causing him trouble. Itrcu of their
quarrelsomeness toward Webb. Fore
man A. M. Fair discharged all tha

Fair and also Webb, against whom they
wera particularly bitter becausa ho
waa tha first American to displace
them.
It Is said by local railroad men that
Jeorga Laplas and his brother Lem
haa been nen lying In wait for Webb
near his home at different times.
About a week ago tha Laplas brothers
and other Greks secured work at a
Corrallla aV Eastern rock quarry near
Niagara. JJ miles east of Albany.
IV ebb waa sent up there today with
a worktraln to load rock. All forenoon
iracrg Laplaa muttered at Webb, call
ing him names In Greek- After lunch
this noon ha came down to tha caboose
as Webb stepped from It. a quarrel
nsred and. as tha Greek rushed to
ward Webb, the latter drew an auto
matic revolver and began to shoot,
laplas fell at the second shot. Lam
1-splss then rushed toward Webb, who
fired three times at him without affect.

Webb talked freely of tha shooting
when he reached hero tonight, saying

carry out threats to kill him and shot
to save himself. Laplaa la a power
fully built man and Webb of medium
build. No weapons were found on tha
Greek when he fell. Though tha ca
boose was full of workmen Just fin

Bramhall Logging Company, of Port
land, and C A. liollenbeck aud asso
ciates of Manhattan. Kta, are Inter
ested. The consideration waa 1130.000.
Tha land will be lotted by the B.-am-faall
concern and the ogs will be mar
keted In Portland. Operations will bs
begun as soon as tha railroad la com
pleted, which mill be early In the
fcprlng.
Tha tract is situated In township
north, range west, and the railroad
runs directly through iL The lumber
la all yellow fir of tha finest quality,
and the logs will produce an unusual
ly large percentage of clear lumber.
The deal was negotiated by Mr.
Bramhall. who haa been working on It
all Winter.
Tha Bramhall Logging Company op
erates a large camp west of Boring. In
Clackamas County. The camp haa been

are being made to resume operations
