Ostensibly for the purpose of attend ing commencement exercises, but In reality to confer with his principals on the question of alleged fraud and forgery in connection with the Uni versity of Oregon appropriation refer endum. ex-Justice Slater left for Eu gene tonight. This means that definite action will probably be taken in a short time, as Mr. Slater believes that a conclusion will be reached In Eugene during the next day or two as to just what course will be pursued to save the appropria tion for the university. Slater leaves with much more in formation than has been given to the public. In many instances much addi tional, and still more, conclusive evi dence as to alleged fraud has been found, but he refuses to divulge the na ture of this. It is known, however, that, absolute fraud has been perpetrated. In con nection with a number of names of men who verified various sheets of the pe tition. Those who. have been conduct ing the probe are convinced that there will be ample room to show that many fictitious names have been used and that In numerous Instances the peti tions are of less value than the paper on which the names are written. Detective W T Riirna end .Tnmoa T-ToSKic a city detective of Los Angeles, were Indicted- on charges of kidnaping John J. ma Namara, secretary of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Ironworkers, . from this city, and Me Namara was indicted on charges of conspiracy to dynamite, by the Marlon County grand jury today. In all the grand Jury returned eight indictments, but named only the three men. Three of the indictments are against McNamara, who is in jail in Los Angeles, where he was taken after being arrested in Indianapolis April 21. 1911. One Indictment charges him with "conspiracy to dynamite Industrial works of the Peoria & Pekin Union Railroad at Peoria. 111.." and the other two referred to the fostering of dyna mite, in this city. The other five Indictments are against Detective Burns, who is under $10,000 bond to the locar grand jury, and Detective Hosslc. of Los Angeles, who has not been arrested. The grand jury reported that It found no evidence to sustain the charges of kidnaping against Walter Drew, of. New York, counsel for the National Erectors' Association: J. A. G. INDICTMENTS UNDER FIRE Men Accused of Dynamiting in Los Angeles Raise Technicality. LOS ANGELES, June 17. An attack on the validity of the indictments will be made when Bert Conners, A. B. Maple and F. Bender, the union men accused of having attempted to dyna mite the County Hall of Records, are brought into court next Wednesday to enter their pleas. Attorneys retained to defend the McNamara brothers also represent Con ners and his alleged confederates and they believe that success In an attack upon the indictments .would have a fa vorable effect in the McNamara case. The McNamara brothers, who have to answer 13 charges of murder, will en ter their pleas July 5 next.
