Law son tesUfied today that be had not spoken to F. Augustus Helnse for eight years and wanted no business re lations with him. Counsel tried to ob tain from Mr. Lawsoa his Idea of the reputation of Mr. Helnse for truth and veracity, but there was objection. Lawsoa attempted to shed some light ea the rise and fall of Ohio coppsr in May, 10. as bearing on the allega tions of F. Augustus Hdnze In his suit to recover collateral pledged with A. D. T. Adams, of this city, which he as serts was sold without his consent. The esse is being heard by F. Rockwood Hill, a master appointed by the Circuit Court. Keene regarding the management of a mar ket campaign In Ohio copper whlca would enhance the value of the stock from IS to $S a share. He was assured by Warfleld that the greater part of the stock was closely held and that little would come out during the rise. When the rtock reached IS a share ho wji led to be lieve on Investigation, that Ohio cop per stock, which he had been assured by Warfleld and Keene would t.ot be offered, was nevertheless being thrown on the market In large blocks. Accepting the offer of the Washington High School for a football game In Port land on December 31 and declaring that his team Is a bona fide amateur high school eleven, a message has been re ceived from K. M. Patterson, manager of the Oak Park High School team, of Chi cago. In his message of acceptance he vouches for every member of the team as a gentleman. The other high school teams of the city are glad to see the Washington High School get a game with the crack East ern aggregation and many players have stated their willingness to practice against them, that they may be In fine fettle to meet the Chicagoans. John Beckett, left guard, has been elected captain of the team for 191.. He Is a popular player and one of the best guards In the league. Beckett is a good punter, fast, aggressive and, above all. a clean player. To win from Chicago would be a big feather in Washington's cap and also a big advertising boost for Portland.. More over, It would place the Western football In a favorable position bofore the East ern critics The Oak Park High School team has been guaranteed a large sura for the game and it will be necessary for a large turnout to make ends meet. However, with no other attraction on for that day, a monster football crowd probably will see the game. Tickets will be on sale probably a week in advance of the game. HOME RULE THOUGHT WON (Continued from First Pass.) new flag of truce and are suggesting a new conference, but the Liberal opinion will not permit another conference and the doom of the veto power of the Lords is clearly pronounced. The only outstanding question Is the date of the execution of the Liberal pro gramme. The fight will continue to be tierce, for both rides are aroueed to feverish heat, as the tremendous strug gle over the country end the narrow ma jorities in so many of the elections prove, but the end of the fight, barring some dksastrous Occident, now is visible. The old House of Lords was said by Rosebery to be dead, but it now is dead in a much more real sense than Rosebery thought. The Irishmen are especially delighted over tali triumphant ending of their campaign. They are so delighted that they laugh even over O'Brien's victory In Cork City. This victory was due to 1S00 Tory votes and the transfer of a thousand votes controlled by a con tractor named Fltxgerald. whom O'Brien often has denounced, but whom he ap parently captured for this election at the last moment. The defeat of Timothy Healy in Louth and O'Donnell's defeat in Mayo nullify O'Brien's hold on a small cor ner of Ireland and. anyhow, with the Liberal victory and the coming fierce battle with the House of Lords. O'Brien is a negligible quantity. That fight submerges all other issues and nothing now visible on the politi cal horizon can stand between Red mond and the prompt advent of heme rule. Doctor Says Teachings and Writings Are Misunderstood and His Use of Term "Affinity" Has High and Lofty Meaning. SANTA ROSA. CaL. Deo. 10.--(Spe-claL) To corroborate a theory that Lou Etta Smith conceived the idea that Dr. Wlllard P. Burke was the father of her child after reading and studying works on mental telepathy, the defense In the u-lal ot the sanitarium pro prietor .U contend, when the cross examination of the woman is resumed, that she also conceived the idea that a member of the faculty of the Unlver-. slty of California was her spiritual ainnlty. An attempt will be mode to show that ie woman loved madly one of the men of the university whose lectures she attended. Attorneys Leppo and Cowan will try to show by Lou Etta's own statements that she believed that the professor appeared to her spirit at least, and made his vows of love to her. Working along the same line of rea soning the defense will try to prove that Lou Etta, while imbued with the Btrange Ideas and theories advocated by Wilson Fritsch, the new thought lecturer now In Australia, believed Dr. Burke, the man whom she declares she would even now love if proved inno cent of the charge against him, was the spiritual father of her child.' The attempt to show the woman of a pe culiar temperament, and with insanity in her family. Is merely a side issue, brought up to show her susceptible to the weird teachings of men of strange faiths. That the ideas expressed by Lou Etta Smith by 1 r. Burke, and whicn sne se cured from his literary efforts, were the result of misinterpretation of the works, will be another point raised by the defense. Real Meaning to Be Shown. un. t Vi r.il meanlnsr of the communication on the evolution of the family, prepared by Dr. Burke and sub mitted to Lou Etta Smith, which was Introduced in evidence Friday, an epit ome of the teachings of Dr. Burke has been prepared by one of his fol lowers and submitted to the attorneys for the defense. "The witnesses for the state have stood up well under cross-examination. Lu Etta Smith is proving a far better witness for the state than was expected, and her story has not been shaken." "Dr. Purke will be proved innocent beyond the question of a doubt," said Attorney Leppo, counsel for the defense. "His teachings and writing have been misunderstoou; his ideas distorted. In his communication to Lu Etta Smith the word affinity Is mistaken. It is not used in the ordinary divorce court meaning, but with a higher, loftier meaning. To the pure-minded there can be nothing wrdng Inferred from his communication. His is a charitable, kind and loving nature. His letters to Lu Etta Smith can be explanled to the satisfaction of everyone." Business Men Take to Stage. SPRINGFIELD. Or.. Dec. 10. (Special.)
