days, it Ls safe to say. more inquiries
concerning; cars were received by local
dealers and more demonstrations were
marie than during any period of the same
lensrth in the history of Portland. Dealers
were (rencmily surprised at . the large
number of Inquiries made and for this
reason are expecting the Spring season to
be remarkably active.
Demonstration cars, filled with pros
pective purchasers, whizzed through Port
land streets during those two days ,as
never before. Many sales were rec'orded
and hundreds more were started on the
road to nnal consummation.
H. A. Burgess, of the Crow Automobile
Company, is in Southern Oregon visiting
fub-agcnts.
FYed A. "Bennett, a well-known Xorth
west necnt with headquarters in Port
land, is now in the liast visiting the
factories.
"William Jenkins, who was sent to Port
land by the Thomas Company, of BufTalo,
makers of the Thomas Flyer, to attend
the automobile show, has gone to San
Francisco.
J. S. M. Kiev, formerly with the Thomas
factory and later with a Seattle auto
mobile firm, has come to Portland and
will hereafter be a salesman with the
Orowe Automobile Company:
Three carloads of automobiles, consist
ing of Marions. Oldsmobiles and Over
lands, were delivered to the Crowe Auto
' mobile Company this'week. .
An effort is being made by some of the

practice of publishing a list of individual

Motorcycles are being sol.l in greater
numbers than ever before in the history
of the industry on the Pacltlc Coaft,

west agents for ihe Indian Motorcycle.
Three carloads of Mitchells will leave
the factory February 15 for the Barnes
Auto Company. These cars are. to be
delivered to purchasers of the past fow
days.
The greatest single consignment of
motor-cars ever shipped to the Pacific
Coast was received last week by the
Mitchell asenry in San Francisco. There
wore 1.13 cars in the shipment.
J. J. Rieg is the latest purchaser of
a Hupmolii'.e from Fcrrtst Smithson,
local affent.
The C M. Menzies Motor-Car Company
Is now housed in its new offices, at Sev
enth and Davis streets. The old offices

The H. I.. Keats Auto Company has
delivered 19 Chalmers automobiles since

ers are now en route from the factory.

The Keats Auto Company expects three
of its new Granmi-Logan trucks this
week. Many orders for these trucks have
been takn.
Dr. K. H. Kand and A. C. Ruby are
tha latest purchasers of Columbus elcc-
tries from the Lloyd Auto Company. The
former has a coupe and the latter a
victoria.
"B-M-Fa" were cold by the Studebaker
Company last week as follows: T. G.
Condon, r. A. Howe and A. B. Mc
Kennls. An electric th&t ia attracting a great
deal of attention is that received last
week by the Studebaker Company. It is
known as the 17-K. model and is now on
display in the salesrooms.
Unless there is a reconsideration, the
Portland automobile road races will not
be held during the Rose Festival. The
dealers passed a resolution last Monday
night which forbids any member entering.
The Xorthwest agency for the Parry
car, of Indianapolis, was closed last week
by Henry Funk. The Parry car is a
1910 product and expects to make a sensa
tion among cheap automobiles.
Roy Wilson, manager of the "Western
Auto Company, is in Kastern Oregon this
week visiting subagencies for the Moline
and Knox.

dealer in local races.

VANCOUVER, Wash., Feb. 1Z (Spe
cial.) In one of the fastest basket
ball games played In Vancouver this
season, the five from Ashland defeated
the Tillicums by the score of 27 to 14.
Two preliminary games were played,
in which the Vancouver High School
girls defeated the girls of the Felida
Athletic Club, 13 to 5, and the High School
second team defeated the Felida Club,
22 to 9.

the law are not likely to cause a post
ponement of the big fight.
Johnson Is now under indictment on
a charge of assault In the second de
gree, the allegation being that he broke
a chair over the countenance of a small
negro named Pinder. If convicted he
can be sent to state's prison for not
more than five years. - ' ' '
Although' the general feeling in New
York is that Johnson should be escorted
from the arena to the rockplle, our
sports do not want anything to in
terfere with the set-to with Jeffries.
Under ordinary circumstances, John
son's case would not have been reached
until September. District Attorney
Whitman, however, has honored the
prizefighter by transferring his case to
the criminal branch' of the Supreme
Court. This means that the trial will
take place within a few weeks.
Case Will Be Pressed.
From inquiries made at the Criminal
Courts building, it was learned that the
District Attorney is determined to press
the case. It can be said unofficially,
however, that he will not over exert
himself to save Johnson from having
his "block knocked off" by Jeffries.
According to the court procedure, any
person convicted of crime (except it
be murder) can be released on bail,
pending appeal, if a justice of the Su
preme Court will sign a certificate of
reasonable doubt. Persons convicted can

Appeals. The final decision is seldom
reached In less than eight months.
So there is plenty of time for John
son to be tried and convicted, train
and battle for the championship, be
fore the "last call for stripes" is heard
from the highest tribunal of the state.

In case of conviction ball would be
fixed at around $10,000, and it would
be up to Rickard and Gleason to fur
nish it. if they want their black star
to perform on July 4.
Of course, as soon as the battle ia
over, they could surrender their man,
although it would probably mean an
other fight, and one without articles or
prize money.

AIRSHIPS ON EXHIBITION
PURE FOOD SHOW TO
MACHINES.

Numerous Interesting Features Are
Scheduled for Display During
Next Two Weeks.
Starting tomorrow and continuing
for a period of two weeks, Portland
will be given an opportunity for a
rare educational exhibit of airships and
airship models. This exhibit, to be
shown free of charge, will be given in
connection with the Pure Food Show
on the fourth floor of the. Meier &
Frank store.
There will be numerous interesting
features to the big aviation exhibit,
not the least of which will be a large
Farman biplane, which will be brought
here by M. Lawrence Dare, the French
aviator, and demonstrated by him.
This Farman biplane i3 an exact rep
lica of the machine with which Far
man once established a world's rec
ord for height at the Rheims, France,
exhibit, with a mark of 765 feet, and
which later attained a height of over
3000 feet. The car measures 30 feet
from tip to tip and may probably be
used for an actual flight by Monsieur
Dare, should the weather permit.
The real airship will be exhibited In
conjunction with seven other models
of airships, which will be demonstrated
hourly by Monsieur Dare and two as
sistants, who will accompany him here.
These consist of a Bleriot machine of
the cross-channel type, an Antoinette
monoplane, a Santos Dumont mono
plane, a Langley monoplane, a Sommer
double monoplane, a Wright biplane
and a Chanute glider.
The exhibit will be continued for
a period of two weeks and will be
open to the public at all times. It
will be held in the room which has
been set aside for showing the Curti
biplane recently purchased by Henry
Wemme.
Toy balloons, far above the usual
size, will be released every few min
utes from the top of the Meier A
Frank building all week. These bal
loons will carry an "aerogram," bear
ing a message to the finder, which will
be redeemable at one of the booths
in the Pure Food Show. The balloons
will be large, four-foot spheres, which
will be released every few minutes
during the remaining two weeks of
the ehow. This will be done as an
added attraction . to the Pure Food
Show.
The exhibitors at the Pure Food
Show all declare that this. . the . fifth
annual exhibit. . has been by far the
most successful of the several shows
held in Portland. As In the opening
weeks, every booth continues giving
away some . sample of the material
which has been on display and for the
last three days, which have been chil
dren's days, the attendance at the
booths where sweetmeats afid cookies
have been handed out. has been no
ticeably increased.
