The people of Hermiston and the Umatilla project are at a loss to un derstand Director F. H. Newell's rea son for giving- out Interviews, which appeared in the Portland papers, re garding; the Umatilla Government irri gation project Residents on the project, farmers Included, do not believe that prices of land are too high, and in no Instance has a sale been made where interest on a greater Investment cannot bo made. There are farmers here who are willing to make affadavit to hav ing sold $10 worth of potatoes to the acre this year at a cost of 40 per acre to put the crop on the market. This leaves $130 per acre net, or 10 per cent on $1300. Still others are ready to make affidavit to this year's netting from alfalfa hay 10 per cent, with their land figured at $S00 per acre. Gevurtz & Sons I j First, Second and Yamhill Streets g roiniimwmiiTOPnifimw iimosnnniBTOflnna 4 project was selling for $5 per acre years before the irrigation service was discussed. The land which this season gave the largest profits from potatoes and al falfa was raw land In sagebrush two years go. The experience of these men is but the experience of practically every farmer on the project. What is true of potatoes and alfalfa is equally true of all other produce grown on the project. A local land owner said: "As for prices of land tumbling, this Is consid ered ridiculous by project people. On the contrary, values are going up slowly but surely and in many recent sales $215, $225, $235 and in a few in stances $250 per acre was paid. Government Is Blamed, "While it is true that to a great ex tent the vacant lands here are in pri vate ownership, this fact is largely due to the Government Itself. These lands were taken up under the desert act be fore the irrigation project was begun. Final proof, however, had not been made. "When the Reclamation Service com menced work patents to the desert holdings were, and still are, held up. Under various rulings made, the Gov ernment will not issue title until the water right baa been paid. With con ditions in this shape the entryman finds it almost Impossible to cut up his large holdings into farm units of 20 and 40 acres. This condition will continue until former rulings are re versed or the required time has elapsed. Last Winter desert entrymen in this section sent a representative to Wash ington in an effort to secure relief, but he was unsuccessful. "Not only is an injustice done the landowner by thus tying up his hold ings indefinitely, but the owner of deeded land is bearing a burden which is an unnecessary hardship. These un patented lands are not taxable and the few acres In private ownership must pay all the county, school and state tax. which rightfully should be borne by all. People here refute the state ment of Inflated land values and place the blame for vacant lands on the shoulders of Government officials." Fels Single Tax Fund Folk Bnsy. uALEM, Or., Sept. 30.
