TIIE SUNDAY OREGONTAX. TORTXAXD, 3IARCII 19, 1911. PUGILIST MORRIS OKLAHOMA HERO "White Man's Hope" Stirs Citizens, Who Await Anx ously Coming Fight. MIKE SCHRECK IS "NEXT1 Sew York Sportdom Still Talking of Wolcat-Brown Boat. I'nable to Deride Whk-h la Bert, Say James J. Corbrit. BT JAMES J. CORBETT. NEW TORK. March II. (Special) I am told that down Oklahoma way there la on subject of all absorbing interest these Spring days tba coming ronl.at bttwHO Mike Schreck. reteran haarjrwalght. and Carl Morris, pride of Oklahoma, and the only "white nope' to uneoT&r anything wcYtb while alnce the epidemic of youngsters with the champlonahtp fever. Morris borne Is Sapulpa, but to tell the truth the entire state lays claim to proud ownership of the youngster whos admirers prophecy he will be the man to take the title away from J. Arthur Johnson. When a stranger lights In the hustling town he Is Im mediately grabbed at the depot and forced to Join the club of Morris boos ters, whether he will or no. Th most popular form of entertainment In fapulpa la Ttaltlng the training quar ters of Its foremost citizen and the first "duty of the loyal natives Is to drag their visitors out to the camp to have speek at th "coming champion of the world." aa they like to call him. State Daffy" Orrr Morris, t The entire state apparently has gone &M.rty ovar the prospect of developing a weal live heavyweight boxer who may some day have a chance at the highest (honors of the ring. In Sapulpa they mre building an arena to seat more than 12.S0O psople. and It Is the belief of the promotera that It will scarcely be large enough to hold the big fellow's admirers on the night of March IS. when the bla dolnga are scheduled. - If old Mlk should drop one over on Morris' Jaw and put the young galnt down for the count It is feared the Oklahomana would never get over the hock and surprise Con Klley. now In charge of Morris' training, also baa under hla wing young Cincinnati light heavywslght who is looked upon as a comer. Harry Wueet Is tha boy's name, and he Is the hero of several battles, all of which he hu won by the K. O. route. Last week he trimmed a Kanaaa Clt- "hope" In two rounds, and the newspapers say acquitted htmseir like a champion. Oklahoma sports who are not given to doing things by halves are now offering to bark the Clnclnnatlan against any heavyweight In the country barring Champion Johnson, and their own par titular pride. Morris. Rller "Wise" Bird In Game. It will be observed that Ksufmsnn and Langford axe eligible under the terms of challenge, but I guesa there Is little to be feared from either of those gladiators, aa both have other con tracts on hand which promise to keep them busy for a long time. However. I am In-lined to the opinion that Con Klley would have blue penciled the challenge somewhat before giving It to the press had he the opportunity. Con la too old a bird and too foxy to send youngster out to tackle the toughest ztuts In the game without proper school Ins; and experience. New Yorkers are still talking about the recent Wolgast-Brown battle and hardly know whether to give "Knock out ' credit for being a rrackerjack or to figure Adoplh according to the Bat tling Nelson dope. Nelson, you will remember, referred to Woiaaat aa a "cheese champion." and not a few are ef the same opinion. All are asrreed that Ad wss the lucky little boy to catch Pat going Instead of coming, else there would have been no champion ship title In the Wolga.t family. Some few of the critics handle the Knjrt without gloves In their papers and one or two go so far as to say that Troth belong In the preliminary class. Bat Masterpon says Brown Is the poor est excuse for a fighter he ever clap ped eyee upon, and that Wolgast Is not much better. Masters-n argues that either Fal Moore or "Young Pammy" Fmtth would fight rlnrs around Wol gast and Brown and that It would be eruet to put them against such clever lada aa McFarland snd Moran. Crack to Fight In Gotham. Before many weeks have passed we expect to decide some few Important )ta-hiwels;ht bouts here In Ootham. and when the boys hsve finished mixing, the sports hope to be able to name the future champion of the class. Kor It Is the opinion of the "wise guys" here about tt-.sf Ad's crown will be wrested from him shortly and that the boy to do the trick will be drawn from the following bunch of huskies Packy Mc Farland. Owen Moran and Freddie "Welsh. The last named will soon be over here. Tom O'Rourke has done the work by cable and the little Welshman a 111 be seen la action within the next xnonth. McFarland already has secured Wol gast'e promise to box 10 rounds In New Tork. and the agreement reads for April 1. at Hilly Gibson's Falrmount club. The welsrht will be I3S pounds at T o'clock, which Is the lowest figure Pack.y hss made In some time, and slda of severity and too strict adher ence to the letter of the law. Langford to Meet McVey. I note that Langford haa slipped over to Paris, whsre he Is to take on 8am McVey. late of Oxnard. CaL. but of more recent years a cttlsen of Paris. McVey haa been In pretty soft In Paris for the laat year or two and the pick ing haa been easy. The only setbac he met with waa when Joe Jeannette made him quit In a finish fight, but the Frenchmen have long ago forgiven and forgotten that little Incident and once more regard him aa Invincible. Lanx ford ought to experience no great dif ficulty In disposing of the big coon. Mc Vey has been Idle for quite a time and must be rusty, while the tar baby la In the pink of condition probably better than at any time In his career. Joe Jeannette. by the way. Is not sat isfied that Langford la a better man than he Is and wants Samuel to go over the Marathon route, lie will short ly sail for France with that object In view. Joe feela that while Langford may outpoint him for IS rounds or so he will put the kibosh on the man who licked Australia's champion In a finish fight. And Kam may feel that way about It. too, for he haa put his foot down hard on the long-dlstanae propo sition, claiming that It rounds are enough for either to demonstrate su periority. The Trench sports are strong for the finish thing, however, and Sam may be persuaded to change his mind If the financial Inducements are large enough. Another American boxer came to rrtef In London the other evening. This time BUS SERVICE LIKED Hostelry Responds to Demand for Another Car. Al Llppe. manager for Harry Lewis, who Is In Europe licking everything in sight, haa tsken hla pen In hand to ac quaint the sports on this side with the fact that he has challenged Bern Lang ford to box Lewis for the middleweight championship of the world. Al writes aa If re were In earnest, and probauly haa xotlen away with en much of this sort of stuff In the old country that he expect us to fall for It also. It seems that AL who Is a mighty nice fellow personally, has been advertising his man all over Europe aa the middle weight champion, and when Langford ar rived on the scene recognised m. chance for some good adverting. Inasmuch as Samuel la a much-talked-of colored per son since winning over Lang. Of courso. no one known better than Llppe thst Langford cannot make Us pounds with out sawing off a couple or legs, but tne challenge looks good In print and Is con sidered good advertising. It Is horrible contemplate what would happen to Al's meal ticket If Bam and Harry should by any manner of mean ever get together. Tour of World by Lew Is. Llppe and Hugh Mcintosh have ar ranged to take Lewis on a tour or the world, meeting all comers at the middle weight limit. Not once during that time has there been any trouble and never has the car been In the shop. The economy of the car, too. la a potent factory In Ita popularity with the management. The bus service cost has been nearly cut In twain by the addition of the motor car. Noiseless and speedy, the car has at tracted more than casual glancea on the Portland streets.
