Over 100 men are busy every day In
th week In Beaumont, a tract of 133
acres between East Thirty-seventh and
Eaat Forty-fifth street. In tha North
Eat Side. layltR sewers and water
mains, grading and paving the streets.
About 5 teams are used In the work.
The addition la divided Into upper and
lower sections. The old gravel hill, be
ing the dividing line, aerves to work
out a beautiful system of curved
drives. Wisteria avenue. Stanton
street.' Beaumont avenue and Alameda
avenue are the principal streets on the
curved portion connecting the lowr
with the upper portion of the addition.
Tha Beaumont streetcar line will
atart at tha Intersection of the Sandy
road and East Forty-second street and
enters Wisteria avenue two blocks
north of Stanton street. On Wisteria
th earlln winds westwsrd and turn
northward up the bill, where It crosses
Alameda drive and enters East Korty
flrst street for a distance of about 100
fet.

completed. F. M. Holler purchased two
lots for which ha paid $2000. Tho
northwest corner of Klickitat and
East Fortieth streets, 100 by 100 feet,
was sold to John Strelb for $200. J.
B. Edgar. H. C. Smith, and Guy Taylor
bought lota facing Stanton street for
$1ISS each. Thomas E. Armstead ha
aecured a lot on Beaumont Vtow ridga
containing 12.800 feet. The Swope Con
crete Product Company has purchased
four lots In the addition on which It
will erect four concrete bulldlnss. I.
P. Taylor and J. H. MaclKnsId bought
two lota for $1350 each. Sales were
made to men who will build homes at
once.
WORK BEGINS ON LIBRARY
East Side Structure to Be or Con

The concrete foundation of the new
East Sldo Library. which Is being
erected at the southeast corner of East
Eleventh and East Alder streets, has
been completed and -work has started
on the concrete superstructure. It will
be completed this Fall and occupied by
the end of the year. The cost of the
library will be $35,000. and will carry
about th same selection of books and
literature that may be found In tha
main building on the West Side. Two
other similar library buildings ara pro
jected for the East Side. '
Church Building Rises.
Waverlclgh Congregational Church I
completing a $.1000 church building at
the corner of East Thirty-third and
Ellsworth street. It will bo ready for
dedication next month. The new build
ing Is nearly a counterpart of tho for

That $22,000 an acre can be realized
from ginseng In the Rogue River Val
ley Is the statement of E. F. Graham,
of Prospect, who has been experiment
ing with the plant for years. On a
homestead of 10 acrea Mr. Graham be
gan his experiments and he now haa
one-eighth of an acre producing the
valuable plant.
Three-year-old glngseng roots hav
a market value of from $ to $8 a
pound and roots from 8 to 12 years old
will net as high as $20 a pound. After
three years of work attending to ona
eiglitli of an acre of the root, Mr. Gra
ham has received $3000 for the prod
uct of his area. The cost of starting
in the business Is very great and It Is
for this reason that no more land waa
set out. ,', .,
The ginseng root Is marketable
onlv In China, where the light yellow
root are used by the Chinese for every
conceivable domestic purpose. Speci
mens of peculiar shape demand, almost,
their weight in gold, because of their
aupposed occult powers. By replanting
the roots freaks are produced.
Government Investigation of th
plant discloses the fact that there 1
no species of Insect nor any fungua
growth that bothers the plant but there
Is a law to the effect that th plants
must be Inspected each year by a Gov
ernment Inspector. Professor P. J
Ogara. ex-Government pathologist and
now employed by the Jackaon County
Fruit Association, who has Just re
turned from Inspecting Mr. Grabam'a
place. Is Inclined to believe that thla
valley is one of the few places In th
world where ginseng may be success
fully raised.
