Llewellyn George, 47 Davenport street, this city, haa made a general forecast of the events of the year un as follows: The new moon for January occurs December tl. and the planetary posi tions and aspects for that moment fur nish not only an Indication for the month but also for the year 1911. be cause of its belns; the first lunation after Winter solstice. The 35th dogree of Pisces ascends with Aries Intercepted in the first house and Saturn posited therein. This Is an unfavorable augury for the wom- ing classes, causing dissatisfaction, un rest and public ill health, but the in fluence will not be very pronounced because Saturn Is In his "fall" and Is retrograde. The luminaries are in good aspect to both Mars and Jupiter from the mid heaven denoting rising prestige for the President, great constructive and fi nancial activity for the country. Great progress is denoted, in this chart, for all means of'travel and com munication. Development In construe five science and religious freedom are prominent testimonies. Much progres sire and liberal legislation will be en acted. During the year Saturn will come Into good aspect with both Uranus and Neptune, and for awhile the beneficent Jupiter will also be In favorable aspect to those two planets; the effect of these aspects results In remarkable progress scientifically and commer daily making the year noted for gl gantic undertakings and Inventive de velopmenta. These aspects also pre vent any possibility of war for thli country during the year. BUSY WOrVIEN FARMERS Samples of the Types Wbo Have Succeeded. Success Magaslne. Women are quickly learning that the country offers better opportunities for wholesome and sane living than does the congested city, and as a consequence a number of our Eastern abandoned farms are being reclaimed by women who are anxious to escape the strain of profes sional or clerical life. In an address to the students of Wellesley College, Laura D. Gills, of the Intercollegiate Alumnae Association, said: "Girls, take up farm ing," and judging from the popular re sponse to the "back-to-the-farm" cry, it would not be surprising If more than one Wellesley graduate followed Dr. Gill's advice. Mrs. Charlotte B. Ware, of Norfolk, Mass., was a school teacher and always had dreams of "a life in the open." As a wedding present she received a Jer sey calf and that was the beginning of the now famous Warelanrls dairy. Mrs. Ware has gons a stop further, however. Last Summer she opened a school where students from Harvard, Wellesley, Clark, Cornell and the Carnegie Technical Schools attended for the purpose of studying the milk question and Its rela tion to infant mortality. This unique Bummer school is the only one ot its kind In the country. There Is a Mrs. Strong In Whittler, Cal., who commenced with a few walnut trees and who now Is about the largest walnut grower In the country. A great portion of our olive supply comes from Sacramento Valley, and the head of a large ranch there Is Mrs. Freda Shmann. wife of an Eastern physician, who, finding herself depen dent on her. own resoruces, went In for olive growing. Some women have found It profitable to specialise in cabbages: others In onions, and there ara still others who wouldn't think life worth while without their chickens and ducks. Miss Frances Duncan, writing on the subject, says there is a good chance for a woman horticulturist to go into part nership with a landscape gardener one for artistic results and the other to study materials. VICTORIA, B. C. Dec SI. (Special.) With the opening- of the Panama Canal the Blue Funnel line will operate vesaelB between this port and England via the canal, making calls at various ports on east and west coasts of the United States. At present the only Blue Funnel vessels touching at this port come from England via the Suez Canal. The new route through the Panama Canal is shorter than the one now utilized by more than SuD miles and there is plenty of business to warrant a regular steamship service. If the Holt Company begins this new service it will not mean they will with draw the present line coiling Into this port. Victoria will be the central point and with these two routes going, the Blue Funnel line will then circle the world. The Kosmos Company is operating a line of tramps, which make the trip to this city from Germany, via the Straits of Magellan, calling at Brazilian. Chilean and other ports on the east and west coasts of South America, as well as west coast points of North America. Imme diately the canal is ready for traffic un doubtedly the Blue Funnel and the Kos mos companies will enter Into strenuous competition for the trade on the new route. The latter line, while still main taining Its present schedule, will not let the trade via the Panama Canal go with out a bid for it. Travis Beats Hunter at Golf. PIN'EHURST, N. C Dec. 31. SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 31. (Spe cial.) Bank clearings for the year ending today are the largest in the history of the city, according to the figures of Charles Sleeper, manager of the San Francisco Clearing House. The total for 1910, is approximately $2,323,693,556, as against 1 1.975.872,570 for 1909. an Increase of $343,820,980. This has been, therefore, the largest year ever experienced by banking in stitutions of the Pacific Coast metropo lis. One of the reasons for the enor mous increased total of clearings, has been admission of the United States While this has probably swelled the total over $1,000,000,000, still, deduct ing this amount, the increase is the biggest In the history of local hanking.
