built on Derby street, near the bank
butldlnir. for C. W. M'yer. It will have
a pressed brick front and the remainder
will be of concrete construction. A fra

floor. Vnder the Inspiration of the Ken
ton Push Club, 13 of the principal Btreeta
of Kenton are to be paved a. oon aa
the work can be done with TVestrumlte
asphalt, which Is manufactured In a A
plant now bring erected In the Co

these streets and probably will be used.
Derby street la feet and Patton ave
nue li feet wide. These wide streets will
be narked with wide sidewalks, so that
the cost of the pavements will not fall
heavily on the property owners. The
Hoard of Education recently secured a
double block and will build a school
house this year so that the S children
at Kenton will not need to travel so far
to reach a schoolbous. Besides the new
manufacturing plants already establish
ed and in operation on Columbia slough,
other Important industries are eekinr
locations near the O.-W. R. N. line.
The -hwarschlld Sulzberger Packing
Company, of South Portland, it U an

ear the I'nlon Meat Company s plant
and may build this year.
- look for the time when Columbia
Slough will be lined to Troutdale with
manufacturing establishments." said
ft. i Woodward, president of the Kenton
Push Club. "There are few places where,
the conditions are so favorable for manu
facturing concerns. Here is water In
abundance and railroad transportation
right at the front doors of these con
cerns. All the establishment built In
this district are doing well. We con
stantly besr of other concerns seeking
locations In this district. One advan
tage of Kenton Is that from the start
only first-class buildings were erected,
and there will bo no period In the fu
ture when the bulldlnirs must be removed
to make way for modern structures. Only
this class if structures have been per
mitted or will be permitted In this dis
trict. As the manufacturing concerns
are completed and put Into operation
here, more people are employed and
more business Is done In Kenton. Tha
bank which was started less than two
years aeo has done good buslnesa from
the start. We need a echoolhouse and
pavements for our streets, and "
are In a fair way to get. The Board of
Kdueation will buUd a echoolhouse here
this year, and our Club la- pushing a
wholesale paving movement that will
gle us hard-surface streets."

RAILROAD HELPS LAND
COUNTRY OV NORTH BANK OF
COLUMBIA IS PEVELOPED.
Klickitat County Will Spend Large
Part of Tax Money la Terri
tory Benefited.
Tha north bank of the Columbia
RlTer. east of the Cascade Mountains,
so long left In an undeveloped con
dition because lacking railroad trans
portation. Is at last coming; Into It
own since the North Bank Railroad
has given direct connection with Port
land markets.
The Klickitat County authorities
recognizing these changed conditions,
have made an appropriation for road
and bridge building In the Sundale dis
trict A force of men la completing
a permanent bridge across Chapman
Creek, and building a permanent county
road on a water-grade along Chapman
Creek, leading back about five miles
Into the Interior and through the midst
of a rapidly developing orchard dis
trict Trior to this year. Klickitat
County ofdclala have given but U"le
attention to development of the south
ern part of the county, and most of the
tax moneys have been spent In the
Uoldendale district Since the rail
road came, and In view of the early
completion of the Celllo Canal, south
ern Klickitat County bids fair to be
the most thickly populated section.
This county Is remarkable for Its 100
miles of frontage along the Columbia
River. No other county In Washington
or Oregon has so much river frontage,
and no other county bas such large
milage of a trunk-line railroad. The
larger part of the railroad taxes paid
by the Spokane, Portland & Seattle
Railway, in the state of Washington,
goes Into the coffers of Klickitat
County.
"As these railroad taxes come from
the river townships, the men of south
ern Kllckltst County will henceforth
expect that a large part of thia money
shall be spent for the Improvement of
the southern portion of the county,"
said C. I. Hyskell. of the Hunter Land
Company, which Is developing a 3000
acre tract of orchard and' vineyard
lands.
Sales have been made to 12 Portland
and Salem men In the last few months,
and a number of houses are being built
In addition, a grocery store and a
achoolhouse are to be Immediately
commenced. Superintendent Shepard
and a force of men are planting the last
of the acreage for the Winter season,
and there are now about 3&0 acres of
fruit and almond orchards and vine
yards. All the vineyards are planted
to European varieties of grapes. The
future of the North Bank Railroad
region looks very bright and we are
glad to say that all of this territory
Is directly tributary to Portland. This
city will enjoy virtually all the business
that Is developed In future years from
southern Klickitat County."

Madras was a substantial town long before the
advent of rail transportation what will it be now
thattwo transcontinental railroads traverse its limits?
The traffic manager of the Harriman lines in the North
west, in a recent speech, said: "Madras will be the North Yak-
ima of Oregon." '
Now is the opportunity of a lifetime. The history of North
Yakima, Wenatchee, Twin Falls and Spokane will be repeated
at Madras. .
