two weeks before the wedding waa to

The Carter-Hopwood romance, blasted
when Gatea appeared on the scene last
Winter, had Its Inception when th two
young people were students at Am
herst and Smith collegea.. respectively.
Both were members of the lilt classes
of those Institutions.
Immediately following graduation
last year Miss Hopwood visited for a
time with Carters In Brooklyn and New
Tork and late in the Summer came
home.
Society Caoe Breakdown.
During the rest of the year society

tain the bride-to-be of the New Tork
.millionaire's son. But society waa too
strenuous and In early Winter last year

There she met and became engaged to
Charles G. Gates, and It did not become
definitely known till this Spring that
the Minneapolis maid had turned down
young Carter.
During June this year young Gates
was a Minneapolis visitor, presumably
on financial matters In connection with
the house of Gates, but In fact to visit
his fiancee. Auto rides In seclusion
were the order of the day and night,
and when not thus engaged young Gates
glibly talked stocks and bonds, and the
financial market, but never breathed, a
word as to his future bride-to-be.
And Miss Hopwood was almost as
mum. though she did confide to her
very close friends, after Mr. Gates left
town, that she was "engsged to a Mr.
Gates." None for a moment thought
It was the future heir to the f40.000.000
Gates' estate.
Ten Year Difference In Age.
Miss Hopwood is 2 years old. Mr.
Gates Is 31.
According to Miss Hopwood's father,
the engagement took place early In the
Summer before Charles G. Gates waa
called to Parla by the Illness of his
father, and when he left. Mlsa Hop
wood and her parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Krank P. Hopwood. accompanied blm.
Mr. Hopwood haa returned but hla wire
and daughter are still In Paris.
Early in the year Mr. Gates separated
from hla former wife, who waa Miss
Mary W. Martin, of St. Louis. Trie,
divorce decree was signed a week ago.

John W. Gates was held today at the
Interdenominational American Church
In Kue de Brry. The service waa con

South, assisted by Dr. Hyatt, pastor of
the American Church, who waa a boy
hood playmate of Mr. Gates, but had
never met him In later life. .About 200
American friends and acquaintances of
the family from all parts of the I'nlted
States were present. The body will be
taken to Cherbourg Tuesday and placed
