly weakened him and at
times caused him great suffering, he
never grew Impatient nor lrfst hope.
His modesty was as genet as his other
merits and a word of appreciation gave
him -the greatest pleasure. In a letter
to a friend written during his last ill
ness, he referred to a series of "ser
mons" hehsd been writing for a mag
astne.' saying: "A woman In Joplln
wrote to the editor of "Smith's to say
that as she had read my sermons with
pleasure for a long time and had seen
In a paper that I was 111. she was writ
ing to say that she hoped I was better
and would live many years to write
sermons, as they had helped1 her over
many hard places. Wasn't that fine?
I wrote my sermon without any effort
after that."
During his last Illness, though able
to sit at his typewriter for only a lit
tle w hile each day, Mr. Xoomls kept at
his work and wrote three of his finest
stories.

HUMOR IS VITAL NEED
FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE
Dr. Madison C. Peters Draws Moral Prom Lincoln World's Best Workers
' Men of Wit Strain of Living Believed.
BY DR. MADISON C: PETERS.
HI'MOR Is the health and bloom of
life, the play of ltg spirits and
snarkle of Its happiness. It tem
pers anger. soothes Irritability and
knits up the ragged sleeve of care. It
relieves the strain of life, helpa u
over hard places and lets ua down easy
after a severe Jolt.
When things go wrong and you can
begin to frolic and make merry In
foraetfulness of all the conflict of life.
you have th. secret of health, happiness
and succesa Happy Is tne man wno
can forget all his misfortunes, think
only of the good times he has had and
answer the old question put to Sambo:
"How old are you?" by his reply. It
von reckon by the years, aah. raw 60,
but If you goes by the fun I'se had. I
guess I'se a hundred."
Wit is precious gut. especially
hen combined with wisdom and con
trolled by principle. Dr. Johnson used
to say it was worth 600 a year to any
man to see the bright side of things.
Humor Is not only tne golden gey
which unlocks all hearts, the magio
wand which charms away dullness and
melancholy, but the talisman which en
ables one to succeed where no other
quality would avail.
Beat Warm: era Witty.
Many of tha men who have dons the
world's best work were largely en
dowed with, wit and humor. The most
destructive logic that can be employed
against error. Is the loglo of wit.
Amongst all the humorists In America,
none had a keener sense of th. ludi
crous than Abraham Lincoln, a gift
which God placed In his hand to battle
for humanity.
Lincoln was often misjudged and re
proached for his seeming levity. On
tha morning of the battle of Fred-
erickeburg. Mr. Arnold called on tha
President and was shocked to find him
reading Artemus Ward's description of
bis visit to the Shakers.. Mr. Arnold
said: '
"Mr. President. Is It possible, thai
with th. whole land bowed In sorrow
and covered with a pall In the prea
nc. of yeaterdays fearful reverse,
you can Indulge In such levltyr'
Throwing down the book, the tears
streaming down his cheeks, and trem
bling with emotion, the President re
plied: -Mr. Arnold. If I could not get mo
mentary respite from th. crushing bur.
den I am constantly carrying, my heart
would break."
Uaveola -Never Happy.
Again Lincoln is reported to have
said after the dreadful repulse of Frea
erlcksburg: "If there Is man out of hell that
suffers more than I do, I pity him."
Do you Imagine that the great heart
of Abraham Lincoln ever found a mo
menta happiness In the White House?

"BEST GIRL" IS NOVELTY
English Weddings Change at Dic
tates of Fancy.
LONDON. Oct. 14. (SpeciaL) Grad
ually, fancy and ingenuity are adding
fresh features of intrest to the cast-
iron form of English weddings. The
first step in the direction of novelty
was taken some months ago, when a
bride went to the altar accompanied by
a best-girl, and on more than one oc
casion since this example has been
copied.
Matrons of honor, as well as brides
mains, are beginning to figure in Eng
lish weddings. This novel note was
struct the other day at the marriage
of Miss ijilda Hunter-Craig to Robert
de Courcy Wheeler. Three little flow
er girls strewed flowers before the
bridal pair, who were followed by no
fewer than 14 attendants.
Another novelty is one that will be of
real use to poor brides as well as rich.
Every girl who has gone through the
ordeal of changing her name in a pub
lic place of worship, remembers the dif
ficulty with which she got off her left
glove to receive the fateful ring. No
longer need this be an embarrassing
experience, for among the trousseau of
every well equipped bride there will be
in future a specially manufactured pair
of gloves so made that the bride can
slip her ring-finger out of the glove,
and then, after receiving the emblem of
marriage, she can easily replace her
finger in the unstitched glove.
No marriages of any social import
