TIMBER IS TOJE TREATED
Agricultural College Aids Inexpen
sive Way.
CORVALLI3, Or, May 13. A simple
and Inexpensive timber-treating plant
has been set up by the forestry depart
ment at the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege to teach the students how farm
timbers, such aa fence posts, may be
.protected from weather, insect fung
ous and other destructive Influences at
a comparatively small cost. It can be
duplicated on any farm for f 100 or less,
and will readily pay for itself in a short
time in the added length of years that
the treated timbers will last.
One object In Installing this plant at
the college was to give the forestry
students actual experience In timber
preservation work. It haa also been
proven useful In treating the fence
posts used on the college grouuds and
farm, so that they will not need re
placing for a long time. To a certain
extent the treatment preventa the
growth of the mosses and lichens which
hold moisture and thus hasten the de
cay of the wood. The principal action
of the preservatives, however. Is to
kill any spores of fungi that come In
contact with the wood: and If there Is
no fungous growth there will be no
decay.
Each post treated by the college will
be numbered, and a careful record will
be kept of Its durability. The plan is
to set one treated post and one un
treated post near together In the row,
so that comparison can easily be made
of the two under the same kind ot soil
and moisture conditions.
The plant consists of a light frame
shed with two galvanized iron tanks,
one a heating tank and the other a
cooler. Both are fitted with steam colls,
so that the temperature of the con
. tents can be sontrolled. gasjawaea w -
'SMALL PARKS FAVORED
MEXFJ-KE ADVOCATES PLAY
GROCXDS FOR CHILDREN.
Councilman Declares He Will Fight
for Purchase of Park Tract
1m Alblna. DistrkU
I am a firm be-llever In the plan to
secure a numoer of smaller parks, play-
l grounds tor th children, and not to
spend all the park money for lartfo
tracts.' declared Councilman Menefea.
of the Ninth Ward. Friday night, when
1 the) park question was being consid
' ered by the North-Eaat Slda Improve
ment Association.
Mr. Menefee pointed out that the Al
blna district has been left out while
other sections had been supplied, and
now he was determined that Alblna
should have at least a playground. He
said that the Mayor and members ct
the Park Board bad examined two sites
In Alblna the past week, one a tract of
eight acres in Multnomah Addition
overlooking; the Willamette River, and
another smaller tract near Knott
street, and that they were very favor
ably Impressed with both tracts, but
he himself favored the tract that is
near the . school houses and that Is
easily reached from both Upper -and
Lower Alblna.
l B. Myers explained that, as chair
man of the park committee, he had
ascertained that there were no funds
left for the purchase of new or im
provement of the parka already pur
chased and that there would not be
until the next loOO.OOO in bonds author
ized had been Issued.
"The Park Board is Inclined to im
prove the parka which have been pur
chased already." said Mr. Myers, "and
not acquire more. These tracts pur
chased are not Improved, but ought to
be. The Board of Education has
adopted the -policy of purchasing; plays-rounds
near the schoolhouses for the
use of the children. Later when Port
land arrows larger and these small
playgrounds become valuable they can
be sold and more grounds purchased
further out. The schools must then be
moved Into the Interior to get out of
the range of apartment-houses and
flats. The Board of Education has al
ready acquired several playgrounds
under Its present policy."
M. O. Munly expressed the opinion
that If the Park Board bad adopted the
policy of not acquiring more park
tracts until such time aa the present
parks are all improved. It was a wrong
policy, and that all sections should be
provided.
"Advance in the land values." said
Mr. Munly. "will more than double the
cost of park tracts and settlements will
fill up the available tracts close in and
make it Impossible to get more ?ark
tracts at all. I am In favor of the city
acquiring such park tracts as it may
need, and the parks which have been
acquired may wait Improvement. They
will not depreciate in value by delay
ing their Improvement."
Salmon Catch Improving.
ASTORIA. Or.. May 1J. (Special)
Reporta from ' the lower harbor are
that better catches - of salmon were
made In that section last night than
at any previous time during the pres
ent season. This was especially true
of the fishermen using small mesh
nets. The largest salmon reported
thus far was a Chinook weighing 60
pounds, which was caught last night in
the north channel.
