Vntll late last nitrht a portion oT the
force of the Willamette Iron & Steel
Works labored on the rehabilitation of
encln parts that were originally
turned out from the plant It Tears ago.
when It was known as the Willamette
Iron Worka. The contract was tn con
nection with the building of engines for
the speedy siernwheeler Telephone.
Tre new parts are for the steamer
Hailey (iatirrt. the port engine of
which irave way Monday and both
cylinder heads were blown out.
The pitman ends, which are con
nected with the piston, are the same
a were used on the steamer Telephone,
and while trey have given trouble dur
ing the past year. It was not decided
to replace th'm until the accident.
The pttmans were from the Telephone
also, but the wooden portions have been
renewed. The Telenhone's engines were
not used In the Gatzert. but she had
other parts at first and In a way she
has maintained the reputation of her
predecessor for speed.
Lut one part the Oatiert remains
and It Is the envy of nearly every
steamboat owner on the river the
whistle. Captain Cochran, who built
the Telephone and knows much about
the old steamer, haa said that many at
tempts were mad to duplicate the me
lodious whistle, and some were turned
out that promtKed to emit the same wel
come signal, but they have been poor
Imitations of the one now In service,
which has such a distinct tone that few
Fortlanders who have heard It ever
confuse It with the whistles of other
vessels.
By working last night, when the
castings wre on the lathes. It ts ex
pected that the completed parts will
be turned over to the crew of the Gat
aert today and they will work all of
tonight so as to have her ready for
service tomorrow morning. Today the
steamer Dalles City will carry the reg
ular excursion crowd to the Cascade
Locks.

Portland Automobile Club Aids
Pacific Highway Project in
the Local Section.
$500 PAID TO COWLITZ
State Senator Stewart, of Washing
ton, Holvea Chex-k to Help
County In Completing Car
rollton Mountain Pass.
Representing the people of Cowllta
County. Washington. F. L. Stewart,
State Senator and banker of Kelso,
yesterday received from the Portland
Automobile Club a check for 1500 In
payment pf the club's subscription to
ward the construction of a section of
the Pacific Highway.
That section of the highway recently
completed Is .what is known as the
Carrollton Mountain road, which la In
Cowllta County and borders the Co
lumbia River. Senator Stewart will re
main In Portland for a few days, while
the committee representing the Auto
mobile Club will solicit further sub
scriptions for the Improvement, which
represents an expenditure of approxi
mately $30,000.
"When the Washington Legislature
adjourned last March," said Senator
Stewart yesterday, "the State of Wash
ington and Cowlitz County had each
expended $13,000 In building this sec
tion of the Pacific Highway. Provision
lor sufficient additional funds to com
plete the Improvement was made In
the general highway appropriation bill
before the Legislature. At the last
minute, however, this measure waa de
feated. I Portland and Seattle Aid.
"We figured that about $10,000 would
be required to complete the work. This
wss more than Cowllta County cared
to assume alone. We were unable to get
more funds from the state, although
Governor Hay agreed to let us have
the use of 100 convicts If we would
pay for their maintenance. It was about
this time I visited Portland, when the
Automobile Club made an appropria
tion of $500 and appointed a commit
tee to raise by Individual subscrip
tion $1500.
"At the same time the Seattle Auto
mobile Club sent us a check for $500.
With this assistance guaranteed, the
Commissioners of Cowlltx County de
cided to proceed with the Improvement
and assume the cost. We now find,
however, that our original estimate of
$10,000 for finishing the work was low
and that aa a matter of fact the county
found it necessary to expend approxi
mately $4,000 to complete the rosd.
