Council of Creswell has granted R. H.
Parsons, of that place, a 25-year fran
chise to furnish the city and Its people
with water. A steam pumping plant
will soon be Installed, and water will be
taken from deep wells.

Seen Halley's Comet Twice

veteran and one of the early settlers
In this vicinity, will have seen Halley's
comet twice. Few men can boast the
honor of having witnessed for the sec
ond time the coming of this strange
visitor, whose entrance is made but
once in three-quarters of a eentury.
Mr. Goldson was 3 years old when
the comet made its previous appear
ance in 1836. His parents a short time
before had taken up' land in the Choc
taw and Chickasaw Indian tracts, then
thrown open for white settlement by
Congress, near where Winona and Gra
nada, Miss now stand. Popular knowl
edge of astronomy was limited In those
days, when books were scarce and the
coming of a newspaper the event of
months, and the Indians and many of
the simple frontier folk regarded the
weird visitor in the sky with supersti
tious fright.
"I was too young to understand much
about it then," said Mr. Goldson, "but
I can remember something of the ex
citement the comet caused, and how
my father took me by the hand and
pointed It out to me, trying to explain
it In words a child could understand.
I can also remember the picture the
comet made with its great flaming tail,
spread out like a burning fan in the
heavens, and giving light equal almost
to that of the moon. The Indians de
clared that the comet was a bad omen
and sign of poor crops and famine.
"I also saw the comets of 184S and
1S5S, the last of which was the largest
and most Impressive of them all. Both
caused much superstition and fear
among the people. It was said that
they would be followed by war and,
curiously enough, the Mexican War
came two years after the comet of '43
and the Civil War In '61. There were
also many predictions in each case that
the comet would crash Into the earth
and cause the end of the world. Defi
nite dates were even set for the big
smashup, and many persons went in
sane from fright as a result. In 1858
I remember seeing six men 'who had
gone crazy from brooding over this
prophesied end of the world being tak
en to asylums.
"They said that the comets caused
rartny and unsettled weather and" in
fluenced atmospheric conditions. I can
not say whether this was really the
cause, but In both '43 and "58 there
was much rain and severe weather, and
these same conditions prevailed for two
or three years before and after the
visits of both comets. In "43 the rains
were so severe in the South that I re
member In a walk of several miles to
school I had to swim every day a swol
len creek between the place where I
was boarding and the schoolhouse, and
this lasted all through the Winter, too.
"The coming appearance of Halley's
comet in May will mark the first time
on historical record that the earth has
ever passed through a comet's tail. At
the same time the earth will be under
planetary Influences and attractions
different from any known to have ex
isted before. Just what the result will
be even the most learned astronomers
cannot say exactly. It Is Just as well
for the astronomers not to tell all they
know of the possible-phenomena, be
cause. Just as in 1843 and 1858, there
are many persons who would lose their
minds brooding over predictions that
the world Is coming to an end."
Mr. Goldson was 78 years old last
Wednesday. He Is in excellent health,
and lully expects to witness the comet's
second coming. Mr. Goldson fought
through the Civil War In the Third
Mississippi Regiment. With his wife

ago he started a sawmill at Goldson,
25 miles from Eugene, where he lived
until a year ago, when he moved to
Eugene. His mill furnished much of
the lumber from which the earlier
homes and business houses In Eugene
were built.
Smallpox Patients Complain.
WALLA WALLA, Wash.. Feb. 12.
Suit for $1000 against Walla Walla
County is contemplated by Mr. and
Mrs. Elza Baker for alleged mistreat
ment at the pesthouse during their Ill
ness with smallpox. The two were
compelled to sleep in a cold room, and
both suffered from severe attacks of
cold, prolonging the time they had to
stay at the place, they say. According
to Mrs. Baker, who is now out of quar
antine. Mr. Baker will take the neces
sary steps as soon as he is released.
Cases of smallpox In the county are
now very few.
