"""" .,. ...-2 4- . , .... .. .... c y. Ill NEWPORT, ON YAQUINA , BAY, ATTRACTS THRONG Agate Bed, Fine Fishing and Points of Interest Nearly Are Factors in Increasing Popularity of Resort. nOSSESSINO many superior attrac tions that appeal to the vacatlon- 1st. Newport, on Taquina Bay, Is one of Oregon's most popular Summer resorts.' Because of its distance from Portland, Newport has not drawn a large proportion of the Summer vis itors from this city in the past, but thousands of people from cities of the Willamette Valley and of Southern Ore gon go there every season. Probably no other beach on the Pa cific. Coast has a larger variety of at tractions than has Newport. The town itself lies on th bay proper,' but the Summer colony Is divided between the hotels in the town and the hotels and cottages at Nye Creek, which Is about a mile away and on the ocean. At New port visitors bathe In the quiet waters of the bay, while those who prefer may disport themselves In the rougher and somewhat colder surf on Nye Creek besch. Newport offers every advantage to the 1 fisherman. The bay Is ideal for boat 1 lng. and the fishing there is good. This sport is especially worth while at cer tain times when salmon are In the bay. Seldom has the amateur fisherman bet ter cause for excitement than when he has a 30-pound salmon on the end of a trolling line. Trout fishing Is also available In the vicinity, several trout streams emptying Into the bay. These can be reached by a short trip in a small boat. The beach at Nye Creek is one of the most interesting on the Coast, although the unbroken stretch of sand ts shorter than at several other resorts. One at traction in which Newport is unrivaled is the fine bed of agates that line the shore. At low tide a fascinating occu pation is to search among these stones for the exceptional ones that are worth keeping. Moss agates, water agates and other stones of more or less value are found in large numbers each season. Several shops do little else than cut and mount these stones, and many a beau- tlful. setting for tie or ring has been ; found in this agate bed. The trips both north and south from Newport are well worth taking. Otter" Rock and the Devil's Punch Bowl ar among the best-known attractions. Fre quent excursions are also made to the lighthouse and to the station of the Llfesavlng Service. At low tide, one may walk for several miles along a beach, where, at high tide, the water pounds into scores of caves or breaks upon precipitous rocks. Newport has all the conveniences of the modern Summer resort. The hotels are well equipped and manaered. band concerts are . given dally during the busy season and there. are excellent floors for dancing. The cottage life at Newport is very pleasant, and there is also a considerable area reserved for -those who wish to camp. Newport is reached from Portland by tho Southern Pacific to Albany or Cor vallls and from either of these cities by the Corvallis & Eastern to Taquina. From Taquina boat la taken for a short and pleasant trip down the bay to New-, port. Portland people have been tak ing more interest In this resort In the last year or two, and it Is expected that the number of visitors from this city will continue t Increase. A Hint and a Whistle. J Judge. "Johnny," said the teacher, "here Is a book. Now stand up straight and sing like a little man." The song was "Nearer, To Thee." No sooner had the school commenced to sing than a little girl waved her hand frantically. Stopping the singing the teacher inquired tho cause.
