FIRETRUCKS PURCHASED TWO ACTO(VEHICXES ADDED TO DEPARTMENT APPARATUS. President Tucker, of Humane So ciety, Believes These. Sltonld Re place All Horses In TTse. "It Is most gratifying to see that th Portland Fire Department has taken steps to eliminate the use of horses," said Robert Tucker, president of the Oregon Humane Society. "It is to be hoped every horse-drawn fire apparatus will be replaced by motor flre-flghtlng apparatus 'In Portland as soon as possible. The long runs up steep grades require too heavy work for horses. Besides, a motor-driven ap paratus can cover the ground much more quickly and In frequent cases reach a fire before It gets a good head way. - "The movement to install motor driven apparatus In the fire department service Is not only in line of progress, but It is another step forward in re moving the horse from exacting hard ships on the paved streets. The time is coming when the use of horses for heavy draft work will be more the ex ception than the rule on the streets of Portland. The society believes that the movement should be encouraged in removing horses from the hard pave ments entirely, unless the animals are provided with rubber shoes. These shoes are now being manufactured and are giving practical results." Mayor Simon and Fire Chief Camp bell announced yesterday that they were pleased with the showing made by the two pieces of motor-driven ap paratus which were put to an official test Thursday. The Mayor said that Portland should not delay in equipping the fire service with these vehicles, believing that the investment will re pay the city In a short time through the ability to reach fires quickly and to put them out before much damage is done. It is expected that the vehicles will be turned over to the city and placed Into service within the next 10 days. In addition to the apparatus, the Fire Committee has awarded contracts for two auto runabouts, one a Cadillac, costing 12000. and the other an Over land, costing $1930. These will be used by batallion chiefs, replacing horse- drawn carts. a stump when the explosive went off.
